  6. Welcome to Top Sims Contest of 2012! All announcements for the entire 2012 contest will be posted in this thread. The Top Sims contest allows members of our fleet to be recognized by their peers for superior writing ability. Unlike the Writing Challenges, this contest allows only sims that have been used in a current plot to be considered. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES You can submit ANY sim -- from your ship, or another ship. You can submit your own sims if you wish. All sims are welcome, including staff (Captain, First Officer, etc.) sims. The sim must be written with good spelling, good grammar, and be in the correct format. Poorly structured sims will be ineligible. When a sim is submitted, it must have been created within the current submission period, or the previously lapsed submission period. Put another way: do not sims which are any older than a month. Submitted sims may not have any open dialogue tags. (i.e.: [respond here]) All dialogue in the sim must be filled in. (Just find the responding author's sim and fill in the blanks.) Sims must not include any "canon" characters. (i.e.- no characters who have appeared onscreen.) Please find a balance between nominating too many, or too few sims. Don't submit every good sim -- instead, post every great sim! Also encourage your fellow crew-mates to submit at least a few sims a year. If you want your crew-mates to win more, you have to nominate the best sims, and encourage others to write higher quality sims! HOW TO SUBMIT A SIM Click the "Start New Topic" button. The format of the topic title should be as follows: For example: NOTES: Use the "Prefix" drop-down to select the round you're submitting for. Please do not clutter the topic title with an endless list of NPC or PNPC names or "JP" designations. Instead, simply include the primary character's rank and name. If it's a joint post, just include both rank and names -- no need to include the "JP" in there. COMMENTING Everyone is welcome to comment on submitted sims. If you're going to provide constructive criticism, you are required to employ the "Hamburger" criticism method: first, mention something you like; second, something you didn't like; third, something else you liked. If you just want to provide praise, no hamburger method required! Commenters who are rude, unfair, or overzealous in their commenting will be barred from future comments in the contest forum, and will have their actions brought to the attention of their CO. ABOUT THE VOTING After each round, we'll set up a vote on which of those sims deserves to go to the semi-finals. There are 3 semi-finals rounds. Semi-finals are judged by a group of staff. The top sim from each semi-final goes on to the final round to be voted-on by everyone. Please vote on sims, and encourage your crew to do the same. But remember: this is NOT a popularity contest. We welcome submissions of your crewmate's sims, but ALL sims should be rated based on their MERIT, and NOT the fact that someone is your crewmate. Any crews found "stuffing the ballots" or ratings, will be disqualified PERMANENTLY - yes, that means the whole crew! If there is a tie vote, those two sims will continue to the next round of voting for a run-off. For a vote to win the final round, at least 10% of its votes must come from a ship other than the one the sim was created on. CONTEST CALENDAR Each round has two parts: submission period and voting period. Each period of the round lasts two weeks. 13. My eReader has rekindled (no pun intended!) my love of reading. I look forward to picking it up every night! Can't recommend it enough.

  14. I'm seriously [...]ed off because my apartment building is telling me that they have to come in and do work on my apartment in the next two weeks to make it more disability-friendly. I told them to wait until I moved, since I don't need the updates. They said they can't because of some alleged regulations deadline. Does hating this BS mean I'm a Republican? I don't want to be a Republican :(

  15. Wanted to let everyone know that the list of Writing Challenge Winners has been updated on our website to reflect all the winning entries for 2011. Also, I've created all the 2011 banners that didn't get finished, and they are now listed below. For 2012 and going forward, we'll have a new banner, supplied by The (Image) Collective team! The winners with banners below are: Cameron Bunag Jaxon McGhee Saveron Della Vetri
  16. It's a lot to ask for someone to read every single sim through the the year that comes through this contest. That's why, if we're just expecting any set of judges to read the smaller group sims that have already won a round, it lessens the burden.
  17. I think it's important that we just keep in mind the workload involved. I don't expect everyone in the fleet who votes in the Top Sims Contest to read every sim in every round. I think if you're going to vote in any given round, you should read the sims. But if I vote in one round and skip the next one entirely, that's okay. I don't want to get into a situation where we have to create an infrastructure for judging that requires a great deal of time and effort. The scalability is just not there. It's a nice thought to say we could have a rotating panel for every round, but in reality the question is where we're going to find those people. Who's going to take responsibility for ensuring that we have judges each round? That they're judging in a timely fashion? That their results are tallied and announced? FltCapt. Riley already has to do quite a bit of busy work to keep the contest going as-is, and I don't think it's fair to add more work onto that. I'll again reference back to the idea of having judges do the final round, and perhaps we can add a quarterly run-off or something, so that each quarter we cull down the group of sims to the top two for the quarter, leaving us with eight sims in semi-finals. The member base could vote, leaving the top three to go to the finals, where a panel then decides the winner among those top three? Something like that doesn't require the effort in putting together a panel of judges on a monthly or weekly basis. I'm definitely in favor of more PR for the contest, but I would mention that we already announce each round on the news, and I believe I've also posted on the fleet email list a few times for the final round. So, the PR then falls on the ships to ensure that they're doing their due diligence.
  18. Now I know someone who works at NASA! #winning with Lauren Worley.

  19. Hmm! Very interesting, very interesting! What does everyone else think about that?
  20. We can't do a judge's panel for every single round. It's too much to ask that three people read up to a 10 sims every two weeks and then rate them. However, what if a panel of judges, who are not from the ships of the top two or three sims at the end of the year, were to be the ones to decide the winner?
  21. A few people have made suggestions in the shoutbox. Please re-post them here. We can consider them together.
  22. Totally over D-list celebs coming out and everything thinking it's a huge coup for the movement. If "the children" you're allegedly coming out to give solidarity to don't even know who you are, how is your action anything more than a narcissistic ploy at reviving your career? I mean, it's great that all of the most beloved roles on TV in the 1980s were actually played by big homos, but memo to all former actors: please don't pretend like coming out 15 MONTHS AFTER "IT GETS BETTER" started, an...
