[2008: JAN-FEB] Writing Challenge Discussion
Salak replied to Jordan aka FltAdmlWolf's topic in 2008
*shakes head* I've got a decent idea, just haven't managed to actually translate it into words on the screen... gah!!!! Don't see me making the deadline -
...and it's brilliant to see you back Alana!
-
Is that it for this round? Who's won/is in any run off poll? I'll be somewhat shocked if Stinging Truths hasn't won, how that's currently showing as only 4 stars defies logic. I'd've given it 6, or even more if it were possible given it's the best I've read in... probably at least 3 months. And the previous sim of close to that quality I can think of is by one of those two writers as well! And no, I'm not saying that just because I'm on the same ship. The fact it was nominated by someone on a different ship only adds to the argument about its' quality surely?

hehe I've got so many penny pieces I dunno what to do with them at the sec. I'm taking a secret mission angle by the way. -

No Sense Toni, no Sense My entry is coming together, just need one or two pieces to fall into place in my framework before I write it proper. -

I've not read Elisa's entry (I never read entries until after deadline or after my entry is complete) so can't comment on that but think I've got an idea. Might have an entry of my own out soon, if I can work it into a decent quality story. -
Wasn't sure, hence why it went here. Noted for future
-
Quite fair enough
-
By the way, Lt.Cmdr Riley and Lt.Reynolds are of the Indy-A, NOT Ursa Major, even if the sim may have been set on the Ursa (joint after-ceremony party)

V.Quick feedback: Loved reading Stinging Truths on the group list when I got it. Brilliant JP from two of the best writers in the fleet. The Admirals sim was good but don't feel it's quite of the same calibre. She can write well though and I will not be amazed if she does win a contest again at some point, think she has in the past. Toni, I love description and felt your sim could do with more of it before I could think of it as a potential Top Sim. Too much dialogue and not enough setting, description, explanation of characters reactions, etc... The dialogue itself is good though. I feel this should be more for recognising the writing and achievement of OTHERS. Thus a crewmate would submit your work if they feel your sim is of such an outstanding standard. I'm tempted for future rounds to deduct a point from any mark i give to people submitting their own work, though haven't in this round.

*only NOW sees what the previous topic was* Darn. If I'd seen that, I'd've entered! I could write a novel on that theme, lol! -

Congrats everyone. Sadly wasn't able to get my effort together but still, well done to Jhen & all the entries, and I'll echo the thanks to the judges and the Fleet Admiral for running the competition. -

Ok, I've planned my entry in 3 segments. I need to work out how they'll link up yet but got it sketched out. Got a first draft for the first bit (written on the train on Thurs evening!) but want to rewrite that to keep some information back for the other two segments. Hopefully I'll get it all together in the coming week. -

lol! Well I'm out of town this weekend seeing family, my bro MIGHT let me write it when he's asleep. I've had a setting for ages but not really a proper plot to go with it. I could likely write a good piece of descriptuion on what I've got but not a good story at the mo. That's the situation I normally find myself in. -

*chuckles* If I do, it'll be far from my best piece of writing. We'll see. I'll try and find some time between simming, wiki'ing, foruming, societies, essay writing, lectures... -

I guess that's true Jhen. And my Writing Challenge entries have never been to the standard of my simming. I might do but don't expect me to enter. -

As per usual, I've realised my idea is rubbish, won't stand a chance and thus haven't really developed it for entry. Anyone else want to try from indy though, would love to see it... -

Well I've got an idea at least. Took me a day or two but got an inspiration walking home from the local shop the other day, lol. Not sure it's a great idea but I'll give it a shot at fleshing it out. Could be a good topic to write on, wonder how many entries we'll get this time? -

lol, true, but aching to see it so I can think of ideas... Might get around to entering one again at some point. -

Congrats to Danzia of course, but just wondering how soon we can expect to see the next challenge title? -
Phew, glad it's not just me. Might be part of why the number of entries this time around is so low so far though.
-
I do appreciate it's a writing challenge, just would be useful if it wasn't a challenge just to understand what the topic actually means, let alone write something based on it. I tried looking it up and couldn't make heads or tails of it. In fact, that confused me even further. i.e. I hardly understand the topic this month, and it's tricky to write something about a title that makes no sense to me.
-
Every couple of months is good, like that. Some of the themes are okay but I'm not a fan. Made this rounds topic too specialised for me to be remotely interested really, I've not even sketched out 1 idea, when in the past I've come up with mulitple for some topics. My honest opinion, not intending to offend anyone.
-
I've fallen foul of that myself a few times... Right, I like what's been said already, though personally I like the judges system. I can see the problems coming up with it though so it's been curious to read the suggestions here. Ben's idea sounds good, so maybe try and combine a few of the suggestions? I'd try and come up with my own but brains a tad dead after a Modern History exam earlier this afternoon coupled with the heat.

K, thanks. Now, have to see if I actually get around to writing something...
