  1. As more and more people on the USS Columbia grow facial hair, ensign @Jona ch'Ranni ponders over the trend. Jona, this was a humorous read and I loved how you managed to express Jona's thoughts so well! ❤️

    ***

((Jona ch'Ranni's Quarters, Deck 20, USS Columbia))

:: Jona entered his quarters and collapsed on the bunk. It had been a long day and he could no longer fight off the sleep that his body so desperately wanted. The room was a mess. Tri-dimensional chess pieces still littered the floor from the shaking of the attacks the Columbia had sustained earlier in the day. Several PADDs had joined the pawns and bishops ignominiously lying there on the carpet but Jona couldn't muster the energy to care at the moment. Perhaps in a few hours.::

    Computer: 0600 hours.

:: Jona's ice blue eyes popped open and he sat upright, almost slamming his forehead into the base of the bunk above him.::

ch'Ranni: Did I really just sleep for 8 hours? It doesn't feel like it.

Computer: Internal sensors indicate that sleep period lasted 7 hours 47 minutes 10 sec...

ch'Ranni: ::dryly:: Thank you, Computer. Most helpful.

:: He rose from the bed and stretched his back and neck muscles. Padding over to the washroom, he stepped on a queen chess piece and cursed softly to himself. He entered the small compartment and blinked his eyes at the bright light in the room. He grabbed up the electronic shaver automatically and looked at himself in the mirror. Fine white stubble had formed at the jawline and around his mouth just as it did every morning. He paused for a moment with the razor inches from his face.::

ch'Ranni: oO Funny. I've never really thought about it. Facial hair isn't all that common of a grooming choice for most Andorians. The captain and first officer both started growing full beards and it completely changes their looks. Very distinguished. Oo

:: Jona thought to himself that it wouldn't be unlikely that others aboard might follow suit. There might even be a whole ship-wide trend toward the look. He hesitated and began to lower the razor.::

ch'Ranni: oO Maybe it will become the standard of the fleet and I'll be seen as the weird one. The one ensign who refused to grow his mustache and beard like a good officer. Ensign Naked-Face. Passed over for promotions, relegated to piloting supply shuttles and workbees for the repair crews. Slowly and utterly forgotten. Oo

:: Jona stood staring at himself in the mirror. Was he really even of an value to his crewmates and the fleet as a whole if he did not conform to expected standards? It would be seen as a distraction. Didn't he owe his very best to Whittaker and Thoran and all the rest to be his very best? And what of the newer crew that arrived from time to time? They needed role models to pattern themselves after. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and Jona knew that he didn't want to be labeled as that weakest link. If that meant forgoing small preferences in grooming choices he was prepared to make those adjustments. For the good of the ship, for the good of the fleet. He stood determinedly before his reflection with a look of seriousness that belied his relative youth.::

:: Slowly a smile crossed his face. ::

    ch'Ranni: Nope.

:: He clicked the razor on and began his morning routine.::

  2. This really was a great season-opener! It was action-packed (which is good for a season opener, but I hope it calms down over the episodes), and story-driven. I love the new Pike (he's kinda like Lorca, but hopefully a "good guy), and I loved Tig too. 😆 I was glad they killed the science officer, he was too snug. The engineer of the trio seems interesting though. I really hoped Pike would keep his yellow and new uniform, but that's a nitpick. At least, I'm glad that they explained the difference in uniforms (at least on-screen) now. One last thing, I really hoped they would turn down the holograms this season, because it just doesn't fit in the TOS-era, I was dissappointed. However, I am really positive about what will happen in season two! 🖖

  3. Gefeliciteerd, makker! Veel plezier op de Montreal, en let je een beetje op die Denobulan? Die wil nog wel eens gekke dingen doen... 😁

(Congratulations, bud! Have fun on the Montreal, and would you mind paying attention to that Denobulan? He tends to do crazy things sometimes... 😁)

  4. It's missing the most challenging (for me ofc): Science! I have researched particles and phenomena for hours for a mission sim to make it all scientifically accurate, only to see other people have simmed it before I finished my own sim. 😅 I have a different kind of respect for all posts of course, but my experience lies in the science department.

  5. I recently started doing research into my favorite ship/class: the Prometheus. It is my long-term goal to captain one, and I've recently picked up doing vector graphics and I'm trying to make deck plans for this beauty. However, I ran into some problems.

The ship is supposed to have 15 (according to SB118 and Star Trek Magazine) or 16 (according to STexpanded; ignoring this) decks. According to our wiki and Memory Beta, the ship is 113 meters high. This immediately causes problems. The ship has the same amount of decks as the Intrepid class, which is only 64 meters high, so in theory the Prometheus should be about as high. The average height of a deck on the Prometheus would be 7.53 meters, which could be two decks on any other ship. So calculating with a standard height of four meters per deck the ship should have about 28 decks.

So I realized the ship either has way more decks or is way less high. I reached that conclusion very quickly using Paint, because all sources state a length of 415 meters. Please compare these two (link to original picture, which is slightly out of the Voyager height proportion)

    image.pngimage.png

The top one is with a height of 64 meters and 15 decks. The bottom one is with a height of 113 meters and 28 decks. Both with a length of 415 meters. If you don't recognize it immediately, the left one depicts the original prometheus waaaay better. So I think the 64 meters should be taken as the height, or a value close to that. Another way of calculating height solely using this picture would be to count pixels. The (original; not scaled by me) picture is 600 pixels wide and 80 high, so using the 415 as a length we can calculate a height of 55 meters. Not sure what to do with this, and I'd like to hear y'all's opinion on this matter.

    Rant over.

  6. Pholin would love to tell the species what the Federation has accomplished, probably getting pride telling someone who has never heard about it. He would probably love to have talked to the woman in First Contact who came aboard the E. Telling her what has changed in three hundred years.

Whether or not he could do it? I don't know.
