+ LuxaLorana Posted October 3 Posted October 3 Absolutely loved this SIM from @Marty Tucker and his Pops ( @Karrod Niac). I do love these little insights into characters and relationships with their family members, especially when it helps inform who they are. Wonderful! Quote ((Compartment 7-0213, Habitation Ring, Deep Space Nine)) A tight, unpleasant smile found its way to his face. Anyone who didn’t know him would assume he’d just stepped on a nail. MT3: Who says I haven’t? Still wanted to hear it from you, boy. Marty half-heartedly waved him off. Tucker: Enough about me, Pops. How’s the vineyard? Mom? Martin’s shrug was miniscule and yet all encompassing. MT3: They’re both fine. Vineyard could use a few more working hands but that’s nothing new. Your mother just got back from a trip….fortunately she was out of the system when things started going haywire so as far as she knows it was all just some big accident. Don’t tell her different, it’ll be bad for her heart. He’d been so wrapped up in what was going on in the Isles and Deep Space Thirty-three that he almost completely forgot about the Frontier Day debacle. And Pops was right, it would just get his mother all worked up and she was a royal pain all worked up. MT3: The secret is safe with me. I’m just glad she wasn’t caught up in all that. Doctor Beck lost a hand because of Frontier Day. so I get it. There was an awkwardness between the two that he was just starting to clue in on. Marty wanted to spill his guts so to speak, but Pops really wasn’t for all the touchy-feely sorta things. Martin was a take it and stuff it down in the pit of your soul kind of guy. He knew why, and that was Grandpa was a hardass. And Pops was a product of that environment. Between that and the expectation that he would enlist in Starfleet hung over his head for years, and then he enlisted. If you were a Tucker, Starfleet was the only option. Though Marty never felt like some sort of pressure was put on him, he wanted to do it right, and there was no way he would enlist. He’d chosen the route that made him the family's only officer, which Marty thought was part of what ticked off his Dad. Martin Senior scowled at the display and chewed on his words for a moment before spitting them out. MT3: Look son, you know I’m not one for jawin…you got something you want to say to me I recommend you come right out and say it. Otherwise I can try finding your mom, she should be back up at the house… Tucker: I know you’re not Pops. But we do need to talk... MT3: Alright son I suppose you’ve earned that much. Speak your piece. Marty took a deep breath, this had been coming for a while. It was unspoken, and now he needed to put it out in the world, or it would eat him up, and he didn’t need that stress. That was half the reason he hadn’t called home sooner. Tucker: Alright, here it is, and I really don’t want you to get all pissed. But, do you not like the fact I’m an officer, much less if you were still in you’d have to refer me to sir? Marty tried not to make a face, it was word vomit. It was there and he sure as hell couldn’t take it back. But he felt that his father had taken some kind of issue with him attending the Academy and all. And it bothered Marty. Martin Senior did something he hadn’t done in the last several months and barked a laugh so loud it scared one of the nearby dogs. MT3: Is that what you think? Son…I don’t have a bit of problem with you or with them shiny pips on your collar. You always had a good head on your shoulders…bit thick sometimes, but that’s my fault much as yours. What I’ve got a problem with is officers, full stop. I knew a few good ones, sure…but I knew enough bad ones to never automatically trust an officer. Kept me and mine alive, boy. Thought you would’ve figured that out for yourself by now. Marty could feel the heat rising in his cheeks. Tucker: ::rubbing a hand behind his neck:: Well, crap on toast Pops. I thought you might have had a problem, but apparently I’m way off base on this… Marty tried not to make a face; it was word vomit. It was there, and he sure as hell couldn’t take it back. But he felt that his father had taken some kind of issue with him attending the Academy. He’d been carrying the weight on his shoulders since he’d shipped out to Denali Station in the very runabout his Dad had gifted him. Tucker: Boy, do I feel like an asses ass….I owe you an apology. I mean…I thought… Marty knew better than to continue on because he was just going to make a fool out of himself, by stuffing both feet into his fat mouth. His Dad was right about one thing, he was a bit thick and this proved it above all else. MT3: You don’t owe me or nobody else a damn thing, son. If this has been weighin on you…if this’s why you ain’t been calling home….well then I suppose I owe you the apology…sir. There was no hint of disdain or mockery in Martin’s voice this time. His expression, while frighteningly intense, was plain and earnest. Regardless he still felt like an ass. Tucker:::he chuckled, waving him off:: Let’s call it even Pops. Chalk it up to a big misunderstanding. Marty let out a breath, one he hadn’t really known he’d been holding. He loved his father, but the love he showed in return was well…it was just Pops, and that was the way it was. Tucker: Alright Pops, I’m burning up latinum making this call. Ships in dry dock, and we all had to move onto Deep Space Nine until she refitted. Martin Senior leaned in and, for just a moment, the distance between the two of them could’ve been measured in meters instead of lightyears. MT3: Then I’ll let you get back to it, Chief Engineer…remember what I taught you….The ship takes care of you…. He knew what was coming. Tucker: ::he smiled::...So you can take care of her. I know Pops, you taught me that, many moons ago. He offered the screen a curt nod and reached for the controls. MT3: That ships in good hands…you were always the smart one in the family…smarter than me anyhow. Keep your head down, don’t volunteer for nothing and whatever you do, never get in an arm wrestling contest with a gorn. Remember all that and you just might make it back for a visit some time. Tucker: ::smirking:: Gorn, no arm wrestling got it. Well, before you go, I’m thinking of coming home for a visit next shore leave, I’m tied up with the refit this time around, I’m trying to get a few hours to myself. The weight he felt lifted off his shoulders was amazing. It was like he had a little pep in his step, and he would try to make it home on his next leave. MT3: Your room’s right where you left it, son…doors always been open to you. Besides, could use a Chief Engineer around here…that is if you can remember how to fix something simple as a hydroponic system. Go on then, get back to that ship of yours. The final words didn’t come easily but Martin Senior knew they were important. Maybe more important than he’d realized. MT3: It’s good…good hearing from you, Marty. Tucker: It was good to see you, Pops… Marty reached over and closed the comm. He sat back in his chair, hands behind his head. That had gone better than he had expected. Come hell or high water he was going to make it home next leave, he had too. [End] ========================== Lieutenant Marty Tucker Chief Of Engineering USS Ronin NCC-34523 Capt.
