StarBase 118 Staff Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Our community Writing Challenge ran from 2003 to 2014 and provided players with writing prompts six times a year. Prompts could be anything from “a character’s sacrifice” to “where do you see the universe in 10 years.” Over the course of 11 years, an anthology of creative writing was produced. While the challenge ended in 2014 after a long and successful run, there’s lots to read and remember from this archive. In this column, we’ll be looking back at some of the highlights. This month’s edition includes two entries from March/April 2006. The challenge was simple: A Poison Apple. Let’s take a look at some of the stories that were produced! “The Last Entry” by Ventu Written in an unusual format, this story contains an excellent read in the form of a captain’s log. Focusing around the captain of the Starship Ebudae as they arrive at deserted system and are ordered to retrieve a device from the planet’s surface. “The Fruit Born of a Poisoned Tree” by David Cody Starfleet officers have a duty, to Starfleet and the Federation. This intriguing tale tells the story of a woman, a prisoner and the Starfleet officer who rescues her. Full of passionate, emotive writing, this story really captures the character’s essence and thoughts as you follow their journey. But, is all as it seems? Hungry for more?
