Constitutional amendment: Expansion of non-discrimination clause

The Executive and Captains Councils are happy to announce the first of two constitutional amendments that have been passed in the last few days.

We’ll explain more about the second amendment in the next few days, but the first involves protections against discrimination. While we have always maintained a strict non-discrimination policy here, our community Constitution has not necessarily reflected that.

To that end, the councils have discussed and voted on an amendment to Article V, section 1 of the Constitution.

The previous version read as follows:

The UFOP shall be open to membership by any person of any color, race, creed, nationality, religion, health status, culture, form of birth, educational level, age, genetic heritage or native language, provided that they meet and satisfy, and continue to satisfy, the criteria of admission and performance herein related and otherwise established in documents not inconsistent with this CONSTITUTION, such as by-laws or administrative regulations.

The new version is as follows, with the bolded sections representing the new words included:

The UFOP shall be open to membership by any person of any race, color, national origin, form of birth, genetic heritage or native language, culture, religion, creed,
sex
,
gender identity (including gender expression)
,
sexual orientation
, age,
disability
or
health status
,
marital status
,
family/parental status
, or
educational level
, provided that they meet and satisfy, and continue to satisfy, the criteria of admission and performance herein related and otherwise established in documents not inconsistent with this CONSTITUTION, such as by-laws or administrative regulations.

We hope this change demonstrates our ongoing commitment to diversity. We encourage all interested parties to also reference our disability policy.
