  1. Please use this thread for any general discussion or questions about the Top Sims Contest. Do not post praise or criticism for submitted sims in this thread. Instead, post those praise or criticisms in the submitted sim's own thread.
  2. ANOTHER weekend? I just had a day off, like, yesterday.

  3. I think I'd have a seriously hard time staying behind. I would imagine that, even though they would be very real and it would feel cruel to leave, I would also end up rationalizing that these people never "really" existed and decide to go back to my real life.
  4. Omg, the scene where Phoebe's grandmother is updating the phone book from the obituaries!

  5. Our fleetwide ceremony has been posted! http://wiki.starbase118.net/wiki/index.php/Awards_Ceremony,_2014

  7. http://comicsalliance.com/star-trek-comic-book-guide-dc-marvel-idw-john-byrne/ Wow! This is quite the resource. And also indictment of really bad comics. At the bottom there's a link to what I believe is software that contains every single comic published up to 2002, which is pretty amazing!
  8. Closes tonight. Vote now if you haven't already!
  9. Here's the sitch: You and your crew investigate an anomaly around a planet. Once your ship crosses the threshold of the anomaly, you find out that there's a settlement on the planet. And when you beam down and talk to the people there, you find out they're all your many-generations-removed descendants! Turns out that your ship, when trying to escape the anomaly, will be thrown 200 years into the past, and you and the other crew will end up building the settlement that you now stand in. There's a catch: You know how you can avoid the same fate when you leave the anomaly now. But in doing so, you erase the people -- all 8,000 of them who are your descendants -- from history. Your own family is waiting back for you on the starbase. Do you go back in time and fulfill this destiny of the planet and your descendants? Or do you use your knowledge to leave without creating this settlement, and erasing these people from history? That's the idea behind DS9 episode "Children of Time." Just re-watched it, and while the actors and producers say they didn't like it much, I thought it was one of the better time-travel episodes. Have you seen the episode? What did you think? And what would you do in their situation? Erase your descendants from history, or stay behind and live a happy, pastoral life?

  14. BAY AREA FRIENDS: Does anyone have a WiFi hotspot they could lend me for this weekend? I'll be happy to pay this month's worth of service/data to use it and can pick it up tomorrow!

  15. This is it, the final round of voting for 2014's Top Sim! The winner of this vote will be considered the Top Sim of 2014 -- one of the most highly coveted writing awards in our community. Voting closes automatically at 23:59 Eastern Time on Sunday, December 28, 2014. Please read all four sims before choosing the one you like the best in the poll above. These sims were submitted by members of the community. A panel of judges consisting of one judge from each ship voted on the best sim from each round. Then, the best sims from each set were culled in run-off rounds voted-on by members of the fleet. The 2014 Hall of Fame archive contains all the sims submitted, as well as the run-off votes. Your vote in this poll is public so that we can ensure that one ship's crew is not "stuffing the ballot box." If we find that any one crew is trying to force someone from their crew to be the winner, that sim will be disqualified and the ship will be ineligible to participate in the contest for all of 2015. Similarly, if anyone is found coercing members of their crew to vote for them, or a sim on their ship, that sim will be disqualified -- before, or after the vote. That does not mean that you can't vote for a sim that was originally simmed on your vessel. You just shouldn't vote for a sim from your ship simply because it's by your crew-mate. Instead, choose the sim that you believe is the best written, most engaging, and embodies the principles of good simming that this community values. For a vote to win the final round, at least 10% of its votes must come from a ship other than the one the sim was created on. LIST OF SIMS – please read all before voting: Jalana Laxyn, "I am here, don't you hear me?"Kalianna Nicholotti, "Legacies"Della Vetri & T'Lea, "You're hired, so deal with it."Della Vetri, "Extreme Babysitting"

  17. I've added most of that, although I edited some parts as the info appears to have been written before Enterprise the series and there was an overemphasis on Voyager which isn't really relevant to the history of the Federation per se. There were also some common "fan theory" errors such as Australia being the last to join United Earth (that is not true, Crusher only was using it as a hypothetical to Picard), etc. There's also a lack of info about the TOS years, and I disagreed with the notion that the 23rd Century was a "relative time of peace" or whatnot, so anyway, we'll have to revise definitely, but it's a good starting point! We can't duplicate content on the main site and the wiki. It's bad for SEO and creates confusion. If you feel like you've integrated most of that page into the wiki, I'll remove the page from the main site and link there directly.
  18. For the UFP "History" link that's still red, perhaps this will work? http://www.starbase118.net/cadets/pre-training-area/ufop-intro/
  19. Brayden, great idea. And Rich, beautiful work as always! Hopefully we can find a way to integrate FNS, the forums, the wiki, and the Community News with this project so that everyone can get updates on changes in diplomatic status and so forth
  20. I'm still just so god[...] angry about this week. Not /just/ that two murdering cops are still free as birds, but also the fact that the entire Republican establishment is lining up to get on TV and try and explain to us how the victims of these crimes deserved their fate. How there is no such thing as racism. How resisting arrest is a murderable crime.

It's such a spectacle, it's so over-the-top ridiculous and disgusting, it's just mind-boggling in ways that I've never imagined that politic...

  21. Please do not perpetuate the idea that bodycams on cops are useless, or a waste of money. Surely no one I know believes that having actual evidence of a police officer commit an atrocity is worthless? Isn't the idea that more evidence of these cops acting like brutal thugs is important to dispelling the myth that "the black guy deserved it"?

There is no magic bullet to the problem of police brutality, including bodycams. But bodycams are an important part of accountability for cops -- the da...

  22. So what WOULD a cop have to do to even be indicted, let alone convicted of homicide?

  23. Why is it so hard to find soft serve ice cream these days? Not yogurt. Not great hard-packed ice cream. S-O-F-T S-E-R-V-E. It used to be so plentiful. What gives?

  24. Very glad to have you with us. My door is always open if you ever need anything!
