Popular Post Alieth Posted December 2, 2020 Popular Post Posted December 2, 2020 (edited) There are no two without a three and as such this JP SHOULD be here. Mainly because of this: Quote Adea: First you’ll have to teach me what an inverse newt renal field is. Aren’t they something to do with Voyager’s warp speed tests? This is it, more than enough Jokes aside, as I always say, it is wonderful to witness the evolution of the characters, how an arch is built in front of our eyes and how it renders them real and credible, even more so if they leave us with little bits of details from previous adventures, from different times, other vessels, which give us a sense of a solid and deep story, of a continuity and inner lore that leaves us wanting to know more and wondering how many sickbays have lost their ceiling. Furthermore, these three goofballs have a knack for humour and at the same time the ability to narrate technically in an enviable fashion, in a style that flows naturally and is a delight to read. Great work, as usual. I have the last part still hot in my inbox and I'm CRAVING to read it. Kudos again for @Addison MacKenzie @Genkos Adea & @Geoffrey Teller Quote ((Station Medical Facilities, Deck 226, Deep Space 224)) Addison and Geoffrey exited the scrub room and made their way into the main surgical ward dressed from head-to-toe in crimson surgical scrubs. The scrubs were likely in an abundance of caution, but she’d learned better to play safe than sorry and figured their intended target would feel similarly. Before proceeding any further into the room, Addison methodically went through her mental checklist to make sure the necessary nurses and equipment were in place and ready to go. Satisfied, she and Geoff moved to the bedside of their patient, covered under a surgical blanket from the neck down. Genkos appeared to be at ease, and if he had any hesitations or anxieties about the impending procedure, he didn’t let them show. To Geoff’s eye, the surgical bay was an impressive cross between medicine and engineering. Tools were laid out in much the same way as his workshop, but here everything gleamed and the floor wasn’t a little sticky. He regarded Genkos with a friendly smile. MacKenzie: ::offering a reassuring smile:: How are you feeling? It was a good question; Genkos couldn’t remember the last time that it wasn’t him wearing the scarlet scrubs and he was more than a little trifle nervous. It was a routine operation but even so, he wasn’t fond of not being in control. Adea: I’d be lying if I didn’t say I wasn’t the teensiest bit nervous. Teller: All business at this point, Genkos. You’ve got nothing to worry about. That’s a Good Job Guarantee. She exchanged a sarcastically skeptical look with Geoff. MacKenzie: It’s not too late to back out, you know… Teller: ...peg leg is still on the table. I mean it - it’s outside - couldn’t help myself. Adea: I’m okay thank you Geoff, I was stuck in the bathroom with tweezers for half an hour last time. Teller: Yeah it’s just as well, I never did get past that groin splinter problem. ::Shaking his head sadly:: Alright Doc…::Geoff smirked when they both started to answer:: Addy. I’ve got the mount and the neural interface ready for install, and the appendage is assembled and ready. It’ll take us a little while to get the interface calibrated after we get it mounted, Genkos, but we’ve got a way of speeding that along if you’re interested. Adea: ::raising an eyebrow:: You do? Her eyebrows raised high and her eyes widened in an attempt not to communicate a shred of skepticism. MacKenzie: He does. Teller: Well...instead of napping through all this ::Geoff gestured to their surroundings:: if you stay awake and do some basic motor control tests when we ask, we’ll be able to shave days off your recovery time. Otherwise, you’ll be a little wobbly on that thing...and you might kick through the floor. Which is a problem on a space station. ::Geoff thought about it for a moment:: Well..a bigger problem. Adea: ::starting to sit up:: I’m sorry, what? MacKenzie: Listen, it’s - Teller: It only happened in one of the simulations. Almost impossible. Nothing to worry about. But avoid inverse neutrino fields all the same. MacKenzie: ::echoing Geoff, nodding affirmatively:: Nothing to worry about. Adea: First you’ll have to teach me what an inverse newt renal field is. Aren’t they something to do with Voyager’s warp speed tests? Teller: No that’s a salam….you know what, forget I said anything. It’ll be fine. Almost definitely. Geoff shrugged and moved to the tray of equipment and components as Addison offered a more scientific explanation. MacKenzie: It’ll be more helpful to have you awake - we can make more intricate modifications in real time, which should get you up and moving faster. Adea: I’m happy to stay awake, just please… if I start screaming, knock me right out. ::he looked Addison in the eyes:: I’m trusting you to do that. ::gesturing to Geoff:: He’d probably just thwack me with the peg leg She locked eyes with Genkos. MacKenzie: You don’t have anything to worry about. (beat) Unless you see him pick up a laser scalpel. Then, you should definitely panic. From the equipment table Geoff snorted without looking up. Teller: Pfft, dinky little laser scalpel has nothing on a plasma torch. But sadly I left mine back on the Thor. Addison clapped her hands. MacKenzie: Alright, gentlemen, are we ready to get started? Geoff made a quick, final inspection of his tools. The surgical bays sensors had already been calibrated and the computer uplink to the diagnostics embedded within the prosthetic were online. Teller: Ready when you are, Doctors. Adea: As ready as I’ll ever be... Addison and Teller moved to opposite sides of the table, nurses flanking each of them, ready to assist. She picked up a tricorder to check the status of Adea’s nerve endings, comparing them quickly to the scans taken when the accident occurred. She nodded satisfactorily. MacKenzie: Everything looks good here. We’re going to give you a local - you shouldn’t feel any pain, but you might feel some slight discomfort, or a tugging as we work to adjust the prosthetic. If there’s anything that feels uncomfortable, let me know and we can up the dosage. Adea: ::pursing his lips:: What every patient likes to hear “you might feel some tugging”. Addison nodded to the nurse on her right, who proceeded to pass her the hypospray. She pressed the device into the bottommost flesh of his leg, then passed the device back to the nurse who returned it to the instrument tray. The nurse then picked up the surgical headset which had magnifying glasses attached to the interface and a light for greater illumination. And now, for the task at hand. This moment had been a long-time coming - nearly a year, in fact, and Addison believed this was the perfect opportunity to seek vengeance upon her colleague for scoffing at a similar scenario during their time together on the Diligent… A scenario for which he unnecessarily put one of their colleagues in an uncomfortable situation. MacKenzie: Alright, let’s begin. Her eyes met Geoff’s. MacKenzie: Mr. Teller, you take the lead. Geoff blinked and looked back towards the mentally imbalanced changling that must’ve replaced his friend. Teller: You want me to take the lead, Doctor? What, you have a hot date somewhere? She couldn’t help but smirk. MacKenzie: You know, Captain Rahman has a saying… See one, do one, teach one. We’ve done this before, so you’ve seen one - now, time to do one. Adea: Um… guys? Teller: Is this about the ceiling? I can get you a ceiling. A really nice one. I know a great ceiling guy now. Addison looked around in mock bewilderment. MacKenzie: Ceiling seems fine to me, chap. Adea: Can either of you actually hear me? Geoff grimaced and tried the best to hide his discomfort. Addison’s smirk was all the confirmation he needed that she was thoroughly enjoying herself. Genkos on the other hand seemed to be rethinking his healthcare decision making paradigm. Teller: Well, if Addison MacKenzie MD, PhD, FASsssSssswhatever thinks I can take care of this, who am I to argue? ::Geoff turned to one of the attending nurses:: Prepare a 10cc hypo of anesthizine. ::As the nurse started heading towards Genkos, Geoff put a hand out:: No, not for him. For me. Addison immediately pointed at the nurse. MacKenzie: ::deadpan:: You touch that hypo and I’ll have your credentials permanently revoked. Geoff huffed and shook his head. Teller: Genkos, you were right, I should’ve made that compartment a flask holder. Oh well, no use crying over spilled rum now. Anyway. We’ve anestized the lower part of your appendage, so there should be no feeling at all. Let's give it a quick check. Geoff found a reasonably heavy tool on the nearby table and gave Genkos’s left leg a quick smack. Adea: Didn’t feel a thing… Your bedside manner needs some working on, Geoff. Teller: Sorry sorry, just making sure we got the right leg, Doc. I know it’s the other one. ::Geoff fished out a padd and made a small but urgent correction:: Addison shook her head and made a mental note to forward the shenanigans on to Lieutenant Alieth, who would no doubt have a field day when the Thor’s first officer returned. MacKenzie: Unbelievable. Teller: So Addy, we need to install the baseplate and the mount, add the neural interface to his fibular nerve plexus, make sure it’s communicating properly with the mount...and then this thing ::Geoff nodded to the appendage itself:: Should just snap right on. If I get the foot the wrong way round we can always try it again. How long does that local anesthetic last anyway, Addy? Addison snapped her fingers at Geoff. MacKenzie: Just like that! Very good, Commander. It seems you were paying attention after all. When he starts screaming, I imagine it’ll have worn off… Geoff nodded at the easy to understand instructions. Teller: Pfft, and you Doctors make such a big deal out of this. I swear, I’ve seen more tricky plasma manifolds. ::Geoff smirked. The look he was getting from Addy could’ve melted the hull off a battlecruiser:: Alright Genkos, lie back - should be ready to have you test in an hour or so. Till then just relax and imagine we know exactly what we’re doing. Addison peered over to reassure Genkos. MacKenzie: I won’t take my eyes off him, don’t worry. Adea: You had better not… Genkos lay back down and waited for the dull feelings of the operation to begin.
