Ensign Morro Caras - Tough Room [Act III]

@Morro Caras just coming in with an epic start to act 3 like it's nobody's business. Not only did Vio pick up on the hints that myself and @Erik Johnson had been dropping about the tension in Lhando & Tox's friendship, since the start of the last shore leave; Vio also gave us a great insight into not just Orion culture; how they can offend someone but still be charming enough to do business but also his background growing up as a pirate. Moreoever, He then tied that into what Morro was seeing in Lhando & Tox's behaviour and flipped the tables, setting us two up for what's next. Absolutely amazing work!!!!

Quote

(( Shuttle Bay, Deck 19, USS Unity Dow ))

There was an odd silence in the ride over. It was extremely short but they couldn’t trust transporters now either. Caras attempted to read the mission logs coming in output to text form on his PADD. He had finished his own report earlier and was reading the logs created by the other officers, making sure to familiarize himself with the other experiences the crew had seen on this mission, hoping to find something they were missing about this mission.

As the shuttle landed, Caras stood up and straightened his uniform. He watched as Lieutenant Arlil turned around in his chair, very captain-like, and addressed them.

Arlill: We need to be more vigilante that ever, we’re all experiencing hallucinations we can’t explain and further can’t prevent. So check twice with everything, if you see something that doesn’t make sense or shouldn’t be there, ask each other if they can see it. (beat) ::a pondering scowl crossing his face, turning towards Nilsen:: Mr. Nilsen, please see what you can do about bringing the Dow’s basic navigation online, Mr. Caras we’ll need those impulse reactors or we’re not going to get far. I’ll take see about bringing the main computer back online.

Nilsen: Will do mate; Morro, I also heard your message earlier, I’ve got the Dow being scanned but until we get main power online, we’ll have to rely on someone on the OEB hailing us when something happens.

Caras: Understood. I’ll get the reactors working. It is possible that once I get them online, they might be swarmed with those devices. If we get the scan I might be able to take them out before they can begin draining the systems again.

Morro nodded as Arlill gave them his orders. Morro felt a tinge of guilt remembering what his sister said when he told her he was going to join StarFleet. “No matter what you do, you’ll be their little dog and have to do as they say, even if you know better”. He wasn’t a little dog. He respected Toxin and Lhandon both as men and as officers. Yet the saying still stuck in his mind.

Arlill: Since things aren’t as they appear we need to stick together, let’s get down to engineering, we should be able to perform most of the tasks from there.

Nilsen: Pass us your tricorders.

Morro handed him his tricorder for a second and watched as he ticked it to the connections menu. Caras wondered why he did this until Lhandon spoke up.

Nilsen: I've interfaced each tricorder, we can use it to check and double check everything we see.

Caras: That is excellent! We didn’t even think to try something like that. We did see energy spikes every time there was a hallucination, but it was very minimal, and possibly metaphasic...

Caras heard a tone go off. That briefly interrupted him. It was from the shuttle letting them know that it was safe to disembark.

Caras: We can now use the combined processing power of the tricorders to test variance integrity. Those “alien” nodes are still scattered throughout the ship. If any one of them pulls power, the three tricorders will let us know with a sound. So we’ll know we’re seeing some kind of hallucination or that something has activated. It won’t stop us from seeing it, but at least we’ll know that whatever one of us is seeing, isn’t real.

Arlill: That’s a great idea, let’s do that on the way

Nilsen: Any more ideas like that I'll be begging Josh to let us steal you for Ops. ::smirk::

That paralyzed Caras for a second. He had never thought of a duty station outside of engineering. It was what he was always meant to do, or so he felt. Working within the splintered syndicate he and his sister had thanklessly made a name for their family after their parents' glory days were long gone. His parents took all the credit, but there was little to be given with the pirate crew that they were with. Caras being recognized for his ideas was new to him, let alone someone wanting them to come to their post. It felt good to be wanted, but he was too nervous to leave the lane he had caved for himself.

Caras: ::letting out a weak laugh:: I’m afraid I'd be no good to you all. Engineering is the only thing I really excelled at at the academy. Actually I even struggled with that for my first couple years. The only thing I got great marks in other than that was diplomacy.

Nilsen: What I’m gonna do when we get to engineering is move some of the limited power around and see if that can at least get the navigational systems fired up, Morro, once you get the reactors going, I can take a bit of the power for the thrusters and then we can see about maybe moving the Dow just a little bit.

Caras: ::tapping his now overstuffed engineering kit:: This time I came fully prepared for what we’ll need. ::looking to Lieutenant Arlill: Lieutenant, are you going to helm the Unity Dow once I get the impulse reactors going?

Arlill: Response

Morro led the charge, knowing exactly where to go now that he’d already made the journey to engineering twice. The turbolifts were no longer safe with the secondary power back on. It was even risky for them to take them the second time after what Morro assumed was phased back to the mess hall. He had his tricorder in front of him, but looked back to see an exchange between the two Ops officers.

Nilsen: Hey, the dream team is working together again, amirite? ::slapping Toxin on the chest with a wide smile::

Arlill: Response

Caras: oO not about to comment on that. This has seemed kind of tense or one sided since we boarded the shuttle, I wonder what has gone on between these two?Oo

Orion culture was extremely sociable. While some species were reclusive, Orions loved to mingle. They had a reputation of wronging someone and still being able to come back and do business. Morro had this as a native talent that he had gotten from Osmosis growing up. Mostly watching his parents and his older sister worm their way out of trouble with their words, despite facing down difficult odds, and even higher disruptor barrels. Morro Remembered the gym back on the Butler and how Toxin left with his friend almost immediately when Morro and Lhandon had arrived. Was Toxin jealous of Morro? Was Lhandon jealous of Toxin’s workout buddy, Henry? Morro, the sociable and diplomatic Orion, now wanted to get to the bottom of this. If there was something to get to the bottom of.

Caras: Since we can no longer take the turbolift shaft, and if we’re trying to avoid the nodes, the Jefferies tube junction is right up here.

Ensign Caras removed the access panel, and crawled in but waited for the other two officers. He wanted to make sure he could hear their conversation.

Arlill/Nilsen: Response

Caras: I’m not sure why but this feels a lot better to me than crawling down the turbolift shaft in the dark with the EVA suit on.(beat) So when was the last time you both were on an away team with one another? This does count as an away team right? Even though this is another starfleet vessel.

Caras tried to keep it light, see if they would reminisce about something or try to find out when their conflict areas were. He doubt he would be able to get to it, but he wanted to at least hear their history

Arlill/Nilsen: Response

Caras: Oh I see… Lieutenant Arlill, what made you pick Lhando as your assistant ops chief?

oOThat should get a positive reaction and get Toxin to talk about Lhando’s good traits, put everyone in a good moodOo, Caras thought to himself. Little did he know he was picking at a scab.

They made the crawl to the point of the junction where they could finally take the ladder and start going down. No ping from their tricorders… yet. But maybe they had bigger internal struggles to overcome.

🥰Thanks! You all had been building it for awhile. But Toxin had implied his annoying enough in the opening part of the scene for Caras to finally take notice. Really curious at where it's going to go, an if he's just going to make it worse. the Act III of a mission is the perfect time to see that stuff boil to the surface right?

Oh that it is. I do hope you enjoy the ride.
