  1. During the training group, you may or may not get the duty post you requested, but it's only a week, so nothing to worry about there When we place you on a ship, we take into account how often you wish to sim, the duty post you requested, and what duty posts are available on a ship that fits your simming style. About 95%+ of the time, you are posted into your first or second duty post request.
  2. Unfortunately, the last thread under this name was lost due to an error on my part. After a spammer posted two virus links in separate threads, I meant to delete ONE post from the thread under this name, and delete the "other" entire thread he created. I did it in reverse, though :-\ Anyway, let's start a new thread! Just tell us why you applied to join our community over any other group on the net
  3. Here's the answers to some Frequently Asked Questions (including the ones that are already listed on our "group intro" page): Training Information Q. How long is training? A. 6-10 days, depending on how often the group sims. Q. How will I know when training has begun? A. First, you'll receive an automated e-mail from the Google Groups system notifying you that you've been added to one of our Academy lists. Then you'll receive an e-mail entitled "Roll Call!" Q. Who do I send my "bio" to? A. Your bio will be reviewed by the Commanding Officer of your training group. During the training group, he or she will send out a tutorial which explains the specific format we use for bios, and ask you to send in yours to the group. It will be reviewed, and then sent to your permanent Commanding Officer once you graduate from training. Q. In Trek, sometimes exemplary cadets start out as LtJG officers once they reach their ship. Does that happen here? A. Everyone begins as an ensign when they transfer to a vessel. Q. What's the history of the USS Centris-A, the training vessel? A. Her fleet page tells the brief history. Q. Can I change the e-mail address I used to submit my application? A. Sure can. Just send an e-mail to t.wolf@starbase118.net from the e-mail address you submitted your application from. In this e-mail, ask him to change your address, and be sure to copy in the new address you want to change to. General Questions Q. What is simming? A. Simming is short for “simulation,” and basically just means Role Playing. Our group is a Play-By-Email Role Playing Group (PBEM RPG), which means that people’s contributions to our game are done through e-mail. We use Google Groups, an easy and popular service, as our e-mail servers. Q. How much do I have to pay for this? A. Nothing. Our group is entirely volunteer run, and playing within our group costs nothing. Q. Do I have to sign on at a specific time? A. No. You can sign on any time of the day to get your e-mails and respond. Q. How often do I have to sim? A. We usually suggest at least three times a week, though you’ll want to check your e-mail as often as possible. (During training, we’ll ask you how often you plan to play, and you’ll have the chance to decide whether you would like a faster or slower playing ship.) Q. Can I join more than one ship? A. It is permissible to sim more than one character, as long as you are of the rank of Lieutenant. Our group's focus is on quality of simming. As such, we don't want any simmer to overstretch themselves and have their simming drop on their primary vessel. In our experience sometimes people under estimate the workload of taking on a second character. However, as mentioned, once you reach the rank of Lieutenant, you may play up to three characters regularly. If you decide you don’t like the character you started with, you’re more than welcome to create a new character and remove your old character at any time. Q. Where can I find out more about the ships in your fleet? A. An "active fleet" page is maintained. From there you can find stats on each ship, and links to their websites, crewlists, and sim archives. Be sure to introduce yourself in our " Welcome Thread," and then introduce your character in the "Arrival at StarBase 118" thread. If you have any further questions, use the "Questions about our group" thread!
  4. No, we don't have a dedicated gallery. We're an RPG group, not a graphic design guild Where applicable, you can post relevant graphics on appropriate wiki pages, or on the forums. Otherwise, the best place to show off your work is a place like Scifi-meshes.com.
  5. Community and stability is what we have to offer that other groups don't. We've been around for 12+ years under the same leadership. Every captain in this group can trace his "lineage" back to me as the first CO in this group And community in terms of the many fleetwide events and media we have. One main website, the wiki, the forums, etc. Our prospective members area is a good place to learn more! Plus, we have seven ships and a starbase to choose from. Plenty of diversity so you won't get bored here
  6. Want a question answered about our community before you apply? Ask it here!
  7. The hard-and-fast rule is that you can create NPCs as necessary, so long as they are below your rank. Talk to your captain, once assigned, for more direction if necessary, as they can best tell you what is appropriate or not on their vessel
  8. See: http://www.starbase118.net/members/forms/newchar/
  9. If you don't get a response, e-mail FltCapt. Anassasi at "captain@independence.starbase118.net" to make sure she got the 2nd char form.
  10. No, once you're a lieutenant we believe you can take responisbility for your characters So, you'll be able to have a total of 3 characters once you become a Lt. 1 primary and 2 secondaries.
  11. Welcome to our forums! Thank you so much for choosing to be a part of our community. We appreciate that out of the thousands of groups on the web, you came here. The forum staff would like to invite you to join in on all of the latest discussions regarding our group, Star Trek, and other real-life issues. To maintain a high level of quality and sophistication on our forums, we have some rules and guidelines that all members must abide by. Please take a few minutes to review the information below. Where to Post and What to Post Please try and keep on topic. We've divided the board into many different categories so as to allow discussions to be held in their appropriate areas. People who go to a forum for a specific guild DON'T want to read three pages worth of banter about what someone simmed yesterday! (Want to participate in silly, free-form chat? Head to the chat room!) "General Discussion" is where the "anything else" stuff goes. This is "off topic" conversation or things that don't seem to have a place elsewhere. When in Rome...: Please read through a few threads in each ship forum before posting. Some ships are more serious about staying on topic than others. Follow the lead of the forum mods and the ship's captain, if applicable. Money, Politics, and Religion are mostly taboo around here. We tried that for a while and it just made for a lot of bad blood, which was no fun at all. Off-Color Language Please don't use profanity. Our forum has an automatic profanity filter which will "mask" your word for you, and we don't like seeing it! Also, please don't try and defeat the swear-word censor by inserting spaces or extra characters into your words. You'll earn yourself a stern warning, and repeated infractions may get you banned. Entirely masking a word, using _____, is acceptable. Language should be kept at or below a PG level. The people who rate movies officially say that PG includes the following: "Explicit sex scenes and scenes of drug use are absent; nudity, if present, is seen only briefly, horror and violence do not exceed moderate levels." We promote an environment which is acceptable for everyone. Please use discretion at all times. Content Advertising other RPGs is not allowed on our forums. You are more than welcome to post links to useful Star Trek sites, but none which are engaged in PBEM, PBF, or Live simming. Why? It's generally considered rude to "poach" members. Posting of any material which someone else has written or created without posting a citation is inappropriate and illegal. If you wish to post someone else's work, you must clearly include the author's name and a link back to the source. Do not post links to sites which promote or contain any of the following: bigoted language or situations; sexually oriented stories, photographs, or graphics; content deemed violent, horrific, or inappropriate by the vast majority of viewers; or any other sites which a child of 13 or younger should not view. Respect your fellow posters. Discrimination in any sense is unacceptable here. Remember the Golden Rule. Signatures, Avatars, Taglines The privilege of being able to define your personality on the boards through your signature, avatar, or tagline is one that CAN be taken away if it is abused. You should never post any inappropriate pictures or links in your avatars or signatures. Please do not make signatures that "stack" images, making them very "long" or "tall". Instead, put multiple images on one line. We will edit your signature if it is too large. Foreign languages contained within signatures must adhere to the normal board rules. No inappropriate language is allowed. Signatures should not be an eyesore, inflammatory, or anger-inducing. Global moderators may, at their discretion, request any member to change their signature at any time. Other Guidelines Respect moderators and board administrators. They work tirelessly to ensure that the contents of this board are clean and entertaining. While it is certainly humorous to play in jest with your friendly moderators from time to time, please keep it to a minimum. Those in power can only stand a roast for so long before they start banning people. All moderator decisions are final and unarguable. Actions which are considered illegal in the United States are not allowed. This includes references to said illegal behavior. Such activity will result in immediate banning and the notification of the proper authorities. Impersonation via stealing the identity of or acting as another individual will result in an immediate banning of your user account. Multiple accounts are not allowed. Posting material which is considered private is not allowed. This could include, but is not limited to instant message conversations, private images, content posted in a private/invisible forum, e-mails intended for a limited audience, or messages received via the forum's native Private Messenger (PM) system. All users must be of age 13 or above to register for the forums. We do not accept the consent of a parent or guardian for participation of anyone under this age. All users must meet this age requirement or they will be banned immediately. No exceptions. Do not post on behalf of someone who has been banned from the forums or removed from the group. It is not anyone else's responsibility to "get a message across," nor do we permit such activity. Any member found to be posting messages for a banned member will be subject to the same disciplinary measures as the person they are representing. The fact that someone has been banned from these forums means they no longer have a voice here. Try as we might, the moderating staff can't be everywhere all the time. As such, you can help to keep the boards clean by reporting those posts which you find offensive. The process is very quick and simple. To report a post, simply click on the "Report" link at the bottom of each post. (You may have to hover your mouse over the post to get it to appear.) Keep in mind that the same standards of behavior are expected here, as on a ship. In loose terms, the equivocal Commanding Officer of this area is FltAdml. Wolf. The Command Staff are the Moderators. Penalties & Discipline We don't do this often, but please be aware that we will take any of the following action against someone who makes themselves a nuisance on the forums: For most routine problems, you will be warned using the software's native warning system. Each incident will be recorded and your warning level will go up. Temporary ban. Notification of insubordination to the Executive Council. Permanent ban. These rules are subject to change on administrative authority. If you have any questions about these rules, Private Message a Moderator/Admin or post it in the Board Administration Forum.
