It’s rather surprising to realize just how many relationships in Star Trek are principally parent/child based. In most cases, these connections between beloved characters has yielded fantastic character building episodes, while often posing intriguing philosophical questions. Since the first episode to feature an example of this trend, TOS’ “Journey to Babel”, in which Spock must confront the burden of command and the needs of his family, a long standing tradition has been maintained. Whether the relationship exists for a short time (such as in the TNG episode  “The Offspring”) or for the length of an entire series (Benjamin and Jake Sisko), they almost always manage to add heart to a show that can sometimes feel clinical and dry.
This week’s poll asks you which parent/child relationship in Star Trek you found most interesting. Give us your vote, and let us know your reasons in the comment section below!

I chose Worf and Alexander. Worf is such a complicated character on his own dealing with his Klingon heritage and Human upbringing. But then throw a kid into the mix and it adds so many layers of complexity to his situation. Alexander was at just the right age during TNG to be the most interesting in my opinion. Not a young infant or a whiny teenager (adult junior grade). It gave a perspective that had been missing up to that point in Star Trek - what is starship life like for a scared pre-teen who has experienced his own emotional ups and downs separate from the main cast?

I went with Endar and Jono (and thus picked the 'Not listed' option) from the TNG episode "Suddenly human." I, for one, wouldn't want to live in Talarian society, and you can tell it is difficult for the crew to sympathize with anyone wanting to remain in Talarian society, there is a strong bond between Endar and his adopted human son.

I almost said Serek and Spock but went with other simply because My choice would be Serek and his Children. Spock, Sybok and Michael Burnham all had interesting complicated relationships with Serek that made us a viewers aware that parenting is complicated in any century human or not.
