Quote (( Counseling Suite, Deck 10, USS Ronin )) Cookies and tea acquired, Hiro sat comfortably but alert in his chair. It was risky to get too settled-into a chair at the moment. He didn't really want to make grandparent noises in front of his new boss and friend. Dekas: ::a soft laugh:: I don’t normally mention the fact I like sunflower seeds. Too many people make jokes about my diet being literal bird seed when I say it. He finished his own bite of cookie, enjoying the nuttiness of the sunflower seeds while allowing Dekas time to decide where he wanted to begin. That was always the hardest part of these types of meetings. Hoping it would help, Hiro offered a gentle intro - something they'd both experienced: Jones: That was a wild mission, huh? I figure we'll be pretty busy in here before long with people needing to process it all. Dekas: Wilder than I was expecting it to be. Jones: And how about you, Dekas? From what I've gathered, you had a time of it. Dekas drew a very deep breath. How many times had Hiro seen it? This building of inner strength in order to clear a mental or emotional hurdle. Dekas: Hell of a time. Hell of a time. I feel like there are a million different things putting me on the verge of tears from stress right now. Which didn’t used to feel embarrassing to say out loud, but it feels slightly embarrassing right now. I’ve been here less than five minutes, I-I shouldn’t be threatening to cry on you this early into this, you know? Not very professional. The crack in his voice - that was strength. More than all the bravado of the Klingon fleet combined, the willingness to admit we aren't strong enough alone speaks of a strength that can overcome anything, because it draws in all the strength of those with whom we've surrounded ourselves rather than shoulder the full burden alone. Jones: Professionalism be damned. We're two friends having tea, and you need have no fear of judgement from me. Tears are good. They're cathartic. If that's what you need right now, I support you. What's weighing on you, Dekas? Dekas: I don’t even know where to start. Because the impulse in my head right now is to ask you for a hug first? Which is probably weird. Everything I do is weird. I can be acting normal and it’s weird. I just, I feel… I’m struggling. I almost feel like it’s worth it? I mean are… would you.. is that something I can ask for? Words are cheap sometimes. Hiro didn't answer with words. Grateful for his seat-edge perch, he got up, stepped across to the sofa, sat, and embraced the incredibly brave Aurelian in one smooth movement. There was only a brief moment where Dekas hesitated before Hiro felt the gesture returned. He wouldn't let go until Dekas did. He spoke more softly, being so close to him, but his voice was steady and he hoped soothing and reassuring. Jones: Admitting we aren't ok takes a lot of strength. Accepting help takes even more. Every single one of us is broken in one way or another. It's why we need each other. Dekas' feathers were warm. The embrace was incredibly comforting even to Hiro. He hadn't realized how badly he'd needed it too until this moment. As the two of them supported each other in this simple, instinctual, basic gesture, Hiro felt connected - to Dekas, to the Ronin, to every crewmember who would no doubt be visiting this office in the coming weeks, and to every living thing in the universe. They were there to care for each other. Sometimes that care was as simple as a hug. When they finally separated, Hiro offered a small smile. Jones: Better? Dekas: Response Jones: ::offering the plate of cookies:: Have another cookie, and share whatever you're comfortable sharing. Dekas: Response Jones: Why don't you start with exploring what about this last mission has you so shaken. We can go from there. Again - I'm not going to judge you for anything, so whatever you'd like to say, you're safe to do so.
