Odd Jobs: Lieutenant JG Charlotte DeBarres, USS Arrow

In “odd jobs” we examine some less traditional posts and the characters and writers behind them to inspire you to investigate potential for your own character.

Today we have the pleasure of speaking to Lieutenant JG Charlotte DeBarres playing a Human Female Mission Specialist assigned to the USS Arrow.

DeVeau: Tell us a little about the writer behind the character — where in the world do you hail from, what things you like to do in your spare time, et cetera?

DeBarres: I currently hail from Maryland, I love military history, we have lots of pets and I have been an active runner for the past 30 years, but the joints are now in need of a major overhaul, but still hitting the pavement. I work with people that have significant disabilities.

How long have you been a fan of Star Trek, which series is your favourite, and why?

I have been a fan of Star Trek since the late 1970’s watching STOS in reruns on WSEE-TV at 4:30pm, as I raced home from my paper route.  However, DS9 is my favorite, I love the ongoing story and the characters are so rich along with the large recurring cast of characters.

Would you share with us a little bit about your character and what you think makes her special?

My current PC Charlotte is a bit of a care free jack of all trades. She follows the rules for the most part and has a DRY sense of humor. She may not be great at all of them but she is good. However, don’t put her in sickbay. EEEK!

As a crewmember of the USS Arrow, your duty post is that of Mission Specialist.  Would you share with us what the role of a Mission Specialist is?

It could be simming as a defacto Security officer one mission and engineer or navigator the next. It is really what Star Trek is all about. Filling in as needed just seems to be perfect for her.

So why mission specialist?  What drew you to that particular posting?

LOL, the Captain requested me to take mission specialist for a new ensign coming aboard the ship. It has been a blessing in disguise as she and I get to do a bit of everything and keeps things fresh and always interesting.

What is the most difficult aspect of this role?

You really don’t have a home department and as a person who likes routine it is a bit odd. I think mission specialists have been looked down upon, but it is actually a great role. I think it should be considered as a “primary” role for characters as you really get to do a lot and have a lot of potential for characters and their roles. It doesn’t lock you really into anything.

Would you please give some examples of how you’ve simmed this role during missions?

You are assigned to a mission and find out what your role will be on the fly. It is fun to sim that part of it as the mission plays out. One mission engineer, one mission navigator, and the next security officer. Considering DeBarres background it is a great fit.

What advice would you give anyone who is considering this particular duty posting for a character?

The advice I always give to new ensigns. Have fun but stay in character.  Develop a ‘flight envelope’ and push it slowly as you grow in your role. Remember you are there to do what is needed. You do not master a job right at the beginning. This is a great role. Make it yours and you will not be disappointed.

Thanks for your time, Lt. JG DeBarres!!
