Without Kirk even a dying Kirk generations would have been a pale lack luster film. Really after First Contact they began to go down hill tng the writers just did not translate it to the big screen. TOS handsdown beats TNG on the Big Screen.

Personally, what TOS-TOSM taught us is that no matter how far off this Blue marble third marble from Sol, we travel from, there will always be those elements that do not learn from the past, therefore they are doomed to repeat it; and that is when heros have to use extraordinary measures to save the universe from itself, that and that the Human Adventure Continues.
