Lt. Commander Dekas - Not food poisoning. NOT FOOD POISONING!

Recommended Posts

Reading this sim just made me smile. I'm only just getting to know Dekas but I find him so charming and personable! I can't wait to see where this goes @Dekas

((Temporary Quarters, Residential Ring, Deep Space 9))

((The next morning))

There were vivid dreams, something he couldn’t quite recall, all he knew was that it stressed him out enough to wake up. This was a slightly better situation to the tossing and turning, and inability to regulate body temperature, but only by a small margin. For a few minutes, he tried to just go back to sleep, and couldn’t manage it. Too much headache, too much tension. So he forced himself to sit up with an exhausted groan.

oO Ugh, what year is it? Oo

He barely thought beyond that as he continued to force himself from the nest he’d made on the floor, ignoring the remnant dizziness that came with it.

He gave the egg next to him a gentle pat and made his way to the replicator without a second thought about it. Breakfast foods. Easy. Simple. Normal. Except for the fact that when the smell hit him, he felt absolutely ravenous. He didn’t care that pancakes generally required a fork, he did not have time for that. He needed to eat immediately. It was replicated and likely not nearly as good as something made by hand, and yet he consumed it as though it were the best thing in the world, and with about as much grace and decorum as a starving animal.

He wasn’t proud of the behavior, but he’d had weirder mornings, and it at least gave him enough energy to drag himself through getting ready for the day, a shower, getting dressed, even though every part of him just wanted to do the opposite.

All considered, he decided to lie back down after the fact and he sincerely hoped no one pulled a Dekas and had the audacity to try to contact him earlier than noon.

He had business with the consequence of his actions, after all.

Dekas: ::softly to the egg:: Aww.

For the first time all morning, he almost smiled as he tucked it under his wing and against the side of him to keep it warm. He was basically content that his egg was safe despite how tired he otherwise felt. He let his eyes drift shut as he cozied down again.

And 3…

2…

1…

His eyes suddenly snapped back open and he lifted his wing to check that he wasn’t going insane.

Dekas: Ahh!!

He tucked it back under his wing where he could not see it. Those vivid dreams were starting to feel less like dreams all of a sudden. Denial was a hell of a drug.

oO Not food poisoning. NOT FOOD POISONING. What do I do? What do I do?! Oo

The mildly broody part of him had no interest in taking it to the sickbay to check if he and the egg were okay. There were too many people, that was dangerous. And it was his… situation. It was not theirs. He didn’t want to act with irritability toward people who were just trying to help.

There was also some wild embarrassment about the whole thing. It wasn’t like he could just walk over there and say “Hey I’m pretty sure I laid an egg last night. Help me?”

The rumors. The gossip. Oh, he might die.

Except he had to tell someone. He had to tell a few someones, not the least of which was the other father who lived back planetside on Aurelia. The calls back home could wait a few hours. He could even get away with a few days if need be. But it would be unfair to himself and to the egg to wait longer than the end of the day at the latest to mention this and make sure all was well.

He looked back under his wing.

Dekas: Would it be weird to ask Beck to make a house call, do you think?

The egg, understandably, said nothing.

And that was probably for the best, he didn’t want to make a house call anyway. He didn’t want to inconvenience Beck by calling him over. Didn’t want to take away from his shore leave. Definitely didn’t want to admit to the overwhelming terror of feeling more than a little out of his depth right now. Not to someone who he wasn’t sure where they stood yet. He knew he needed to trust him eventually and by the end of the day he planned to. He just couldn’t handle it yet.

He didn’t want to tell anyone. But he needed someone to talk to first. Make every subsequent conversation a little easier to approach. He needed a person he could trust.

And somehow that was a very easy choice. Dekas took a deep breath and clicked his combadge.

Dekas: Dekas to Luxa. This is going to sound weird, but I’m in a situation that is hard to explain over comms, and I’m too anxious to leave my current quarters. I’m technically fine. Take your time if you’re busy. I just. I severely need a friend right now. Are you free?

Lorana: Response

Dekas: Marvelous. I’ll, ah… explain when you get here. But I do imagine it will be pretty obvious. And you can just come in, I’ll make sure to leave the door unlocked.

Lorana: Response

He gave her the exact room on the station, and waited. It felt like the longest wait he’d ever had to sit through. The longer it went on the more he felt panicked that this was pretty personal for people who didn’t hang out too often. Were they even on that level of friendship yet? By his standards, yes. But what about her point of view? How weird was this?

He startled at the sound of the door.

Dekas: Good to see you. ::a pause:: So, you are sort of the guardian of the Tholian child, Tetra, if I remember correctly, yes?

That was not what he’d planned to start with, but it was too late now.

Lorana: Response

Dekas: Perfect. And how do you think she would feel about having a birdy cousin of sorts?

Lorana: Response

He laughed nervously and carefully moved the egg into view.

Dekas: I don’t know what to do. I probably need to have some doctor stop in here, but I can’t get myself to make the call because it’s embarrassing. And I keep thinking how I’m supposed to inform the Captain that I’m… eggspecting. ::On the verge of tears:: It’s not like I can just show up in sunglasses with the egg in a babybjorn.

Lorana: Response
