  1. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! One of the wonders of the city where I live is that there is more than one language that is spoken by the general population on any given day. Our main language is French but there are many who speak English as well. In fact, when walking around, you may hear a group people speaking to each other in English as they sit around a table eating a dinner at a restaurant, and will easily switch to French when ordering their food from the server. And the opposite also occurs as well. This goes for most of what happens here in Montreal as most of the population is bilingual here. So that brings us to this week's Poll of the Week question. In addition to the language you speak, what language of the Star Trek universe would you also like to know? The list above is not all inclusive and I may have omitted other languages from the Star Trek universe, so if there is a language you wish to add, just put it in the comments and we here at the Poll of the Week are eager to see which Star Trek languages would be your favorite to learn. You may choose more than one!
  2. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! Star Trek: Renegades had its world premiere at the Crest Theater in Los Angeles on August 1, 2015. The project was an independently produced TV pilot for a potential new “Star Trek” online series. As I have not yet seen it I used the outline from the IMDB website for the film's description. There they say that the premise of the film is that a problem with the distribution of dilithium has occured and as a result, space and time is folding in on itself. Chekov lives forever in the Star Trek universe and appears to still be alive as he asks for the help of Tuvok to carry out the mission to fix what is wrong. The film is directed by Tim Russ. So that brings us to this week's Poll of the Week question. Have you seen Star Trek: Renegades yet? If no, do you plan to see it? If yes, what did you think about it? So vote away and please leave your comments below. Be careful though and please try to avoid spoilers for those, like I, who have yet to see the film.
  3. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! Machiavelli said "A great leader should be feared more than loved." Patton said "A great leader is one willing to make the tough decisions." Napoleon said, "A great leader is a “dealer in hope.”" Groucho Marx said, "Only one man in a thousand is a great leader of men—the other 999 follow women." With that being said, which Captain do you think was the greatest leader in the Star Trek franchise? The battle is between Kirk, Picard, Sisco, Janeway and Archer. May the best leader win and as always, don't be afraid to post your thoughts below!
  4. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! I remember watching "Q Who" from the Next Generation and recall the throw away line from Guinan where she said something interesting that I never paid much attention to before, she said something like "When humans are ready, it may be possible to establish a relationship with the Borg, but for now humanity was only raw material to them". Do you think the Borg could ever establish a relationship, even a friendship, with the Federation in the future? Perhaps there is even an alien species that is worse than the Borg as an enemy? What could be worse than the Borg? Q hinted on the same episode that there are "terrors that would freeze your soul". The Borg may be bad, but there could be worse things out there, deeper in space that the Federation haven't even come in contact with. Perhaps, we are lucky we just saw the Borg, because much worse things lurk farther in space. It would be interesting to see if there are beings out there that that make the Borg look like kittens. What are your thoughts? Vote away and don't be afraid to post your thoughts below!
  5. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! It has been a scorcher this week where I live. As such, I have been looking for ways to cool off in my free time. The other day, I went into a local coffee bar and decided to get myself a drink to do just that. At the counter, the person in front of me ordered a tea, turned to me and said that a nice, hot tea actually cools him down. When my turn came up to choose what to have, I tried the same and ordered a tea. Then I had to choose. I am not a tea drinker and apparently there are quite a few choices when it comes to tea. Instead of pondering, I decided to go with what I know. I chose the Earl Grey tea. As I sat sipping on the tea, I realized why I chose that tea. It was the first one that came to mind from my days of watching the Next Generation as it was also Captain Picard's favorite beverage. I smiled to myself wondering how many other things I chose based upon influences from pop culture and was certain it was quite a bit, and to tell you the truth, I am not a big fan of Earl Grey tea. So that brings us to this week's multi-pronged Poll of the Week. Have you ever had Earl Grey tea? If so, did you try it because of Star Trek? Did you like it? If so, how often do you drink it? The pollsters here at Poll of the Week are eager to find out, so vote away and don't be afraid to leave your comments below.
  6. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! Where I live, or close to it, about 45 minutes away in a small town called Pointe Calumet Quebec, Kylie Jenner will be celebrating her 18th birthday partying at a place called the Beach Club in a couple of weeks. Along with her, she will be bringing an entouage of other celebrities along with her as well as Justin Bieber who is supposed to MC the event. I have been to the Beach Club twice before. What started out as a small community dance club on the beach front, has turned into an apparent international sensation. It also helps that the legal drinking age in Quebec is 18. It may be the reason Kylie Jenner is coming here instead of anywhere in the USA since the legal drinking age in most US states is 21. Also, rumor has it she will be paid almost two hundred thousand dollars to make the appearance. Pretty good gig if you can get it, I'm sure. As with most celebrities that I have run across, she will also probably be bringing along her personal body guards for protection. It would be almost dangerous for big name celebrities to walk around unprotected in any public venue, although I have seen it. I ran into Dave Shapelle a couple of weeks ago at a local restaurant about a week ago for example and he was alone and quite a few sports celebrities who were alone. My first run-in with a celebrity was way back in 2003 when I met Angelina Jolie at a local Ben and Jerry's in downtown Montreal. She too was alone at the time. So this week's Poll of the Week deals with personal protection. What if you were famous in the Star Trek universe? If you needed to make a public appearance, which of the security officers portrayed in Star Trek would you trust most to protect you from the crowds of fans? So vote away and let us know why you chose who you did.
  7. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! Last week, for the first time in my life, I watched MASH the movie, and lo and behold, I discovered two Star Trek alumni as stars in the movie! Rene Auberjonois who played Father John Mulcahy and best known to us as Odo on DS9 and Sally Kellerman who played 'Hot Lips' Houlihan and known from the Original series episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before" as Dr Elizabeth Dehner. The movie was basically a dark comedy based on the antics of the main character doctors at MASH 4077th, a front line military hospital during the Korean war. The actors in the movie were the who's who of stars in the late 60s and early 70s being Donald Sutherland as Hawkeye Pierce, Elliott Gould as Trapper John McIntyre, Tom Skerritt as Duke Forrest, Robert Duvall as Major Frank Burns and Roger Bowen as Colonel Henry Blake. After watching it, I almost created a character somewhat like Hawkeye from the MASH movie as an NPC in SIM, but chose not to do that. At least not yet. Who knows what the future holds, however. But that brings us to this week's Poll of the Week. Of the Doctors portrayed in Star Trek, which do you think had the best funny bone? Which Doctor made you take the best medicine of laughter the most? So vote away and please let us know why you chose as you did!
  8. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! I must apologize for my silence over the last two weeks. Real life kept me busy. All is more at ease now and so, I began re-watching the Star Trek movies which I have not seen for several years. As I did so, I began to notice quite a few things different between the Star Trek movies and their television show counterparts. Of course, for the Original series cast, the effects were so much better in the movies than they were on TV. But for the Next Generation films, however, especially with Picard in the film adaptations of the Next Generation, where his behavior oddly changed, there too, the graphics were better. The above is just one example where there is a difference between the television adaptations of Star Trek and their movie counterparts. There are many others as well. So that brings us to this week's Poll of the Week question. Which did you like better? The films or the television shows the Star Trek films were based on? So go ahead and vote, and as always,we'd love to hear your feedback!
  9. Welcome to another edition of the Poll of the Week! Imagine, if you would, a world in which you we left as an orphan and were subsequently adopted by someone famous, royalty or a prominent philanthropist. How your world would be so much different if you were the adopted child of Hugh Hefner, the British Royal family or even that of a couple like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? This week's poll of the week will be focusing on the what if. What if you were born in the universe of Star Trek? What if you were a child of one of the famous Captains on screen and film? Who would make the best parent for you of the Captains portrayed in Star Trek? Go ahead and vote for your new mom or dad above and let us know why you chose as you did!
  10. Welcome to this week's Poll of the Week! Once again I must apologize for my missing poll for last week. As we wind down at work for the summer I was extremely busy. But we are back, and bettah than evah!!! This week we will focus on the first season of each Star Trek series. Generally, as a rule, television series' first seasons are never the best as the actors have not really taken on the persona of the role and the comfort level is a bit lacking. There are also other problems that could arise in the first season of a television series that could be ironed out in future seasons. So that brings us to this week's question for the Poll of the Week. Of all the Star Trek series on television throughout the years, which series did you think had the best first season? So vote away, and as always, we would love to see your comments below!
  11. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! First I would like to apologize for my absence last week. I was feeling under the weather and was unable to post. I am better now, and thus, back! Moving forward, this week we will follow-up on the topic of the last Poll of the Week, who from TNG would you like best to spend the weekend with? This week we'll be focusing on places where you would best like to unwind on the weekend. Where you would like best to head out to, meet friends at and perhaps make new friends at. The characters portrayed in Star Trek like to frequent several places away from the stresses of running their ships to relax. Would you like best to head to the 602 Club was a bar in Mill Valley on Earth in the 22nd century or would you rather go to the Marseilles Poolroom, the holographic bar portrayed in the episodes of Voyager? Maybe your taste is closer in tune with going to the Quantum Café a drink bar found on Earth in the 24th century as portrayed in the Voyager episode "In The Flesh" or maybe Quark's is more up your alley? Perhaps you are a little more adventurous and would be more at home at the Shipyard Bar, portrayed in the 2009 New Star Trek film or maybe you are more old school and Ten Forward would be the place you would be most comfortable with? So go ahead and vote for your favorite watering hole of the future and as always, if you can come up with any others, feel free to add and please let us know why you chose as you did!
  12. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! Well, once again the weekend is coming up. It's funny how that happens every week! Seeing as I work during the week and have to be on my best behavior while I am doing what I do on a daily basis, the weekend allows me to let my hair down a bit and do wild and crazy things I wouldn't quite normally do during the week, and especially while working, unless I wanted to end my career there and then. So with that being said, we come to this week's Poll of the Week question. Of the main characters in Star Trek: The Next Generation, who do you think would be the most fun to hang around with on any given weekend? Your choices are above, but feel free to add if you wish, and as always, let us know why you chose as you did. And if you do wild and crazy things on any particular weekend, remember, play safe and don't do what I would do!
  13. Welcome to this week's furry and purry Poll of the Week! So that's it! I've gone out on a limb and had my character adopt a pet Tribble. And yes, I have yet to name it in SIM. But that's for another poll...or not! This week we will be focusing on the critters we call our silent best friends. That's right everyone. I'm referring to the pets for some of our favorite characters in Star Trek. So who's pet did you like the best or who's pet would you have liked to have had yourself? Was it Captain Archer's Porthos or how about a more alien pet, I-Chaya, who was Spock's boyhood pet Sehlat? Or maybe you'd like best the more exotic Christina the Lycosa tarantula kept by Miles O'Brien, or maybe it was Spot, Data's pet cat that would make you purr. Or how about the morphing cat and partner of the mysterious Gary Seven, Isis, or would it be Neelix the cat owned by Reginald Barklay. Or maybe you are like me, and a simple Tribble would be best. So vote away all and have yourselves a purrrfect week!
  14. Hi Flatmates and welcome to another edition of the Poll of the Week! As I am sure we are all aware by now, our favorite television shows and movies that portray life in the Star Trek universe(s) revolve around those who work in Starfleet, the space navy of the future. Most of the characters we have watched are involved in one form or another directly in the space naval military culture of whatever era of the Star Trek universe we happen to be watching that day. But not all. Except for the original series, there are also many civilians who were regulars on the other incarnations of the Star Trek television episodes. For example, in Enterprise we were introduced to Doctor Phlox, who was not a member of Starfleet at that time. In the Next Generation, we are immediately introduced to the boy wonder Wesley Crusher, who will eventually become a Starfleet officer at a really early age based on several factors which I personally have alot of issues with to begin with, but which can be held out for another debate. In Deep Space 9 we have a much larger group of civilians running around, and who can forget the civilians on board Voyager starting with Neelix and Kes? So that brings us to this week's Poll of the Week question. Who are your favorite non-Starfleet officers in the Star Trek universe? I have left the door open to multiple responses, so go ahead and vote away and tell us why you chose the way you did and if there is anyone you wish to add to the list, let us know!
  15. Welcome to this week's Poll of the Week! After watching the New Trek movies, I tell myself that I can't really blame the actors for their odd portrayals of the iconic characters they are portraying on the big screen. I mean, I even noticed major changes in the behaviors and actions of Captain Jean-Luc Picard between the episodes of TNG and it's movies. But that's perhaps a topic for another poll. These actors are performing the best they know how with the scripts that are handed to them. After all, New Trek has been visually stunning, action packed and has brought in a whole new generation into the Star Trek fandom. The actors and actresses involved are actually very good at what they do and it shows that they do try to portray their characters in a way that may resemble that of those of the original actors and actresses who played those same roles. So this week's question focuses on New Trek and the main characters in this segment of the Star Trek franchise. Which New Trek character is your favorite? And, as always, don't forget to post your reasons why!
  16. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! Star Trek just wouldn't be Star Trek if not for reoccurring antagonists in each series. The original series had the Klingons, Deep Space 9 the Cardassians, Voyager, the Borg and Enterprise had the Xindi. All made regular appearances to somehow disrupt, or at least try to disrupt those various Captains and crews. But who can forget the Next Generation's Q. Portrayed by actor John DeLancie, Q took being an antagonist to the crew of Enterprise to a whole new level. Putting them on trial for the crimes of humanity, introducing the Borg to the Federation, trying to entice them with their wildest desires, placing them into various scenarios to be played out, and of course, throwing them backwards and forwards through time. So that brings us to this week's Poll of the Week question. Did you like the character of Q or did you hate him? Either way, we here at Poll of the Week are eager to find out your thoughts on the omnipotent one and please, let us know why you feel the way you do.
  17. Welcome to this week's most logical Poll of the Week! Vulcan's have been part of the Star Trek universe from the opening scenes of the original pilot of the original series, The Cage to today's most recent incarnations of Star Trek, on the big screen. Vulcans have become a part of Science Fiction lore for almost 50 years and have become part of our culture. I for one can only assume that this is due to the actors that have portrayed Vulcans on both the big and small screen over the years and their skills at being able to do so. Playing a Vulcan, as an actor, could not be easy. As an actor, one is taught to portray emotions based upon what the script calls for. As a Vulcan, should an actor be handed a script that may call for their character to be involved in an emotional situation, the actor has to be able to not only pretend to contain their emotions, but also try to portray that they are not robots. I can only assume that playing a Vulcan, in a realistic fashion, would probably be one of the most difficult roles any actor could take on. So that brings us to this week's Poll of the Week question. Of all the actors that have portrayed Vulcans in Star Trek, who would you say did the best job in doing so? As always, if I missed anyone, don't be afraid to let us know. Oh! And also, please tell us why you chose as you did.
  18. Welcome to another amazing, sensational, viral, tell your friends and family about it, Poll of the Week! What a spectacular week it has been thus far! The State of the Federation Address was released. We here at Poll of the Week got drunk on green beer at the St. Patrick's day parade on Sunday while at the same time we were able to celebrate the birthday of William Shatner! So as I sit and write this, still attempting to sober up literally a block away from where the man who brought Captain Kirk to life attended High School here in Montreal, this week's Poll of the Week will focus on the actor William Shatner himself. What do you think was his best role outside of playing Captain Kirk on Star Trek? Was it Bob Wilson in the Twilight Zone episode Nightmare at 20,000 Feet in 1963 or how about his portrayal as T.J. Hooker from 1982 to 1986? Or maybe it was Bill being the The Big Giant Head in 3rd Rock from the Sun that was your favorite. Or maybe it was Denny Crane on the Practice and then Boston Legal. You may choose amongst these or add your own if you wish as the list can go on for quite a bit. Or maybe you just liked him best as Captain Kirk? So vote away people and don't be afraid to voice the reasons why you feel as you do!
  19. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! I remember a few years back, when I stumbled upon a mini Star Trek series called Of Gods and Men on youtube. It was a three part independent film directed by Tim Russ of Voyager fame and included some original series cast members as well as those from the Next Generation as well as Deep Space 9 all rolled up into one. I must say, I was enthralled. I watched them several times over hoping that more Star Trek indy films would be produced over the coming years. And there were. Fan made Star Trek films have now become a staple to some of us who miss Star Trek and although production quality varies from series to series, there is an obvious love for the Star Trek franchise from all those who write, act and work behind the scenes of these films. On that note, two new fan-produced films are set to emerge shortly to add the the Star Trek universe. Star Trek: Axanar and Star Trek: Renegades and both are being hyped in the Star Trek underground community as the next big thing. Which brings us, of course, to our Poll of the Week question. Which of the two do you think will be better? Will it be Axanar which is set two decades before the original series, or will it be Renegades which will be set 10 years after Voyager's return from the Delta Quadrant? So vote for the independent Star Trek film you are most anxiously awaiting to see on you computer monitor in the near future. Is it Star Trek: Axanar or Star Trek: Renegades? And by the way, don't forget to let us know why! (Thanks for the poll suggestion by Lt. JG Adam William Haase aka TrekTraveller)
  20. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! You've been assigned to an away team and you are to transport into a volatile situation. Your life is depending upon the decisions that will be made by your away team leader, that is your ship's First Officer. One wrong decision and you could all die at a moment's notice. Of the five First Officers we have all grown to know of on television, who would you trust the most in such a situation to get you out of such a situation alive? Would it be Mr. Spock or Commander Riker? Or would you trust Major Kira? Or maybe the former Maquis team leader Commander Chakotay? Or maybe you'd prefer T'Pol to lead you and bring you out of a bad situation alive. So, as always, we here at Poll of the Week are interested in your choices and thoughts on the matter. So vote away!
  21. Welcome to the Poll of the Week! As we come to terms with the loss of a member of one more of the Star Trek original series greats, Leonard Nimoy, this week's Poll of the Week will focus on a few of the more memorable scenes of that of the man who portrayed Mr. Spock in Star Trek throughout the last forty nine years. This is by no means a complete list, and as always, don't be afraid to add to the list. It is hard to imagine that such an iconic character was almost scrapped after the original pilot aired, for being too demonic looking. But his character was kept, albeit changed somewhat from the original portrayal, and as such, became one of the most famous characters in Science Fiction lore. No matter how far the actor, Leonard Nimoy, tried to separate himself from the character he created on the small screen and later on the big screen, he found himself drawn back into that character, and embraced him as the years progressed. And right to the end, with his last tweet spelling the acronym LLAP or better known as "Live Long and Prosper". And so, as a memorial to the passing of a Star Trek legend, this week at Poll of the Week, we will look at some of the most memorable scenes from Star Trek which featured Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock, and you may choose your favorite. If not there, please feel free to add to the list. (Thanks to Lieutenant Johanna MacLaren for suggesting this poll!)
  22. Last tweet by Leonard Nimoy "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP," he wrote on Feb. 22 -- the last four letters, of course, an acronym for "Live Long and Prosper." RIP
  23. Hi everyone and welcome to another spectacular edition of the Poll of the Week! Let's start this week's poll off with a little history lesson, shall we? We all know the iconic opening lines from the original series as spoken by William Shatner "Space, the Final frontier. These are the Voyages of the Starship Enterprise. It's 5 year mission..." We'll stop there, as we now have ourselves a little problem. In the original series, it appears the producers had every intention of having the series last at least 5 years. Unfortunately, this didn't quite pan out as they originally hoped, and the plug was pulled on the series after 3 years. However, Star Trek the original series would eventually come back to life and finish off their original 5 year mission with a series of new missions between 1973–1974 after the original series became popular in syndication. But to keep the budget down, it was animated. After watching some terrific 3D animated movies from both Pixar and Disney, I was thinking that this may be a unique way of bringing Star Trek back to life on the small screen that would not break the budgets of production companies. As CGI and 3D rendering becomes easier to create as the years progress, perhaps this would be an interesting way to revive the small screen adaptation of Star Trek. Or maybe not. If so, would you like to see one of the previous series come back to life as an animated series? If so, which one and why? Or would you rather see a brand new series of this sort? Or maybe you think this is a crazy idea that would never fly, no pun intended? If so, why? We here at Poll of the Week are always eager to know what you think! So vote for your favorite option and don't be afraid to let us know the reasons for your choices .
  24. Welcome one and all to another indescribably amazing edition of the Poll of the Week! I may be going out on a limb here, but I have this feeling that most of us here in the Fleet are fans of Star Trek. So much so, perhaps, that when a new Star Trek film emerges from the suburb of the city known as Los Angeles which lies along the southern coast of the Pacific ocean in North America, and is best known as Hollywood, we have a real itch to watch it. This week we will be focusing on the big screen versions of our favorite franchise, but from a completely different perspective. From that of behind the scenes. Which director, do you think, brought the best qualities of Star Trek to the big screen? Was it Robert Wise who pioneered the first of the Star Trek movie franchise with the 1979 film The Motion Picture? Or how about Nicholas Meyer who directed the iconic 1982 film The Wrath of Khan as well as the 1991 film The Undiscovered Country? Or maybe you fancy Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy who directed both the 1984 and 1986 films The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home? Or Maybe even James Kirk himself, William Shatner, who directed the 1989 film, The Final Frontier? Perhaps you preferred the directing style of David Carson in the 1994 film Generations? Or maybe the direction of Will Riker himself, Jonathan Frakes in the 1996 and 1998 versions of Star Trek, First Contact and Insurrection tickled your fancy? Or was it Stuart Baird who directed the 2002 film Nemesis? Or maybe you like the newest versions of Star Trek from 2009 and 2013, Star Trek and Into Darkness, vision as directed by JJ Abrams? So let us know who you think did the greatest job of bringing Star Trek to life on the big screen, and please, we here at Poll of the Week are always interested to know why!
  25. Once again, another week has passed and another starts anew. That means that it's your favorite time of the week. It's Poll of the Week time! This week we are going to focus on the Enterprise. That famous ship that sailed the stars and which design holds a special place in your heart. Is it the original, Constitution class version as portrayed in the original series? Or how about the refit Constitution Class version as shown in the movies one through six? Or maybe it was the Excelsior Class version as shown in the movie Generations, Enterprise B? Could it be the Ambassador Class version, Enterprise C as portrayed in the Next Generation episode, Yesterday's Enterprise, or how about the iconic Enterprise D itself? Maybe you are old school and found the NX version of Enterprise your favorite? Or maybe it was even one that recieved very little or no airtime? So vote for your favorite version of the Enterprise, and maybe, if you are not shy, tell us why you chose that particular one!
