Toni Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 "Fragments" Posted for Lt Jg Thomas Gregory"My name is Zackarias. In two hundred and forty one years I havelived on countless worlds, in countless cultures and one thing I'vediscovered is it's all simply the same. I travel through matter...through space... through the ludicrous notion of linear and nonlinear time and I come upon the same conclusions to the sameequations. It's been a grueling experience, my life. I have workedthe past thirty one years on my last project. It is a complex set ofequations to create a temporal bomb with the destructive capability toend the universe. If upon completion there is still something outthere I hope my last accomplishment provides them with a glimmer ofthe fragility of existence."The video was paused and up walked the Admiral. "This is ZackariasMiyaxerses, he's an Augment, a smart and dangerous [...]."Commander Bacchus was sitting in a chair against the side of theconference room to the left. He crossed his right leg and placed it onhis left then began. "He's from the 24th century, born on Earth butthat's all we know. Our profile shows him to be over two hundredyears. He's threatened to destroy the universe, it's our department’sjob to catch him before he makes good on his threat."The Admiral walked back over to the screen and resumed the video."I realize there are certain 'safeguards' in place that will attemptto restrict my actions. I would only request that you send someone whocan get the job done. I have little time to waste on the disposing ofAmateurs. Make no mistake I will be aware of anything you do no matter'when' you decide to do it."The video was paused once more and the Admiral ordered the originallighting resumed. He walked to the conference table and sat in thechair at the head. "After requesting authorization we were grantedpermission to operate a 'subdue and restrict' operation. Our target isthe Augment Scientist."Commander Bacchus brought the PADD in front of him up and tossed it onthe table. "This mission is singular; we've gotten the codes from thehighest levels of the brass upstairs. No other group will be involvedin this highly delicate operation. You all have your information andwe will be running simulation drills over the next three weeks.Dismissed!"The three other officers stood quickly and filed orderly out of theconference room. The Commander rubbed his temples and sat back in hischair. "We're making a mistake by sending Sam. He's gone through toomuch already... he's liable too-""Sam is our best officer and has a flawless track record. He is thebest choice for this assignment." interrupted the Admiral. There was aclearly discernable amount of tension between the two men. This issuewas controversial and usually ended with inconclusive but very heatedphilosophical debate."He's not well, all you have to do is talk to the man and you see it!You see it in his eyes!" Bacchus continued."You speak of him like that again I will hold you up on charges ofinsubordination. Sam was given a full evaluation - like he's givenduring every debriefing - and the evaluations say-" Debates tended tooften conclude at this impasse."The evaluations are WRONG." The Commander stood and the Admiralgrabbed his arm standing as well."You are over the line Bacchus! You want to make trouble for adecorated operative? You want to question policy? You want to make aphilosophical point? Do it in writing! Now get out of my sight." TheAdmirals hand left the Commanders shoulder. He turned and looked outthe window as Bacchus walked out without taking a breath.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Case File 21934A1 - Subject Codename "***" - playback from firstentry." The video log of events began as the screen showed an oldVictorian house. The video had a perfect view of the front porch. Forover 3 hours Sam watched the recording in disbelief. Every time hewent back over the events of the past hour he sat dumbfounded. "It'snot true. I don't believe it." Sam spun around in his chair and puthis face in his hands. His head dropped as his last shreds of clarityvanished and the man began to weep in a horrified confusion.Several feet away from Sam lay the body of Commander Bacchus. He layseated on the floor his back slumped against the wall of the office. His head hung forward. His eyes were open and stared lifelessly at theground. For several minutes nothing happened.------------------------------------------------------------------------------"I don't know what you're talking about!" Sam yelled at Bacchus."I'm talking Sam! About the video! We've got the proof! It's beingpassed along the chain of command as we speak; you've got to listen tome! Let me help you Sam!" Bacchus approached Sam with his hands up."Stay back! Don't come any closer, you hear?""Bacchus looked down and closed his eyes for a moment and then stoppedin the middle of the room. "You want to see the proof Sam? Do you wantto understand why I need to help you? It's right there on thecomputer. I can show you-" Bacchus moved towards the computer. Sam wasshaking and his eyes kept going from the screen to the door."-I said that's far enough!" and Sam lunged at Bacchus. Bacchus wasn'ttaken completely by surprise and was able to back up before Samgrabbed him. From the corner of his eye he saw the computer signal theprogram could begin playback. He couldn't wait any longer and so heyelled "computer begin-"Sam grabbed the letter opener from the desk and tackled him into thewall. He felt the opener break skin and held his arm across theCommanders chest. The security logged video of a horrific sight. Samstumbled backwards letting go off Bacchus who fell back into the wall, slumping down until he was seated bleeding out on the floor of theoffice. Sam stumbled as he stepped backward and landed in the chair. It spun around as he grabbed the console. The screen read "Case File 21934A1 - Subject Codename "***" - playbackfrom first entry."------------------------------------------------------------------------------Sam closed the front door of the car he procured. Since "Zackarias"had been operating a double life he was able to provide methods oftransportation that offered the most stimuli. Sam leaned against thecar and closed his eyes for a moment. He looked up at the second sun.The planet moved around at such an odd angle. Around 1300 hours theafternoon began to fade into evening but then a strange second mid daybegan and lasted for several hours before the planets spin causes thesecond sun to set quickly. Sam looked back down at the PADD he held.It didn't look familiar, just another assignment.Sam starting bringing up the files and the door to the shack opened.Bacchus stormed out quickly towards Sam. When we got about two metersfrom Sam he stopped and looked around."I'm glad you reported back. Come inside." Bacchus was trying to hidesomething from Sam. His voice was highly trained but Sam was good atlooking for the telltale signs that he's being lied to. For as long ashe could remember he made a living by knowing a deception. He doubletapped on the Padd and put it back in his case. He held the case up infront of him and as he looked directly at Bacchus he snapped the caseshut."I came as soon as I got your message." Sam said with a neutralexpression as he walked past the Commander inside. The Commanderturned and walked bewildered after him. The inside connected to acomplex where Investigations was operating a small research andcontrol station. They eventually entered a small office with acomputer console in the center. The console had a chair on wheelsfacing it."I'm afraid a serious error has been committed and a terrible burdeninflicted upon you Sam. We've kept you in the field too long, too manymissions. It's starting to affect your memory, your personality andyour life. For your mental wellbeing I'm pulling you from thisassignment." Bacchus looked so sincere standing there in front of him.Sam knew the best poker faces and could spot the most unconsciousflinches. The Commander didn't give him any signal so Sam paced for amoment."You're good Commander, one of the best. I almost believed you there, but we both know I have a job to complete." Sam stopped pacing andstood facing him."You're job is over, you don't even know what you're doing do you?"The Commander looked Sam hard in the eye."My duty…""You're losing perspective Sam!""I've got to take you in Zackarias. The Admiral informed me of yourplans and I'm afraid you are out of time.""Zackarias? Think hard Sam, about what you did to the Admiral.""We spoke at the rendezvous point.""Madison St?""You aren't supposed to know that information.""If I'm such an excellent mad scientist then why wouldn't I Sam?""The Admiral said you'd try to confuse me. But I know who you are!""The Admiral wasn't even there Sam! You want to know what happened. Ifound the Admiral. He was dead, laying face on the ground in an oldhouse on Madison St. You killed him Sam. You had an argument and youkilled him.""You're trying to confuse me! Stop talking and stay back."The Commander went over to the computer and put his hand on thescreen. "It's right here Sam, you just have to watch. The video ofyou! You walked out of Madison St by yourself; there was no one withyou!""I don't know what you're talking about!" Sam yelled at Bacchus."I'm talking Sam! About the video! We've got the proof! It's beingpassed along the chain of command as we speak; you've got to listen tome! Let me help you Sam!" Bacchus approached Sam with his hands up.----------------------------------------------------------------------------Sam spoke quietly into his PADD as he sat in front of Zackarias."My name is Sam. I work for Temporal Investigations. If we've met,we've likely met before.""For as long as I remember I've tracked down dangerous threats andneutralized them for the Greater Good…""My latest assignment is Zackarias. This report will illustrate thenewfound facts of the case and will serve as a reminder of the courseI will follow to the end. It seems that Commander Bacchus is Zackariasand will be the next target to be neutralized. I've come around to theidea that something encompassing like 'time' should not be permittedto be 'policed'. Therefore I have decided of my own free will to carryout a complete sterilization of what many term 'the universe'."Sam looked at the clock on the wall. It read 0200. He set the PADD 20minutes ahead and placed it in his silver case. He grabbed his phaserand case.Sam stood up and vaporized the remains of the deceased ZackariasMiyaxerses. He tugged on his shirt and walked to the door. He exitedthe small bunker and walked to the first mode of transportation hecould find. It would be mid day soon. Sam stopped at the first car andgot inside. Sam drove for almost 20 minutes before he arrived atCommander Bacchus's staging area.Sam closed the front door of the car he procured. Sam looked back down at the PADD he held.It didn't look familiar, just another assignment.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------As Sam finished his shower he heard a knock on the door. He didn'tgive it a second though until he was fully toweled and dressed. Hewalked out of the bathroom to find his door wide open. He stopped andstarred out the open door for a long moment before looking down to thefile. It contained information on the work of one ZackariasMiyaxerses. The work was brilliant, such beautiful exquisite equationson every field of science. Sam became wrapped up in the file andeverything he had been doing before faded from his mind. He was onlydisturbed from this trance when a voice broke into his mind."Sam, I see you got the dossier I left you…" said his father 'TheAdmiral'. "He's a dangerous man Sam; our boys over in statisticsestimate an 80 percent chance he knows we're after him.""He's not dangerous Dad, he's brilliant." was Sam's reply. His voicesounded strange and alarmed the Admiral."Sam are you feeling ok? Do you know who I am?" The Admiral movedcloser to him and put his hand on Sam's shoulder.Sam took the Admirals hand and brought it down to the file using it toflip the page. "I think he might be on to something here."The Admirals face had a worried look "He's trying to destroy the universe son.""No he's not Dad. He's creating a work of art.""Sam I think we should have your head examined. This man is no artist.Unless you count 'Con-artist'.""What are you saying?""You obviously didn't read the entire dossier." The Admiral flipped tothe second half of the file which contained information on the variousmethods Zackarias used in his crimes of 'temporal extortion'. TheAdmiral watched the colour drain from Sam's face. Sam turned to TheAdmiral and frowned."He's a liar? I have to kill him so I can finish his work. I have tokill you so you won’t come after me. I have to kill Bacchus so no onewill know."The Admirals face went red and Sam grabbed a cleverly hidden phaserand fired into the Admirals chest. He dropped quickly and was still.Sam looked around and felt confused. He saw the man on the floor butdidn't know who he was. He scrambled for anything that was familiarand came upon the file."Zackarias Miyaxerses" Sam read aloud from the file. He walked out ofMadison St - being captured on a surveillance device Bacchus had placedon his 'temporary residence' - reading from the file and eventuallyarrived at the address listed. He looked around and had a look of rageon his face. He finished the file and knew this con man had to betaken down. Then he could become a true artist."I could destroy the universe." Sam shook his head and looked aroundhim. Things seemed foggy but he quickly grabbed his phaser and raninside the undefended bunker. He came upon a wrinkled old man once heentered the communications section and tackled him to the ground. Hepummeled the old man and rage ran through his hands. He screamed athim as he shook the old man to death hitting the skull against thebunker floor.Sam rolled off of Zackarias shaking and convulsing. He took a longtime to get off the floor. He may have had the equivalent of a'temporal shock' and he had trouble moving his left arm. Eventuallythe feeling came back, eventually his mind cleared and he had someclarity once again. What would he say about all this if someone foundhim? He wasn't even sure who he was. He paced for a while not having aclue what was really going on around him. Eventually fragments ofmemory surfaced. He reached and picked up the file. Setting it down onthe table nearby he started at the beginning.Sam spoke quietly into his PADD as he sat in front of Zackarias."My name is Sam. I work for Temporal Investigations. If we've met,we've likely met before."
