HAVE YOUR SAY: Federation Transport Union Strike

TransportUnionStrike.jpg

The Issue

The Federation Transport Union, citing continued Nausicaan pirate attacks and Klingon raids that have killed dozens of transport crews, is currently on strike. All shipping and transit runs have been suspended, including those of 812 major shipping carriers.

The Transport Union argues that President Nan Bacco and the Federation Council have not done enough to protect the shipping routes, particularly those connecting the outer colonies to the core worlds.

President Bacco, who unsuccessfully attempted to avert the strike late last year, has pledged aid to the outer colonies during the strike although the details have yet to be revealed. Meanwhile, Starfleet has responded to the pirate attacks with Operation Safe Harbor, but its effectiveness is inconclusive, with many calling for additional resources to be put into the effort.

The Transport Union have a right to be concerned about their safety. Its unfortunate that they haven't been provided with proper security and that they've had to resort to a strike for this issue to be noticed.

As for Bacco's handling the situation . . . what more and what less could she honestly do. One can't simply snap their fingers and immediately assign security forces to these ships, and it's not really Starfleet's job to play the role of security guards.

Speaking as a former member of the FTU - the strike is entirely understandable. The margins were already poor to many areas, and the added burden of having insurance rates go up or more weaponry or even attempt to hire private protection cause many merchant skippers heavy headaches.

That said, though, I cannot disagree with how Bacco is managing it. I would wonder though - might not Starfleet Command learn a lesson from an ancient Terran navy - convoy? It's not a bad idea.
