1. POUIYEOG REGION — After repelling a Numiri attack on Outpost Unity, the USS Darwin-A have rescued Fleet Captain Renos from the clutches of a traitorous former crewmember. With the USS Darwin (NCC-99312-A) effecting hasty repairs after a tense battle in the defense of Outpost Unity against the Numiri, the Darwin crew was ready to start their search for the missing commanding officer, Flt. Capt. Renos. Retrieving the stranded senior officers that had helped to thwart a terrorist attack by a Numiri agent in disguise, the Darwin rendezvoused with the USS Endeavour, where they received an influx of new officers, including Ensign Christopher Lambert, some much needed material for ongoing repairs, and an exciting tip for their search. A merchant vessel had made contact with the ship believed to have Renos aboard, and the Darwin’s cat and mouse QSD chase was able to be shortened drastically. Upon intercepting the strange ship that departed weeks earlier from Outpost Unity with Renos board, the Darwin was met with a firefight as the ship attempted to flee. The small ship seemed outgunned and overpowered by the larger Horizon class vessel until the Darwin’s shields mysteriously dropped and entered a locked diagnostic mode, leaving the Darwin defenseless. The intercept had happened in a system with degrading binary neutron stars, dumping gamma radiation and gravitic waves throughout the system. Without shields, radiation poisoning was a serious concern, and the effects of the burgeoning black hole precluded the use of transporters and tractor beams to capture the ship and retrieve Renos. “We are sitting in a binary star system that, given time will become a black hole. At the moment it is putting out intense radiation. With no shielding we are being bombarded with it with only Darwin’s hull to protect us. We will need to find a way to protect ourselves more fully or else we will not be in any position to help the captain,” remarked Lieutenant Merrick R’Ven at the time. Without the use of transporters, first officer Lt. Cmdr. Maxwell Traenor ordered a retrieval team to attempt to locate Renos via force, using a shuttle to board the other ship. Led by Lt. Cmdr. Varaan, the team managed to breach the ship after the Darwin pummeled the other ship to the point of shield failure. Meanwhile, on the other ship, the two deviant hunters who had kidnapped Renos and were trying to break nem under psychotectic therapy were at odds over their situation. Iy, the traitor who had been ingratiated nemself to the Darwin crew for the past year, had been responsible for the sabotage on the Darwin that had caused its shields to fail. Zorel, who mistrusted Iy’s true loyalties from the start, accused Iy of purposefully failing in disabling the Darwin to allow Renos to escape. With Zorel threatening to kill Renos rather than allow nem to escape the clutches of the J’naii government, Iy was forced to kill nir fellow deviant hunter to save Renos’s life. Finding the ship sparsely manned, the rescue team discovered an emaciated, tortured, and incoherent Renos next to the corpse of a deviant hunter and fled the J’naii vessel with nem before it was bombarded with a lethal level of gamma radiation. Iy, unknowing of this event but unable to save nir ship from the effects of the radiation and gravitic waves, was doomed as nir ship was drawn into the binary star’s gravity well with no hope of escape. With Renos rescued and nir abductors beyond justice, the Darwin limped home to Outpost Unity with its crew dejected over the state of their commanding officer and the betrayal by one they had called their own. 2. Savan is the only child of Vulcan scientists and originally hails from Vulcan. He had a quiet and uneventful childhood until a series of unfortunate and dramatic events were set in motion following Trellium-D exposure that would eventually end with the death of of his father, the breakdown of his mother, and the ‘emotional’ Vulcan living with a half-human relative in Santa Cruz on Earth. Savan majored in Security, specializing in diplomacy, survival and tactics with a minor in Operations and Communications. Following his graduation from the Academy he was assigned to the Embassy on Duronis II where he continues to serve and was recently promoted to Lieutenant JG. Congratulations to Savan of the Embassy on Duronis II who has been selected as the Featured Bio Winner for July 2016, and Solaris McLaren of the USS Constitution, this round’s featured nominee! As always, you can find out more about the Featured Bio Contest at its wiki page or in its forum. Head there now to learn more about the contest and nominate bios that deserve recognition! 3. We are all used to simming our characters in their Star Trek lives. And, with their own problems and conflicts, they are the protagonists of our stories, they uphold (to their own extent) the values of the Federation and generally win, at least in the end. But simming occasionally offers the unique opportunity of writing an antagonist, the bad guy our characters fight against. Not every mission has one, we might be just fighting nature, or internal conflict, for example. But, on those missions that have an opponent, someone has to sim them. If you have, you know how fun and amazing it can be. If you haven’t, consider it and contact your captain, because it is a fascinating opportunity. But, when we sim them, there are lots of styles and types of enemies our characters can face. So here is our question, what is your favourite kind of enemies? Maybe so alien we can’t understand their motives? Maybe ruthless and cold, so far from the most human parts of our own characters we can’t relate? Or maybe with their own interests, loyal to their own faction, a good agent just in a different side? Or approachable, with their own problems and fears, relatable, where we could see ourselves doing the same things in their same situation? Each one has their own perks and is fun to sim in their own manner. But what is your favourite? Come and tell us on the forums! This is a new post in our category Simming Questions. Here we will be asking questions about our community, our characters and our writing, and how you interact with it all. 4. Each month, the Academy staff compiles the statistics about our recruiting and training for the fleet’s informational purposes. Let’s take a look at how we did in June. This first graph shows the number of applications we received each month this year. As you can see, the fleet received nine new applications in the month of June which is slight increase from the previous month. This increase ties June with March for the third highest number of applications in a month so far this year. The following chart shows how members found us, according to their application: This final graph shows how many people graduated from the Academy during the month of June. While we had nine new applications only seven graduated during June. One of our June graduates applied to the fleet in May and two of our June applicants started training late in the month and that training will not be completed until early July. New recruits are the lifeblood of our community. When our application rate slows, it makes it hard to keep our ships fully crewed, not to mention impossible to grow. So if you’d like to help us recruit more members and grow our fleet, you can join the Publicity Team using this form. 5. DEEP SPACE 285 — Now freed from a dream world, the crew of the USS Doyle have taken to Deep Space 285 for much needed morale restoration There is still some mystery surrounding what happened on the USS Doyle that caused all of its crew to go to sleep. Reports have come in from various sources that during the time that the Doyle was out of communication, they were all engaged in a rather intense dream about the Old West era on Earth. “It was strange,” said Karolina Cranford of the Starfleet Marines, who reported that people went missing in the dream. “I vaguely remember in one part of the dream Commander Cody being Sheriff, but I clearly remember reporting to Sheriff Danara.” “But it was just a dream,” she added. However, not everyone was as forthcoming about their experience. “If you are looking for what happened on our latest mission, then you will have to talk to Starfleet Command,” said Lieutenant Commander Alexander Bishop. “I have something more important to do.” “I guess you could say we’ve been living the dream,” joked Ensign Horatio Caine. Yet not all was harmless in the dream. The crew of the Doyle is currently mourning the loss of one of their own. Colonel Nugra, the Gorn CO of the Doyle’s Marine Contingent sacrificed himself to orchestrate the crew’s safe exit from the overpowering dream world. Nugra’s death is being mourned the only way his friends see fit and is being hosted on DS285 to allow the crew of the Doyle some space while those from all over the Federation come and pay their respects. Since the crew’s return from the dream, there have been a few new faces, but one stood out more than most, a human male who calls himself John Nugra. This investigative reporter was unable to find out any information on the man other than he returned with the Doyle and was repeatedly blocked by JAG, but we won’t stop until we find out his connection with what happened on the ship the he arrived on. Meanwhile, answers regarding what happened at the disastrous ball on Deep Space 285 have finally come to light. As was reported earlier, one of the patrons on the ball was suspected of drugging another officer. During the course of the interrogation, the suspect died. His interrogator Lieutenant Commander Lan Riel was taken into custody and at the request of Captain Selene Faranfey, held on the Doyle during the investigation. Last we heard there were charges pending regarding misuse of telepathy, manslaughter, and conduct unbecoming. There was talk from our source in JAG that they were looking at additional charges, including murder. Through the course of their investigation, while the Doyle was out on their latest mission, JAG reviewed the case, examined the evidence and spoke to character witnesses for the officer. At the end of the day, the death was ruled in self-defense. Although there are some questions as to why, when released, the officer had been demoted to Lieutenant JG. We’ll keep you updated with what we uncover as to the cause of this demotion. The post Doyle crew in recovery as most wake from nightmare appeared first on UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. 6. June, the start of summer break for those who are students, or are related to students. This break frequently causes a shift in our sim counts from the school year to the summer. Many times we see an increase in simming activity, as people are no longer busy with school related activities. However, occasionally, as happened this year, we see a drop probably caused by the beginning of summer vacations, and shifting personnel from those who needed to take school related LOA and those taking a summer related one. This year, we went from the average per ship of 220 sims in May, to a 208 average for June. (In the chart below, red represents 2016 while blue represents 2015.) While the overall fleet average dropped by 12 sims per month, our individual ships show a more varied range. In June the steepest climb was Starbase 118 Ops, with a 44 increase from last month, leaving them at 256. Our deepest drop was the Doyle, whose total from last month was 285, while fell 56 sims putting them at 202. Another sharp drop was the Invicta, which went from 229 in May to 188 in June. Other ships stayed closer to their May numbers during June. My prediction in May was for a climb in June, but it with things steadying through the end of June, hopefully we’ll see that climb in July. 8. STARBASE 118 — Following continued efforts to rid the Trinity Sector of a dangerous criminal element, the senior staff of Starbase 118 took a well-earned shore leave. For the last several months, the senior staff of Starbase 118’s famed Operations Tower have been attempting to combat a rise in criminal elements within the station and its surrounding space, chiefly a cartel known as the Jenatris Confederation and a wanted fugitive by the name of Chennel. Last month these efforts resulted in the death of Marine Captain Raymond Hughes who gave his life so that Chennel’s associates, the Orion Oma-Saan and a Pelian by the name of Janker, could be brought to justice. Following the two’s capture and subsequent transfer into Federation custody, life aboard the station has slowly returned to normal. In a stunning display of unity, the station’s Starfleet crew came together to mourn the loss of their fallen comrade in a moving service led by the station’s Marine CO Major Tatash. The following evening took a different tone when the senior staff attended the housewarming party of the station’s CAG Lieutenant Antero Flynn, who has moved into a beachfront house on the Little Risa island in the station’s Commercial Sector. The station also played host to Captain Jalana Rajel, who surprised station CO Sal Taybrim with a promotion to the rank of Captain. “Captain Taybrim’s promotion is well earned, overdue and sends a clear message to the criminal elements in local space that Starfleet is taking the threat they posed very seriously,” said station press liaison AJ Craig. “We have routed the station of the Jenatris Confederation’s influence, and we will continue to come down hard on them wherever they appear.” When asked whether the Operations Tower had any leads on where the fugitive Chennel is, Craig simply replied with “no comment.” The post Starbase 118 Operations on leave following dangerous mission appeared first on UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. 11. ADOVA — After a call for assistance from a relatively unknown civilization, the USS Invicta is on route to Adova to assist with cleansing the planet from dangerous weapons used for mass genocide. Located on a planet tucked away within the Menthar Corridor, the Adovan people contacted Starfleet and the Federation to request assistance in removing dangerous weapons used against a racial minority approximately 300 years ago. Upon arrival, Invicta’s commanding officer Captain Washington dispatched three teams to assist. With a small team, Fleet Captain Aron Kells would speak directly with the world’s leader, Arc Nen Mur Diiv. First officer Lt. Cmdr. Tristam Core was dispatched with a team of four others to convene with the planet’s science and medical division to address the long-standing effects of the weapon. Finally, Lt. Cmdr. Pandora lead a small team to a decommissioned weapons center to find a way to disable and dispose of the automated drones themselves that delivered the weapon: a virus that caused the genocide. With Starfleet’s contact with the Adovan homeworld minimal since first contact, the crew was shocked to learn that the racial minority affected by the weaponry some 300 years ago were that of those with telepathic or empathic abilities. Many of the Invicta’s senior staff are telepaths, adding concerns for the crew’s safety on the planet. “The crew’s health should be a primary concern. If the virus is released, it’s not a matter of ‘if’ they’re affected, it’s ‘when’,” said Doctor Pouge Romey in response to questions back on Astrofori One. Further rumors among the crew indicate that the Arc herself may be telepathic, providing a personal motivation behind the Adovan call for assistance. 12. The Graphics Contest was recently retired after more than a year of amazing graphical creations. There are some fond memories and incredible artwork over the time-period it ran, and we’d like to take a look back and recognize what this contest brought to the group. The Starbase 118 Graphics Contest started in fall of 2014 as a way to recognize the amazingly talented artists in our community. There were eight total rounds, covering everything from holiday themes to designing the Space Station Astrofori 1. Over twenty artists participated, and they created over 50 wonderful entries for us to marvel over. The Graphics Contest was run, and judged by, Captain Jalana Rajel, commanding officer of the USS Constitution-B and facilitator of the StarBase 118 Image Collective. Captain Rajel brought this creative contest to life and gave us many months of great pictures that made us think, smile and brought StarBase 118 to life. The contest started out with categories for people and world-building, but as it grew many of the entries spanned both categories. So later contests had one general theme for contestants to fulfill. Some of the highlights of the contest include: A hilarious gallery of Christmas entries from 2014, including winners Fleet Captain Cascadia Rainier and Lt. Commander Tyler Kelly The gorgeous Spring 2015 gallery, including Lt. Commander Talia Kaji’s peek into her favorite Gorn’s downtime and Lt. Commander Kellly’s stunning comic book cover art showing his previous commanding officers. Summer 2015’s uplifting gallery, including winner Lt. Antero’s Flynn’s inspirational “Legacy of the Federation” retro poster Lt. Commander Rune Jolara’s winning entry for Halloween 2015: Monster Trek. A chilling autumn 2015 gallery showing artist’s depictions of fear, featuring winner Lt. Commander Aiyana Sevo’s haunting computer generated artwork. And a Jolly Holiday 2015 gallery showing off winner Admiral Toni Turner’s lovely ornament styled artwork. You can spot graphics contest winners and runners up by the badges they wear on their forum signatures or their wiki profiles. Take a moment to walk down memory lane and appreciate some of the great artwork done by our members, and keep an eye out for what incredible contests and showcases we have in store in the future. These sims below were chosen by a panel of judges (one from each ship) from the sims submitted in Rounds 7-13 of the contest. TO START, please read these sims: Round 7: Captain Shelther Faranster, “Lost Context“ Round 8: Cpt Jalana Rajel, “Fear the Reaper“ Round 9: Dr Tarna & Iria, “The pain of rejection“ Round 10: Lt Commander Falcon/Rhino the hamster, “The New Smell“ Round 11: Doctor Saveron, “There, but for the vagaries of chance, go I“ Round 12: 302nd Tactical Fighter Wing, “New Assignment“ Round 12: LtCdr Sinda Essen & LtJG Solaris McLaren, “New Experiences“ NEXT, vote for the sim you like the most. Click here to go to the poll now. It should be the sim that’s the best written, with strong characterization, and evocative or descriptive scene-setting. DON’T vote for a sim just because you serve on the same crew as the person who wrote it. Any crew that “stuffs the ballot” (by having everyone on the crew vote for the same sim to ensure that it wins this poll) will be eliminated from the contest and shamed by the rest of the community as terrible, terrible cheaters. That would be awful. Good luck to the nominees! The post Vote now in the Top Sims Contest Runoff Round 2 appeared first on UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. View the full article
17. Welcome to the final day of our 20th annual awards ceremony! After celebrating individual achievement across the fleet for the past week, we finish the ceremony with a celebration of why we’re all here: the stories we tell together. The 20th annual awards ceremony marks the beginning of a new award presentation: the Featured Missions of the Fleet. Just as the Featured Bio Contest highlights the best character pages from our wiki, the Featured Missions of the Fleet showcases the best missions as chosen by you and your fellow shipmates. Each ship’s crew voted among the past missions of 2015 and the first half of 2016 to choose the mission to be featured from their ship. Then, players nominated sims from the mission to be selected as the Featured Sim of those missions, with the sim receiving the most “likes” in the forum presented with an excerpt for the ceremony. Thank you to all crews who voted and nominated during the process. And now, UFOP: StarBase 118 proudly presents your selections… Head to the forums now to see which missions and sims were chosen to be featured! 18. Welcome to day five of our 20th annual awards ceremony! So far this week we’ve announced the winners of the Staff Awards, Length of Service Awards, Special Awards, and Duty Post Awards. Now we’re delighted to share the General (Ship) Awards, which have been presented by each captain to their crew. This is your chance to see how each of the other ships did and see who picked up what award. This is another category that has seen new awards added including: The Laudean Commendation, awarded for achievements in exploration with new lifeforms. The recipient will have shown great creativity in many facets of species creation or expansion, including physiological, psychological, cultural, social, and more, and their creativity will inspire their fellow simmers. It can cover many aspects of species development, but should primarily be based in IC simming. The Khan Award recognizes a simmer who thoughtfully develops a three-dimensional villain over the course of a mission or more. The Q Award is given for continually surprising their crew with unexpected, devious plot twists throughout the year, replacing the Kalendra Award from the Special Awards category. The winners this year, as in 2015, were chosen by the fleet’s commanding officers (or in cases where the commanding officer was also nominated, the first officer was called in to decide) from the nominations made by you! Head to the forums now to see who won each of the General Awards from each ship across the fleet, and be sure to congratulate the winners! 19. While surveying a solar system, your ship encounters an adrift object. Closer scans reveal it to be alive, and as a captain, you decide to bring it onboard. It happens to be an intelligent humanoid, although at first she seems crazy and looks at you with maddened eyes. She slowly regains her composure and explains her story. She was a scientist who experimented until she found a way to make herself immortal. Her body does not need food or water or any other resource, and regenerates too fast for it to be destroyed. She is even willing to demonstrate, if you don’t believe her. The problem is, those experiments required the sacrifice of a whole planet with its entire population. She made that sacrifice, and became immortal, but she was also condemned as a criminal. Unable to execute her, or to imprison her indefinitely, their society left her, with nothing but a set of clothes, in a stable orbit around a star on an uninhabited system, virtually forever. She can’t say, but by your crew’s calculations, she has been there for near 3,000 years. Her civilization has since vanished, and there is no one left to decide over her sentence. She asks you to either free her or give her the means to undo her own experiment and end her suffering, but not prolong her penalty. Would you? What would you do? Tell us in the forums! This is a new edition of our category Morals of Trek, where you are in the shoes of a Starfleet captain facing a dilemma any of our favourite characters could have faced in Star Trek. If your crew has faced any such dilemmas and you want to see it featured in a Poll of the Week, let us know! 20. Welcome to day four of our 20th annual awards ceremony! So far this week we’ve announced the winners of the Length of Service Awards, Special Awards, and Duty Post Awards. And now we’re very excited to present the Staff Awards, which are only for those members who have achieved the rank of commander or higher. These awards recognize the hard work of our staff, who do the behind-the-scenes work required to keep the engine of our community running, and smoothly at that! They help foster the fun simming environment we all enjoy. This year we have one new awards to add to our list: The T’Pau Cluster of Distinction, which is presented for long-term achievement in leading the Training Team. In previous years, the Shuvalis Diamond of Recognition recognised long-term commitment and achievement in the Training or Publicity teams, but since both teams are so important we decided they each needed their own award. We’re also very happy to announce that the first Kathryn Janeway Award in six years will be presented to a very worthy recipient! This award recognises those commanding officers who have made a great impact on their crew and left an indelible legacy on our community history – they may have retired and taken a break but they will not be forgotten. The winners this year, as in 2015, were chosen by a panel of all the fleet’s first officers, from the nominations made by you! Find out who won each of the nine staff awards by heading to the forums, where you can read about and congratulate our talented award recipients. 23. MENTHAR CORRIDOR — While the official search has ended, a last ditch effort to find the USS Gorkon has begun. After vanishing without a trace, Starfleet has officially called off the search for the USS Gorkon, a Sovereign class starship that had been assigned to patrol the Menthar Corridor. Yet according to rumor, all hope is not lost in finding the Gorkon. Reports picked up from the Astrofori One space station suggest that an unofficial search may in fact be taking place. In a personal log intercepted from Chris Harrington, formerly of the USS Yarahla, Harrington states, “I and a group of interested parties are determined to look for the missing ship, regardless of the fact that ‘lost with all hands’ means ‘We can’t find them.’” Lieutenant Commander Eerie’s Personal Log, Stardate 239305.30 The past month here in the alternative universe has been quite interesting and keeping me very busy. The best part of it, however, is that of no new updates from Starfleet Command via security matters. However, there will be a lot to read if and when we get back to our Federation space. We have had at least one member of the Triumphant’s crew formally join the Gorkon’s. Probably the last person I would have expected, but there are certainly some differences in personality. There was some initial concerns with getting quarters for the new arrivals, but it is pretty much taken care of. We are still looking for a way to repair the ship and return to our “home” universe. It is still odd to see some duplicates about the ship. This has been my main concern with security matters as who and who doesn’t have security clearances. I have been maintaining an informally increased security presence on the ship. I think this prudent, being in Dominion space and with the new arrivals board. Roo, my cat has seemed to take the chances in stride. I don’t even think she noticed until Ensign DeBarres, who watches the cat for me on occasion, came with her duplicate from this universe to my quarters to feed the cat, due to my working a double shift. I do need to spend more time with the cat. Perhaps I will take her to the office more often. Tactically I have learned a lot with the run ins with the Dominion and Cardassian forces. Hopefully, at some point I will get to publish my findings. One more report for Starfleet to send out to everyone. 24. Welcome to day two of our 20th annual Awards Ceremony! Yesterday, we announced the winners of the Duty Post awards, where 10 simming superstars were recognised for the extraordinary talent they have in simming their duty posts. Today we are recognising specific aspects of simming or OOC work with the Special awards. Only the very best are chosen so they are highly coveted awards that every player has a chance to be considered for by getting involved and giving it their best. There are two new Special awards introduced this year: The Luminary Award: For those who show great promise in their future endeavours in UFOP: Starbase 118 RPG. Given to members holding the rank of Ensign, Lieutenant Junior Grade, or Lieutenant. This is a counterpart to the Rising Star award, which is only for Lieutenant Commander ranked players, and higher. Quark’s Bar: Awarded to members who are regularly active on the forums and have been supportive and involved in conversations enhancing the overall forum experience. Just like with the Duty Post awards, only one of each Special award is given a year, with one notable exception: The Xalor Clan Xifilis award is given to any player who has overcome any sort of disadvantage while simming. We don’t compare and weigh one person’s struggles against another but rather award this to all eligible and deserving candidates who are nominated for it. Find out who won each of the eight special awards presented to very worthy players by heading to the forums, where you can read about and congratulate our talented award recipients. 25. Welcome to our first June ceremony, marking our 20th anniversary of this awards ceremony tradition. While our group was founded in 1994, our first ceremony was held in 1996, bringing together the whole fleet for an In Character celebration. Since then, we’ve seen the addition of dozens of new awards, a transition to Out Of Character presentations, and in this latest change, a move from the traditional December presentation to June, to coincide with the yearly anniversary of our founding. It’s time to turn your heads to the red carpet as we begin this week-long event, where we’ll present to the fleet five categories of awards: Duty Post: Honoring the best simmer from each duty post Special: Honoring specific aspects of simming or OOC work Length of Service: Honoring members who have been with us for a year, all the way up to 10 years and more Staff: Honoring the work of our fleet’s staff members Contest and General: Honoring the members who’ve won contests throughout the year, as well as those who won this year’s General, or ship-based awards We have 10 simming superstars in the Duty Post category to get us started in style. Each award focuses on a different department, from the major ones such as medical, operations or engineering to the more unique, like diplomacy, intel or marines. Even civilians have a chance to be recognised for the valuable contributions that can be made to our stories by those who prefer the path less worn. Each of these awards recognises a player for excellence in simming their duty post. Since only one award per duty post is given each year, only the very best are chosen and they are highly coveted awards. You’ll see from our spread of winners – who range in rank from Ensign to Captain – that every player has a chance to be considered for one of these by consistently simming to the best of their ability and striving to improve their craft. Find out who this year’s duty post super stars are by heading to the forums, where you can read about and congratulate our talented award recipients.
