Ensign Elijah Kovacs: Bunches of Luck!

((Transporter Room 1, Deck 4, USS Octavia E Butler))

The situation in the transporter room wasn’t looking up for the three lowly OEB crew members cast unto the somewhat haunted plane.

Kovacs: (shaking his head) It’s having trouble establishing a consistent connection. ::closing the device:: We’re gonna have to get a bit old school, let’s see what’s in the bag.

Everything hung on what was in Una’s bag of tricks, and Eli thanked the gods for the nth time that their luck had held out. He wondered if in that final medical before graduating if all Starfleet officers got a hypo of liquid luck given how many close calls the crew seemed to scrape themselves through.

Loq: What does 'old school' mean? And can any of these tools help?

Una: ::pulling out tools:: Hyperspanner and a hit of Hammer. An old-school analog setup. A few bangs, a reboot, and it's good to go. Just kidding, all standard procedure, just old-fashioned. No improvisation, or maybe just a little creativity. Or, sometimes, it exploded something but is rare!

Kovacs: That could work, we can use it to manually trigger a diagnostic routine where something dematerialize and rematerialize on the same pad. Good eye!

Loq: What needs to be done, and how can I help?

Una: Hold my hiperspanner for a minute and check the rollback routine. All is set up now, the transporter should beam us with a negative wave, opposite to the first one. If we are lucky it will put even the banana back together. Maybe Loq-Yinn would like to try a banana?

Loq took the tool, but it didn’t seem he was sold on Una’s sense of humor.

Loq: Realistically, what are our chances of our going back into phase and not turning into... [they indicated the mess on the walls] banas?

Una: mmmm I would say fifty fifty!

Kovacs: Ghostly ensigns aside, right now, the strongest evidence I have is that we didn’t explode when we arrived here and hopefully won’t on the return trip. I’m not going to put a percentage on our chances, but it’s about the same as a hope and a prayer.  I’d appreciate anything you could think of that might boost our chances. oO So that if it does fail, at least I won’t be the sole guilty party. Oo

Una wrapped up her work and placed her tools away, and each of them took their positions on the transporter pads.

Kovacs: (nodding) That should work. ::looking between them both:: You ready to get outta here?

Una: I know that you would love to spend the eternity with me. ..

Kovacs: Ummmm… in another lifetime perhaps. oO Girllll take a hint! Oo

And in that moment, it seemed like she was telepathic because she finally let on that she was teasing him.

Una: No worries I was joking.

Una sent the signal to activate the transporters, but just before the sequence started, the room filled with a blinding white light, and he fell to his knees in pain. He felt fire burning all over him for what felt like an eternity but was only a moment. He quickly recovered from the pain, looking at his unblemished skin.

Kovacs:  I have no clue what just happened, but I don’t want to be here if that happens again.

They dematerialized, and then rematerialized in the same room. However, this one smelt distinctly ‘banana-y’. As Eli looked around, he couldn’t see any banana residue; the grumpy ops officer having dealt with it. He assumed Josh would task him to be the one to de-banana the room.

Una: Well we're still alive, I think....

Qurgh'Loq: It worked! I'm back in my other body. And I'm with the captain. I can tell her what we saw.

Kovacs: That’s great. oO And also strange. Oo Let’s get out of here before that transporter decides to activate again.

And with that, each of the lower deckers stepped down and out the door. Eli couldn’t help but wonder why there were no rescue crews. Had the ship been too busy to notice their disappearance, or was it that they weren’t that noticeable? As he contemplated this, a faint ensign in blue, banana in hand, nodded their head toward him and blunk out of existence.

[End of Act 2 for Kovacs]

"The lower deckers" One of the best B-plot ever! Thank you so much! @Josh Herrick @yinn
