Popular Post Doz Finch Posted March 14, 2023 Popular Post Posted March 14, 2023 This is such a thrill to read! I love the way @Ayiana Sevo writes dialogue. In this scene especially it's intermingled with bits of narration that keeps you on your toes, pumped for what's to come (hopefully two trains smashing into one another!) - special mention to Pira, Stoyer and Neathler as well for this exciting Skarbek away team story. For anyone unsure, the Gorkon is currently in "Skarbek" mode, which means that our characters are... slightly (or very) different, and members of the passionate Maquis. Quote (( Subway Power Substation in Subway, Witherington - Indre III )) Sevo: I have several options on the menu you can choose from tonight, ma’am. I can shut off power completely to the tracks, stopping the maglevs from getting where they’re going. Or, perhaps overload the power of the tracks, causing a train to speed out of control? sh’Qynallahr: Stopping the train would annoy them, speeding one out of control could result in Cardassian casualties. I vote for the latter if it’s possible. Fingers remained silent, but nodded with Blades’ assessment. Sevo: How about this? These two trains — ::She highlighted two tracks and the present locations of two trains.:: — are scheduled to use the same track at different times. If I overload power to this part — ::a section of track turned orange where a train presently was :: — then that train will speed up uncontrollably. While they’d normally avoid each other with the faster train taking this fork — ::pointing to another lit area:: — if I shut off power to that fork, it will cause the out-of-control train to keep on the same track. sh’Qynallahr: Red, I love the way you think. Sometimes it scares me, but I think the results tend to speak for themselves. Neathler: As long as we’re nowhere near the tunnels or this room. As she spoke, she sped up time on the model. The orange sections denoting the two trains moved towards each other on one track. With a devious smile, Ayiana continued. Sevo: They should meet around here; — ::the two orange sections converged, turning red when they met. :: — rather spectacularly. ::Ayiana mimed with her hands two trains colliding together, then made an explosion gesture. :: sh’Qynallahr: And when they check the rail logs, all they’ll see is a power surge stopping one train, and accelerating another. It was just poor timing that they were in those places when it happened. Sevo: That’s the hope at least. They may discover it would be sabotage, eventually, but hopefully by that time, we’d be long gone. Stoyer: OK, Fingers. I think I have something we can use. Ayiana had forgotten about Strip’s job, namely finding parts and a way to rig the power room to explode remotely. Neathler: Thank you, Strip. All we need is a place to hide it. Sevo: Does it need direct contact with anything specific, like a transformer? Strip placed the device on the table and put something else in his bag together with the toolkit. sh’Qynallahr: It could even draw attention away from important surface targets, making the jobs of our other teams a lot easier. Stoyer: That is a good thing. Neathler: Hopefully, they’ll leave the colonists alone though. Ayiana knew they wouldn’t. When the Cardassians find the substation was destroyed intentionally, she had no doubts in her mind that they’d be true to their threat — killing multiple colonists for every Cardassian killed. It was a hard line to think about; they were here to stop them, but their actions would result in the deaths of the people they were trying to save. Were they going to far this time? sh’Qynallahr: Could we use that radio to send a secure transmission to Papa Bear, informing him of what we’ve found and planned? Stoyer: I wouldn’t risk it. The Cardies are probably scanning for any kind of transmission. Neathler: We’ve got our own combadges. We should contact him once we’re back on the surface in the open somewhere. Sevo: Agreed. Anything broadcasting in the clear is too dangerous. Strip pointed to the device he had made on the table. It looked like any other homemade explosive they rigged up over the years, but Ayiana didn’t immediately see a way it could be remotely activated. Stoyer: I have the device you wanted, Fingers. Again, I am no explosives expert, but it should work. Neathler: Good work, Strip. Sevo: Looks good to me. sh’Qynallahr: Response Stoyer: I will need to wire it into the power grid. I have a signaller that should send a signal to blow it when we need it. Fingers looked around the room. There were still a few cabinets that hadn’t been searched, but those spoons that ran from Blades’ sharp voice, or others, could return any moment. Neathler: Strip, install it behind a console or inside a console, somewhere the spoons won’t find it immediately. Red, can you set up what you had in mind? Just give us enough time to reach the surface. Blades, still no sign of our gray friends? Ayiana nodded, returning her attention to the console. She input the parameters from the model into the power grid. The trains were several kilometers apart and away from them, but an impact of that magnitude will still send seismic shockwaves through the ground, and probably cause overloading of the powered maglev itself. Stoyer/sh’Qynallahr: Response As Ayiana finished inputting the program, she saw Fingers move over to the door next to Blades. Neathler: All set? With a final button press, she set the program in motion. Right now, one train would begin speeding up, and another slowing down. Sevo: Yep, we’ve got about ten minutes before the big bang. We don’t want to be in the subways when it happens. Stoyer/sh’Qynallahr: Response Just as they moved inside the tunnel, the tremble started. Another train above them came from the opposite direction and drove in the direction they came from. Ayiana followed Fingers further down the tunnel in the direction the earlier Cardassians went. She moved further into the maintenance tunnel, the same direction the spoons had disappeared in. Once the train had passed, Fingers spoke up. Neathler: Whatever happens next, make sure one of us stays out of the spoons’ hands. Like Blades’ said, it’s time to exchange information. Sevo: What do you mean by that? Stoyer/sh’Qynallahr: Response They raced further down the maintenance tunnel until they found another ladder up into the subway proper. Ayiana looked down at the map on her tricorder. Sevo: There should be another station up there, and a way out. Neathler/Stoyer/sh’Qynallahr: Response They climbed out of the ladder and into another maintenance room, though this one didn’t look like it was being used by the Cardies. There was a door at the far end, which easily opened into another subway station. Like the one before, it was empty, and a little dirty, but otherwise intact. Again, Ayiana looked at her tricorder, this time looking up the stopwatch she set for her little sabotage. Sevo: Five minutes until the trains collide. There’s an exit to the streets over there. ::She pointed to a wide set of stairs. Stoyer/sh’Qynallahr: Response Sevo: The explosion will cause significant seismic waves throughout the area, and the ground will probably cave in above it. It will probably overload the power to the maglev, too, causing outages and further secondary explosions and fires all along the subway system. It’ll cripple the use of it for the Spoons. :: She smiled menacingly.:: Stoyer/sh’Qynallahr: Response ---------------------------- Ayiana “Red” Sevo Fighter ---------------------------- Simmed by ---------------------------- Lt. Alcyone Brennan Posted March 14, 2023 Posted March 14, 2023 Loved it!! my one piece of criticism is that it ended too soon - sounds like you’re having an cool mission going on! 2 Quote
