StarBase 118 Staff
Each month we interview a member of the Academy Training Team for insight on how our training works, and as recognition for all the hard work that goes into training new members each and every week of the year! This month, we’re sitting down with Oddas Aria, a Lieutenant Commander playing on Duronis II Embassy, who has been a highly active member of the team recently. WOLF: Hello LtCmdr. Oddas! Can you tell us a little about yourself for the folks who may not know you? ODDAS: I’m a software developer working for an awesome software contracting firm. I work out of my house in Florida, but my office is in Alaska, so I have a fairly long commute when I need to go visit with co-workers or clients. Fortunately this only happens three or four times a year. I’m married and have four children, a couple of whom share my love of Sci-Fi and not just because I named them after some of my favorite characters. How did you learn about our community, and what motivated you to join us? I came across a post someone had made in a Google+ Star Trek community, sorry I don’t remember who, and followed the link. It looked interesting and I needed and wanted a game to play so I decided to give it a whirl. The Academy experience really helped me figure out what was going on, how the mechanics work, and ultimately commit fully. How long ago did you join Academy Training Team, and what was it like getting started? I’ve been a member for about seven months. The materials for getting started and the staff were helpful. It was nice to see how organized everything was behind the scenes and seriously everyone takes it, all the while taking every effort to make the Cadet successful. It was exciting to get started and I’m glad I did it. I feel like I’ve gotten to know people across the fleet I wouldn’t otherwise have gotten to know and have improved my own simming skills just by participating in so many more scenarios and observing people in different situations. What’s been your favorite part about training so far? I’d say it’s sort of a tossup. When I started out it was the Academy experience which made me ultimately decide to participate in simming so I like being part of a similar experience for other players. Like I said earlier, once I joined I realized participating in so much more simming really helped out my own writing skills, which is very enjoyable. Are you working toward command? I like to keep my options open, but I think I see Oddas in charge of some sort of Engineering ship or installation somewhere, but maybe it gets thrust upon her. It’s happened to her writer enough I know it can work out well. It’s probably a long ways off. What advice would give to those who are coming up through the ranks and headed toward the Training Team? The Training Team is fun and you get to meet interesting people and practice your simming skills. Join the team and have fun. There’s not really any downside to getting started. Thank you so much for your time — we’ll let you get back to training! You can read more about LtCmdr.
