  1. Join our 10th Annual Halloween Avatar Contest! Here's the quick-and-spooky: Each crew chooses a theme – like "Nightmare Before Christmas," or "Mugshots," or "Sesame Street" – then, each person on the crew is assigned a character and changes their forum avatar to an image of that character. A panel of judges (one person from each ship) helps decide the winners! HOW TO ENTER THE COMPETITION Each crew must pick a theme. (You should already have an OOC email thread about it!) For a member of the crew to be considered part of the team, they must: change their avatar here on the forums check in to crew's official thread in this forum (more on that below) with a funny quote, quip, or greeting. (i.e.- "Trick or treat!"). Please keep any other extraneous posts out of this thread as it will be used to count the ship's participants. Regarding check-in threads: The second post in the check-in thread must an announcement of the ship's theme. Participants must be checked-in to their ship's thread in this forum by Sunday, October 25 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Avatars must remain in their costumed forms until at least Saturday, October 31 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Each crew entering the contest must upload their avatars to the wiki following this tutorial to the letter. Please follow each instructions closely and exactly – your crew will be disqualified if you do not follow the instructions! JUDGING SCORING Originality of theme: You may not use a theme that involves Starfleet crews we've seen onscreen or in beta canon – so no Enterprise, Voyager, DS9 crews, etc.! You are welcome to use other Star Trek themes if you want. Beyond that, just get really creative! Design quality of avatars: Check out past entrants and winners for some understanding of what we're looking for. Important note on design: Avatar designers should ensure that the avatars, as they appear on each person's check-in post, works best. Many ships create a "unified graphic" with all the characters on it, and then just slice that up. But this often leaves text unreadable once each person puts the avatar onto their profile. So focus more on making the avatar appear correctly on the forums. Keep in mind that the unified graphic is not judged or required, so while it's a bit of fun to bring all the avatars together and show the theme, don't assume that unified graphic will win you the contest! Number of crew members checked in: This is a multiplier to the previous two qualifications. For example, if the official crew roster (maintained by the ship CO and FO) says there are 12 crew members, and 5 people are checked-in to the thread, then your multiplier is 42%. JUDGES PANEL We'll ask each ship to send a volunteer – they can't be the ship's CO, and they must not be on more than one ship. Each judge will rank every ship's entry on the originality and design quality per above. Judges will not be able to rank their own ship in the first position. We'll use Ranked Choice Voting to determine the winner for each category. Once we have the scores for each of the two categories, we'll add them together, and then multiply by the number of crew members checked in, per above. The crew with the highest score, total, wins the competition. We'll also announce the runners-up. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS » How do I change my avatar? A detailed tutorial is found here. » What's the deal with the funny quote, quip, or greeting required on the check-in thread? It could be a quote from the character you're using, or something funny that you just make up on the fly. But make it good -- ask your teammates for help if you need inspiration! » Can my team use a theme that's previously been used? Yes, as long as you use new images. » Where do we get avatar images if none of us on my team are good at graphics? Check out the graphics request forum. Ask nicely for best results! » Do the avatars have to look like the characters? No. » How is participation counted? What about secondaries and disabled members? The number of possible participants will be pulled from the official ship roster (maintained by CO and FO) on Monday, October 26. We will discount properly marked secondaries and any members who are disabled and cannot access the forums, as per the CO of the ship. » When will winners be announced? Near the end of October/beginning of November. » What do the winners get? A forum badge everyone can put in their signature, and serious credibility. » What if I have other questions? Post them in the discussion thread! Forum icon made by Freepik from www.flaticon.com.

  11. All hail last year's conquering tyrants! Gorkon submitted a prescient Lower Decks theme to win first place: While the Constitution crew were the runners-up with an Academy Yearbook theme! Can we give a hand to these great designs? You can see all the rest of the past designs in the wiki archive.
  12. Thanks to everyone who helped organize and facilitate their crew’s participation in this contest. This year six of our seven ships and bases participated. Here’s our list of themes: Constitution: Tarot cards Gorkon: CD labels Veritas: Westworld Andaris TF: Game of Thrones Embassy: Norse gods SB118 Ops: High fantasy Participation was very high, with three ships at 100% and all other ships at 75% or higher! There were eight judges this year, all from our community. We chose one judge from each ship/base, and yours truly – FltAdml. Wolf – also participated as a judge. Each judge was asked to rank the entrants in two categories: originality and design quality. Then, we multiplied those scores against participation of each ship to come up with a final number. The anonymous scores were checked by two members of the fleet for accuracy. So who won? (Click the “read more” button to see!) Congratulations go to the crew of the USS Constitution-B for their tarot cards! Runners-up are the crew of the USS Gorkon, with their CD labels. Both of the top crews receive participation badges. 16. Happy Halloween everyone! I’m so happy to announce that every ship entered! And there was some amazing work done – every year the entries get better and better. Thanks to everyone who participated, and especially to those who helped get their crews to select a theme and those who helped design the avatars. Read on to find out who won… THIS YEAR’S JUDGES There were three judges, the first of which was yours truly. The other two judges were guests, and we thank them for participating: Logan “TheHumanFloyd” Nickel: Founder of RPHQ.org, a site dedicated to uniting roleplayers of all stripes to work together and feed one another’s creativity! Learn more on YouTube and Twitter. Admiral Myrkul Sharr: One-third of the eccentric trio in Obsidian Fleet’s Joint Fleet Command, also the crazy person to chair FallFest VI (Shameless Plugging Start) #OWFallFest. THE SCORING The judges reviewed all the avatars in the check-in threads. They ranked all the participants in two categories from one to eight, with one being the lowest score and eight the highest. The two categories were Originality and Design. The scores in each category were then added together and multiplied by the participation score. (So if 80% of the crew participated, then your scores were multiplied by 80%.) For “best in show,” each judge nominated three of their favorite avatars. The person with the most nominations won. (One person received two nominations, in this case. If there hadn’t been more than one nom, I would have chosen the winner myself.) BEST IN SHOW With two nominations out of the nine total made, congratulations to Lt. JG Savan of Duronis II Embassy, who had not only a great avatar, but also a funny quote RUNNERS-UP Setting aside the participation score just for a moment, we had a tie for second place in originality: Darwin and Za. Congratulations to them for the very unique themes. Darwin was also second place in the design category, just one point shy of the winner. The fun and clean designs were a big hit. To that end, Darwin’s the clear runners-up. Top two in the last two years – not bad! GRAND PRIZE WINNERS And now to our overall winners. This team won all categories in the raw scores AND had 100% participation, beating Darwin by two points overall. Congratulations StarBase 118 Ops with their Steampunk crew! The great theme coupled with the beautiful avatars stole the show. Way to go Ops! THE PRIZES Unfortunately we don’t have a “best in show” badge, but we’ll get one designed Darwin’s primates receive runners-up badges. Our winners, SB118 Ops Steampunk crew, receive winning team badges. These are available on our badges wiki page. Thanks again to everyone for participating. Please congratulate the winners and runners-up in our discussion thread. The post Here are the Halloween Avatar Contest 2016 winners appeared first on UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. 18. RISA is a free to join, social network designed for Star Trek fans by Star Trek fan Richard Evans, who kindly judged our 2015 Halloween Avatar Contest recently! It’s a great place to meet like minded individuals who love our favourite franchise and a fun place to kick back and chat, share our highs, lows and opinions. Over at RISA they’re always looking at ways to improve the community and have delivered a lot of new features including the ability to add the role playing group you’re affiliated with to profiles as well as a link to that site, the ability to create polls and many other cool features. If you’ve not popped in since they switched over to their clean new engine a few months ago it’s definitely worth taking a look. 19. Happy Halloween my friends! This year we really did it in style. From Zombie rockstars to Mad Scientists to a Creepy Carnival that’s still giving me nightmares, this was a great year for our avatar contest. Thanks to everyone who participated, especially those who created the avatars and those who helped their crewmates to check-in and don their costume. THE JUDGES This year there were three judges: Myself, FltAdml. WolfEilidh Douglas Montgomery, First Officer of the USS Alba which is part of the Scottish Chapter for STARFLEET international fan club.Richard Evans, founder, creator, and owner of RISA social media website.THE SCORING The judges reviewed all the avatars in the check-in threads. They ranked all the participants in two categories from one to eight, with one being the lowest score and eight the highest. The two categories were Originality and Design. The scores in each category were then added together and multiplied by the participation score. (So if 80% of the crew participated, then your scores were multiplied by 80%.) We did not choose a “best in show” this year. RUNNERS-UP Setting aside the participation score just for a moment, StarBase 118 Ops Zombie Rockstars won the Originality category! Congratulations to them for putting together such a unique theme! I’m also going to announce the second-place team in the Design category since the first-place winner in this category won the whole competition. Congratulations to the Constitution crew for the classic presidential design avatars – the clean, simple designs wowed the judges. GRAND PRIZE WINNERS And now to our overall winners! Although this team came in second place in the Originality category, they won the Design category, and even before assessing the participation score on other crews (this crew had 100% participation), their two scores together was the clear winner in the overall score. And with the participation score weighting, this team was practically sitting on Frankenstein’s shoulders. Winning the 2015 Halloween Avatar Contest handily: Darwin’s Mad Scientists! THE PRIZES SB118 Ops’ Zombie Rockstars and Constitution’s Presidents will each receive runners-up badges. Our winners, the Darwin’s Mad Scientists, will receive winning team badges. Unfortunately we don’t have these for you just yet – we hope to have them out within the next two weeks. 21. What is scary... I made lot of scary pictures for this Halloween Avatar contest and some look really ugly, but watching them all and thinking what would be the most terrifying for me I chose this one. My character is growing tail - she is human, we don't have tails and hers is abomination. She contracted a bug which attached to her spine and caused this growth. So what if something can make you grow another head, worse, what if that one is controlled by a brain which has completely different lifestyle. In this picture I imagined good doctor Blueheart looking at bad second head smoking, thinking - he is using, rather abusing my lungs. Basic idea for the picture is made by Dr. Blueheart for his Avatar by the idea for our contest entry "The Creepy Carnival", which is also his.

Oh, and it’s time for our 5th Annual Halloween Avatar Contest! Here’s how it works: Each crew chooses a theme, like “Nightmare Before Christmas,” or “Mugshots,” or “Sesame Street.” Then, each person on the crew is assigned a character and changes their avatar to an image of that character. Then, a set of impartial judges votes on the best! The judges will score on originality and quality, and then add the scores together and discount by the number of participants to get the overall winner. Full instructions about how to participate, including a detailed tutorial on changing your avatar, are on the forum. Check it out.
