  1. Hello everyone,

In an effort to ensure that we are as fair as possible, I'd like to open the floor to everyone to post their suggestions or comments about how the contest works. Are we doing this right? What should we change? How can we make it better? How can we ensure that we have the best sims?

Please feel free to be open and honest. I cannot guarantee that we'll use every suggestion or change everything commented-upon, but we will carefully consider everything mentioned.

Please be sure to e-mail anyone you know who participated in the contest and direct them to this thread, especially if you know they had gripes about how it worked!

  2. Two quick notes:

    1. Per the instructions, if you want your story to be considered in the contest, it has to have the > icon next to it. You can reply to this post and use the > icon, and we will be sure to mark your original piece as complete.

    2. If you wish to include your story in the contest, it cannot be Copyrighted. Per our terms of service, all works which pass through SB118 properties (incl. but not limited to the Yahoo! Groups, and anything on the SB118 servers) are automatically licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 license, which is not a copyright. Your original post must be amended to be included in this contest, or it will be deleted immediately from the server.

  3. The Data Artistic Award was (somehow!) left off the award nomination ballot this year, so I'd like to go ahead and get nominations now! Here's the information from our Awards Ceremony area of the site about what this award is about:

Rewarded to any officer in the fleet who has made a consistent effort to enter each of the bi-monthly writing challenges. Most notably, the officer must have continued participation even if their submissions were not picked as the winner, thus sticking with the challenge and always giving other something exciting to read.

The award is named after the late Lt. Cmdr. Data of the USS Enterprise-E, an officer who always attempted arts such as poetry, painting, acting, and singing, keeping up his attempts even if he did not succeed or gain critical praise with his first attempts.

Please e-mail the nominations list directly with your nominations. Include in your nomination:

    - Your character name

    - The character name of the person you're nominating

    - Reason you're nominating them

We'll review them and include this award as part of the staff ceremony we put out each year :) All nominations must be submitted by 12-31-08. Thanks everyone!

(P.S.- Please do not post any nominations in this thread!)

  4. This vote is to choose the TOP SIM OF THE YEAR from the nominations which were voted on throughout the year.

Please choose ONE sim from the poll, based on the MERIT of the sim. Please vote with your conscience, and not with your crew allegiance. This is NOT a popularity contest! This sim will be posted prominently on our website, and we want to showcase all the BEST of our site!

Also, keep in mind that any crews found "stuffing the ballots" or ratings, will be disqualified PERMANENTLY - yes, that means the whole crew.

The order and selection of the sims was determined by the Top Sims Contest "end of year" procedure. See this post for more information.

The poll ends on Sunday, January 4th, 2009 at 11:59pm Pacific.

Sim links, to read the sims:

    - "What We Owe" by Sidney Riley

    - "The Wedding" by Idril Mar, Danny Wilde, and friends

    - "Explorations of Partner-ish- ship" by Karynn Ehlanii & Ethan Brice

    - "Tonight, We Will Argue (part 1)" by Karynn Ehlanii & Ethan Brice

    - "It's Not All Great Being Engaged" by Heath West & Toni Turner

  5. Apparently, we're an indecisive bunch. Even as I expanded the last rounds to give us a four, instead of 1 or 2 top sims, we can't seem to decide! So now the final round will include FIVE sims (*grumblegrumble*), because Runoff Round 2 had three winners. Anyway, here's the list of the finalists:

    1. "It's Not All Great Being Engaged" by Heath West & Toni Turner

    2. "Explorations of Partner-ish- ship" by Karynn Ehlanii & Ethan Brice

    3. "What We Owe" by Sidney Riley

    4. "Tonight, We Will Argue (part 1)" by Karynn Ehlanii & Ethan Brice

    5. "The Wedding" by Idril Mar, Danny Wilde, and friends

I ran these through the Random.org tool, and here's the order of the final five:

    3. "What We Owe" by Sidney Riley

    5. "The Wedding" by Idril Mar, Danny Wilde, and friends

    2. "Explorations of Partner-ish- ship" by Karynn Ehlanii & Ethan Brice

    4. "Tonight, We Will Argue (part 1)" by Karynn Ehlanii & Ethan Brice

    1. "It's Not All Great Being Engaged" by Heath West & Toni Turner

We can talk about maybe having some rules about only have one sim in the final round next year, but for this year, that's the set. Please head on to the poll and vote!

  6. This vote is to choose a sim to proceed to the final round of the contest. Please choose one sim from the first poll, and one sim from the second poll. Remember that this vote is based on MERIT, not the fact that someone is your crewmate. Any crews found "stuffing the ballots" or ratings, will be disqualified PERMANENTLY - yes, that means the whole crew. This is NOT a popularity contest! This is a vote to find the BEST SIM in our fleet, which will then be lauded by our group on our website!

The order and selection of the sims was determined by the Top Sims Contest "end of year" procedure. See this post for more information.

    - "LtCmdr. Ben Walker" by Ben Walker

    - "Death Throes" by Will Rogers

    - "The Wedding" by Idril Mar, Danny Wilde, and friends

    - "Beneath the Surface" by Jackford Kolk & Karynn Ehlanii

  7. Changes to the end of year procedure:

Because "Death Throes" by Will Rogers got lost in the shuffle (it was part of a tie vote), I am splitting the last runoff round into two polls. Six choices in the first section, five choices in the second section. Everyone will need to pick one in each of the two sections. Those two selections will advance to the final round to create a total of four sims.

How will the final round work?

In the final round, there will be four sims posted in a poll. I will use the Random.org tool to choose the order of the sims.

Voters will have two weeks in December to vote on the final sims.

The order of the last sims is as follows:

    Section 1

    - "Nightmares Revealed" by Arista Devar & Emirry MacGowan

    - "Rebellion" by Lily Ventu

    - "No one can hurt you" by Hugh Barnes

    - "Stinging Truths" by Sidney Riley & Quinn Reynolds

    - "WildeFinger" by Idril Mar & Danny Wilde

    - "What We Owe" by Sidney Riley

    Section 2

    - "Tonight, We Will Argue (part 1)" by Karynn Ehlanii & Ethan Brice

    - "LtCmdr. Ben Walker" by Ben Walker

    - "Death Throes" by Will Rogers

    - "The Wedding" by Idril Mar, Danny Wilde, and friends

    - "Beneath the Surface" by Jackford Kolk & Karynn Ehlanii

  8. The results of this round's voting are, shall-we-say, "inconclusive." As such, I'm going to allow both "It's Not All Great Being Engaged" by Heath West & Toni Turner, and "Explorations of Partner-ish- ship" by Karynn Ehlanii & Ethan Brice into the final runoff round.

  9. Guidelines: To participate, create a new thread. The subject of the thread must be the title of your story. If it is a Work In Progress, denote that with the heart post icon. If your work is complete, use the horizontal arrow post icon. Items not marked with an icon or marked with the WiP icon will not be considered for judging and will be moved to the "Character Cafe" forum at the end of the contest. Your work must be entirely your own. No co-authoring. You are welcome to create any character you so desire, but they must be from the Star Trek universe. No "canon" characters allowed. (i.e.- No one who has been on a show.) Want to participate, but can't start a new topic? Why didn't you view the "Read Me First!" forum? You'll need to ask a moderator or Senior Member to create a thread for you!

  10. This vote is to choose a sim to proceed to the final round of the contest. Please choose one of the 10 sims, and remember that this vote is based on MERIT, not the fact that someone is your crewmate. Any crews found "stuffing the ballots" or ratings, will be disqualified PERMANENTLY - yes, that means the whole crew. This is NOT a popularity contest! This is a vote to find the BEST SIM in our fleet, which will then be lauded by our group on our website!
