  2. MARS – Investigators from Starfleet Science division onboard the USS Moniy, led by Commander Andy Dreyfuss, have discovered several undecipherable writings in a cavern near the north pole of Mars. The science team was sent to the red planet to investigate reports of several strange readings in the region. However, Cmdr. Dreyfuss stumbled upon an undiscovered cavern some distance west of the planet’s magnetic north pole. Inside, the ship’s crew discovered several markings of an unknown alien language. “This is such an amazing discovery,” exclaims Ens. Trialy. “I have never seen anything like this before. Maybe these findings will show us who set foot on Mars prior then we did.” Other teams of multiple species, including Vulcans, Tellarites and Betazoids, have reported in, to investigate the markings, which are already stirring up linguistic groups at Starfleet Science. Earlier investigations into deciphering the runes were unsuccessful. However, other science teams reported mild readings of chroniton emissions, which indicated signs of temporal distortion. Whether temporal meddling was involved, is still under investigation. The post USS Moniy Finds Ancient Alien Runes On Mars appeared first on Federation News Service. View the full article
  3. POLLUS — Planetary defense laser destroys village on Pollus in the Par’tha Expanse. A terrifying scene is unfolding in a remote protectorate of the Federation as a weapon meant to keep inhabitants of the planet Pollus safe has wiped out a village and all inhabitants. The weapon has been deactivated for the foreseeable future while the military council investigates the tragic occurrence. While rescue efforts were attempted, it quickly became clear there were no survivors anywhere in the vicinity. The exact number of casualties is unknown as local villages rarely report population numbers to the central government. Local government seems to be in chaos as the military council refuses to release any information until the investigation concludes. The governing council, comprised of the upper echelon of the planet’s government, were not forthcoming on details. “We will get to the bottom of this no matter what it takes. No words can express our sorrow,” said council member Asheera, head of planetary defense. Multiple anonymous sources in the military have confirmed that the planetary invasion protocols were being tested at the time of the incident. The protocols were intended to identify hostile entities in nearby space and fire automatically. In this case, the weapon automatically locked onto the village and fired, burning a crater over two miles wide into the surface. The council has suspended all tests and demanded the system be deactivated. The political fallout is swiftly spiralling out of control as local communication reveals outrage from the people of Pollus toward Asheera – widely beloved before this incident and seen as a favorite in the next election for the seat of council chair – and the government at large. Meanwhile, Alliance Members Grizousco, when asked for his reaction, expressed frustration, “We will not stand as the council hides the finding from us. As we’re all allied together and if they can’t trust us to help then can we trust them?” The post Planetary Defense Laser Misfires Causing Casualties appeared first on Federation News Service. 4. SETLIK III – Starfleet Academy Division of Science & Arts announced this week that with the Cardassian Union, on Setlik III, a planet in the Demilitarized Zone, will unveil a new Science Academy. The Academy, specifically designed, will accommodate for Bajorans and, on special dispensation, accepted Cardassian cadets. Invited by Starfleet, this will fill multiple positions in some divisions that have been understaffed in this sector of the Alpha Quadrant. The Academy will also staff several Bajoran teachers accepted to teach Starfleet cadets. Dr Almas Thye, a Bajoran astrophysicist, will also take on directorial duties. “This academy will allow the Federation to aid in the reconstruction of the Cardassian Union by offering many promising duty posts for Cardassian cadets,” said Dr Robert Dawn, lead sociologist attached to nearby Deep Space 9. “A united scientific program will help approach the remaining tension between the Bajoran and Cardassian people.” They also offered Dawn to fill in teacher duties for sociology students, especially with his expertise in Cardassian societal structures. Other prominent teachers include Vulcan mathematician Dr Riann, an expert on Non-Euclidian Geometry, and Dr Liam Atkinson, an expert on Bajoran architecture. Including the ill-noted Cardassian, Dr Rivall raised many questions. The extended offer to fill in duties as a microbiology teacher, however, made several Bajoran staff complain about his position. “Dr Rivall has conducted experiments on sacred Bajoran grounds during the occupation time,” said Dr Alvas, medical teacher on Bajor. “His methods are questionable, at best.” Whether the Bajoran staff will work closely with Cardassian teachers will be up to the administration. However, the Betazoid guidance councillor attached to the Academy, Dr Fari, assured someone will thoroughly screen all the staff before admission. “Dr Rivall is a renown master of microbiology, one of the best in his field, at least in the Alpha Quadrant. Because of his past, he wants to make amends towards the Bajoran community,” she explained. “We will not overlook his actions against the Bajorans, but we would rather focus upon his accomplishments in his field.” The idea is to open the Academy which presumably will go by the name New Scientific United Academy earlier this year. 5. CASTAL I – A medical relief ship from Starfleet has been sent to help control an epidemic of the Kamaraazite flu on the Federation colony stationed on Castal I. Anxieties between Federation and Talarian relationships renewed over the cause of the plague. Earlier this month Starfleet dispatched the USS Marie Curie to Castal I on a medical relief and aid mission, but what they discovered there was far more problematic than the Kamaraazite flu. Several officers, commenting anonymously, have spoken to the FNS after observing worrying trends of xenophobia and isolationism which have divided the colony’s population along xenophobic lines. “It’s a real tragedy,” said one Medical Officer, speaking confidentially, “these people have lived and worked together for years, but the spectre of an illness as virulent as the Kamaraazite flu has made citizens deeply fearful for their safety, and that of their families.” The officer said that the isolationist practices are doing little to combat the problem and exacerbating it as sick colonists are not seeking medical aid outside their own communities. “They should go back where they came from,” Irrigation Specialist Daniel Jeronic told us, “I’ve lived here my entire life and we never had problems with diseases until those filthy Talarians showed up.” Jeronic continued, “I’m not saying all aliens are bad – far from it. Nice clean folks like the Vulcans or the Betazoids are always welcome here. But these Talarians just don’t know their place.” The Marie Curie will remain in an orbit of Castal I until the flu outbreak is under control, but Colony Administrator Shenoc T’Lala, worries about the lasting damage this xenophobia could cause to her community. “We have to work harder to educate our population on the realities of the situation and not give in to fear-mongering by a few agitated citizens. My administration will set up a special task force hoping to foster renewed understanding between our fine citizens, and those of our visiting neighbours. The core of the Federation is cooperation and we’re confident that, once this crisis passes, people will return to a more reasonable state of mind.” The post Outbreak of Kamaraazite Flu on Castal I, Sparking Anti-Talarian Sentiment appeared first on Federation News Service. 7. Named for the region of space in which it was discovered and its devil-like appearance, Romanus spatium satanum is a species of solanogen-based life form native to the mysterious realms of subspace. While evidence indicates many Federation and Romulan vessels have encountered the creature in the past, the Starfleet exploratory vessel USS Gorkon (NCC-82293) made the first recorded encounter recently with an unusual specimen of Romanus spatium satanum. The Gorkon barely escaped from the devilfish’s clutches when the creature attempted to drain power from the starship’s EPS reserves. Due to the hasty departure of the Gorkon from the Roman Expanse, they recovered little sensor data on the creature. However, when they combined collected data with a repository of advanced alien knowledge given to the crew of the Gorkon by the Seraphim, an intelligent subspace species, a much more comprehensive picture formed. According to the Seraphim, Romanus spatium satanum is based upon the subspace element solanogen in the same way most biological life found in our universe is based upon the element carbon. This is a trend researchers have found in the few biological subspace lifeforms discovered. The creature itself is massive, over 2.2 kilometers at its widest dimension. The devilfish looks similar in appearance to the Terran aquatic starfish, but biologically, scientists classify the creature closer to crustaceans like the Risan barnacle. However, no direct comparison will be adequate for a species developed in a completely separate space-time from our own. The specimen encountered by the Gorkon had five distinct “arms,” again like a starfish, each arm measuring an average of 700 meters and the longest measuring at over 1,100 meters. Scientists theorize other individuals of the species could have fewer or many more arms. Ensign Seneca Wilde is an exobiologist and astrophysicist serving as the lead scientist on the team studying the Seraphim repository at the time. She believes the creature the Gorkon encountered seems to be an aberrant specimen. “From what we can tell — from cellular deformities in certain epidermal lymph nodes — these things are normally much smaller, say, about a meter arm-to-arm,” she said. This begs the question: why is this specimen so large? From the information provided by the Seraphim, the pulsar cluster at the center of the Expanse created a specific tetryonic/photon resonance in the surrounding space/subspace, which allowed the devilfish to travel between space-time fissures. “It could cross from subspace into our space practically at will,” said Wilde. “Now these devilfish, as far as we know, get energy from a process similar to photosynthesis, only with tetryons: tetrysynthesis, if you will. This devilfish found a way into our space-time — which is full of photonic light instead of tetryonic light — and started converting photons into its tetrysynthesis process.” Photons, while travelling much slower than tetryons, have much more energy per particle than tetryons. Once the devilfish began using photons this way, it couldn’t stop. “It started growing larger because of all the fresh energy, but its larger size now required even more energy, which made it even larger,” explained Wilde. “It was a vicious circle, and it’s why the devilfish needed to keep feeding off the electroplasmatic energy from starships. Once it got to a large enough size, photonic light wasn’t good enough for it so it needed more concentrated energy, and it got that from the ships that got trapped in the nebula because of the subspace fissures.” The devilfish encountered by the Gorkon also had the terrifying ability to radiate high-energy, electroplasmatic shockwaves from emitter cells in its epidermal layers. Wilde said these shockwaves are normally mild in others of Romanus spatium satanum, but this specimen — because of its extreme size and use of high-energy photons in its tetrysynthesis process — could radiate shockwaves registering an energy output higher than several dozen high-yield photon torpedoes. This defensive feature has military defense contractors very interested. According to anonymous sources on Cardassia Prime, a joint scientific team from the Arcturai-Gand Military Defense Corporation of Cardassia and the Kang Teth’a Corporation of the Klingon Empire has plans to send heavily reinforced starships into the nebula to do further research upon the subspace creature. 8. SAN FRANCISCO, EARTH – Earlier today, Starfleet Security issued a retraction of their previous alert, bringing the Sol system’s defence status officially back to ‘green.’ (Editor’s note Green = ~ 560–520 nm ~ 540–580 THz). Apologizing for the public disruption caused by the false alarm, Commodore Raoul Oterboro was quick to spin the situation positively. “Our alert was sent after we received credible holo footage of numerous individuals on the Starfleet Academy campus seemingly changing shape, size and appearance at will. By the time we realized the Academy’s Halloween Gala had been rescheduled and our ‘changelings’ were engineering students using a novel personal holoprojector, the damage was done. Starfleet Security regrets the disruptions to trade, communication and travel which occurred.” When pressed for followup information, Commodore Oterboro apologized, claimed he couldn’t hear us and that he was ‘going through a wormhole,’ and closed the connection. Academy cadets were not as tight-lipped about the incident, but none wished to go on record by name. When asked about the incident, a senior cadet chuckled, “Halloween wasn’t a thing in my colony, but apparently it’s something of an informal competition for some of the Humans and a few other species around here. Gets crazy every year for a few weeks. Last year’s winners had a team Horta costume that was fantastic – looked so real.” A junior cadet wandering by overheard our conversation and volunteered the following, “I heard that the whole engineering school is spending the rest of the semester repainting the undersides of all the rocks in the Commandant’s garden. Worth it though – those people are absolute legends.” A few other cadets had less positive feedback about the disruptive nature of the misunderstanding. “The Human fascination with fantasy and the procurement of nutritionally deleterious confections has once again thrown a world into peril.” The junior cadet arched an eyebrow before continuing, “I abandoned my studies and sought shelter per procedure when the alarm sounded. It was a deeply inefficient use of my time.” The Commandant’s office did not respond to questions directly, but a later press release on the subject affirmed that they would not cancel the annual event in the future, but that they will make every effort to remind the public and the relevant security agencies well in advance next year. 9. SAN FRANCISCO, EARTH – Every year, bright-faced and happy-go-lucky Cadets enter Starfleet with nothing but a dream and a wish in their hearts, eager for learning and to one day step aboard a Starship as a fresh-faced Ensign, and perhaps one day… a Captain. And, like clockwork, every year rumours arise about The Haunting. “Look,” said Cadet Arisa, a second-year medical cadet. “I’m not saying I believe in spirits or whatever, but sometimes at night… Sometimes, like, you hear things.” Cadet Linn, a third-year Bolian science cadet, offered her own explanation for these strange occurrences. “It’s just some other Cadets,” Linn stated, a Bolian of a nervous disposition glancing over her shoulder. “Some of them are loud at night, and they bang on things. Completely unwarranted and, as Spol would say, illogical, but I’m not anyone’s mother here.” However, some like Orion Cadet Try, believe that the spirits are real. “One night,” he related as he stacked PADDS onto a tray, looking back and forth. “I swear I locked my window and door. I’m paranoid, or so says my roommate. But around two in the morning, I wake up and my window and door are open. And there’s a woman. Just, a random woman, her hand reached out to me. I reached back and poof. She was gone. I fell asleep and then I woke up and my door was locked window was open though.” Over the years, several cadets have provided evidence of unusual events. One cadet reported ‘spheres of light’ bouncing in the hallways, while another reported a window opening on its own, The most daunting of these was a faint silhouette of someone within a room that appeared almost translucent. Commander Thomas Jones, a science instructor, expressed frustration over how these reports affect cadet morale. “I’m sure the students love Halloween, but for one year could we not terrorise the newcomers with thoughts of possession and the undead?” More information will be reported as additional details come to light. 11. SOL III – The Federated States of Micronesia claimed their third successive Soccer World Cup victory this weekend, smashing records for historical finals with a flourishing spectacle. On a night to remember in Montevideo, two powerhouses of Association Football faced each other in what will surely go down as one of the most dramatic World Cup finals in history. In the sweltering South American heat, hosts Uruguay took on everyone’s pre-tournament pick to lift the trophy – the Federated States of Micronesia. Though, the FSM did not have it all their own way. Uruguay took the lead early in the first half with a terrific headed goal from their talisman striker – Ernesto Castro. The goal unsettled the FSM team, and they were lucky to have left the field trailing by only one at half-time. After the break, the already considerable temperature inside the Luis Suárez Arena continued to rise as both teams challenged their opponents’ goalkeepers skills to the maximum. Jonas Valverde, the official photographer of the Uruguayan national team, was on hand. “The atmosphere was incredible. For a while, our fans really believed we could do it! They were so motivated, shouting from the stands, and even the holographic fans did their part!” Sadly for the host nation, however, it wasn’t to be on this occasion. Goals from Adao and Marz placed FSM 2-1 ahead with less than ten minutes remaining on the clock. Uruguay could draw level, and it was Castro who popped up once again for La Celeste, but as the game approached full-time, defender Newell Ortiz brought down Adao in the box, earning a last-minute penalty. Despite overwhelming protests from the partisan crowd, the Holovid Assistant Referee confirmed they had made contact, and upheld the decision. Ortiz received a green card, meaning he must leave the field of play, but as Uruguay had not used all five substitutes, they quickly replaced him. Ultimately, though, it mattered little, as FSM striker Wilson tucked the penalty away with aplomb. Concluding FSM’s third successive World Cup title, Terrans are wondering if the Islanders’ domination can ever be broken. Uruguayan head coach Dennis Hernández expressed some pride in that all of his players were born on Earth. Conversely, the same was not true for their opponents, five of whose number born on various Terran colonies and one of whom who is half-Klingon. With a United Earth government and the diversity and freedom offered by space travel and the Federation in this modern age, some have questioned the relevance of an exclusively Terran tournament in recent times, but some traditions die hard. FIFA President Richard Argent has argued against it. “No other sport can claim to have done as much to bring the people of this planet together. Was it not football played on the battlefields of World War One during the Christmas truce of 1914? Was it not FIFA that had more member countries than the United Nations at one point? Did El Salvador not wage war on Honduras following the defeat in a soccer match? Wasn’t it a soccer player who organised a cease-fire in the Ivory Coast, bringing a five-year civil-war to a close? Did an exhibition match not bring the 1967 Nigerian Civil War to a stop for two days?” Uruguay was, in fact, the first team to host a World Cup over 450 years ago, and the first team to win it. In celebration of the victory, a new trophy will be commissioned for the next tournament in 2399, as tradition dictates that a team who wins the tournament three times is allowed the keep the current iteration. 12. FNS HQ, MARS — Captain Frederick Thompson, of the civilian transport vessel SS Torquay, has discovered the USS Ahwahnee (NCC-2048) a Constitution-class vessel, floating near the Klingon Federation border. Reported missing, believed destroyed, now due to be recovered. Initial investigations point to the ship encountering an as yet unknown subspace anomaly that killed all hands on board. Other than the tragic loss of life, the Ahwahnee is in near perfect condition and is due to be towed to Earth. “The vessel is in superb condition, considering it’s been floating in space for years,” commented Chief Engineer Daniel Hallstrom of the SS Torquay. “Space is big though. No wonder no one found it.” Starfleet scientists are excited to examine the vessel, believing the logs may show not only the cause of the incident but also provide clues on how to counter it in the future to preserve lives on board for the longest time possible. Captain Peter Drex, holder of the Legion of Honor, the Star Cross and Starfleet Medal of Commendation captained the Ahwahnee. The family of Drex has a history of Starfleet officers in its ranks, including Lieutenant Commander Kayla Drex, recently serving on the USS Eagle (NCC-74659). Starfleet has already sent subspace messages to Drex to inform her of the sad news and hopefully bring a close to the mystery of her Uncle’s disappearance. Early plans are, after a full investigation, to turn the ship into a museum dedicated to “Operation Retrieve”. 13. ALPHA QUADRANT — A missing transfer scow carrying highly valuable Trellium-D has thrown local sector markets and larger trading into flux. The independent haulier, The Fair Winds, was due in port nearly a week ago. Trellium-D, a key component in the insulation of starships, is a challenging mineral to process and rare to find in the raw ore state. As word of the missing Trellium reached miners, ship-builders, unions, mineral dealers, and various other markets playing tradesfolk throughout the Quadrant, Galactic Markets reacted in kind. Prices for still available Trellium-D, and the market price for usually lower-valued Trellium-A, jumped instantly nearly 20 Latintum bars per cubic meter, taking the accepted trading price up from the already steep 15 per cubic meter to triple the amount. As the shipment continues to be unaccounted for, traders warn that more rises are expected. “What is it you hoo-mons say, you have to ‘buy shortly and sell length-wise’?” Trader Abslom Pask said when asked about the immediate forecast for the markets in the coming weeks. “Those who find themselves suddenly wealthy — thanks to some older CURRENT stocks — might want to investigate how they can make these longer odds work for them across an extended span of time once those stocks dwindle, you see.” Details continue to emerge as both A and D futures again surged even today, but we will bring you more on this story as it develops. 14. ANDORIA — A large avalanche in the northern reaches of the Andorian Highlands has trapped a team of four scientists, all now missing in the snowdrift. Search and Rescue party launches. The team, led by Dr. Talak of the Andoria Imperial Academy, a renown geophysicist, was surprised by an immense avalanche that at its peak brought forth winds of little over 110 km/h. The four men, of which two Andorians, a Tellarite, and a Human remain buried beneath the sizeable amount of snow that came from the avalanche. Investigation is ongoing, with the aid of a Starfleet search team. The captain of the search party, Biochemist and Mountain Rescue expert Dr Nathan Boss, brief officials today on updates from the mountainside. “Communications are still non-existent.” Dr. Boss spoke at his first report to the press. “Data shows that they lost all means of radio signalling from the Avalanche’s enormous snowcap. It is uncertain whether the four are still alive. We will make our best efforts in finding them.” The interest of Starfleet in the investigation of Dr. Talak’s team accident surprised Andoria Police officials. However, Dr. Boss showed that while Talak had ascended under Academy orders, Starfleet Science is interested in the results Dr. Talak may have gained. Losing Talak is therefore a back blow into several ongoing research projects, specifically into Andoria’s troubled tectonic activity. “Andoria has seen shifts in its tectonic outlay for several years now. It is important for Andorians and Starfleet to know the implications of these tectonic shifts, especially pertaining to natural disasters such as quakes and volcanic eruptions. Seismological surveys show that the mantle of Andoria is presenting several signs of hazardous shifts. Avalanches like this might become more of a problem.” Dr. Ivask, an Andorian specialised in the species anatomy, had reservations when asked by FNS what the team’s chances of survival were. “Although we are very sufficient in surviving at very low temperatures, the lack of air might be what will endanger the lives of Dr. Talak and his peers. Even if they have found shelter in a natural cave, which would not be unlikely, the lack of food and water might still break them up. The best hope lies not only in finding them fast but also in getting them out of their spot safely and then assess the damage to the system.” Dr. Boss has already requested for two Starfleet shuttles to survey from the air, using their sensors to detect any life signs beneath the ice. Andorian search teams are also being assembled, with the Academy sending their own investigators alongside Starfleet. More on this story as it develops. 16. DAVLOS — Members of the Orion Syndicate attacked Starfleet Science vessel USS Zeeman, an Intrepid-class explorer, in one of a series of attacks throughout Federation space. Bearing toward a research mission into the Orion Nebula, they ambushed the ship on approach near Davlos. According to eyewitnesses from the Zeeman, a squadron of four attack ships coordinated a flanked assault and opened fire upon contact. Consistent with other accounts, Chief Engineer Agarton explained that the warp nacelles had suffered extensive damage from the encounter with the Orions. Under siege from boarders, who disabled the shields and beam aboard the ship, the security teams thwarted two boarding parties. Following the initial attack and repel, the Orions retreated. Vulcan Captain of the Zeeman, T’Chimmar, reported that the pirates had stolen some ship’s scientific devices and mixed canisters of anti-matter from stowage, but nothing substantial has been noted on the log files. “Our calculated risk factor of encountering the Orion Syndicate within the nebula was considerable,” explained T’Chimmar in the after action report. “However, the nature of our mission to Davlos was not to be disrupted. The theft is noted and Federation Security is underway with an investigation.” The unprovoked attack and reports are under analysis by Starfleet Command, however, it is only one in a multitude of boarding raids conducted by the Orion Syndicate within recent months. Acts of piracy throughout the region have increased at alarming rates, prompting Starfleet to discuss alternative measures for prevention and protection of vessels within the area. “There is an increasing danger in the outlying systems of Orion or other pirate attacks,” stated Rear Admiral Walter Morgan, leading the research into the Orion Question. “Armed patrols are under consideration.” The post Orion Syndicate Attacks Increase Alarmingly As USS Zeeman Raided appeared first on Federation News Service. 17. BAJOR — As Bajor enters national mourning for Heerma Eza, the FNS celebrates the life of the Occupation refugee with a look back at one of the most venerated holonovels of our time, Symbols of the Ships. The Dominion War of 2375 left an unmistakable scar on the people of Bajor, none less so on Bajoran conflict veteran Heerma Eze. Surviving both her parents and children, Eze has never forgotten the deep grooves that came with the occupation, and funnelled those energies into a harrowing holonovel reverenced in literary circles. While there are few unaware of the holonovels existence — Academies throughout the galaxy have widely recommended the novel as an addendum to curriculum concerning the Occupation of Bajor — at first glance, the novel seeks to plunge the reader into the status of a Bajoran refugee, fleeing the crisis, while the real premise of the story runs roots deeper than that. “My determination to bring this story to the broader public was not out of hatred or anger at the Dominion, nor the Cardassians,” explained Eze, during an interview before her death. “I wanted to show the courage of the people, the grit of the resistance, show that hope is difficult to maintain when all looks lost, and sometimes, just sometimes, we win.” Some have claimed the novel is a classic undertaking of judicious dread, beginning with the Occupation and ending with an uncertain fate for the reader. Engaging in a thorough play-through is not for the fainthearted. The ambience of the program is especially significant — from the occasional tormented whistling of bombs to the touching Bajoran death chant — the reader does not expect entertainment, but a heartbreaking education. Because of the very nature of the realism incorporated into the novel, some survival holodeck programs have taken inspiration from the tale. Symbols of the Ships remains as a belletristic standpoint in the Occupation’s retelling. A special remastered edition will be available for a short time. 18. CICIGAR, MARAVEL — After his reign of 54 years ended two weeks ago, Emperor Yongkiyaha’s death has inspired an outpouring of grief and tributes for the late departed Emperor on Maravel itself and across the Federation as people remember a man famous for his conspicuous dedication to public service and his inscrutable personality. Standing on her street corner, Seta Tsuru, who just celebrated her 97th birthday, making her the same age as the Emperor, held a straight-backed, but reverent pose as she waited for the funeral procession to pass, holding her black umbrella aloft only to spare her great-grandchildren the rain. “The Emperor saw us through everything and never complained, it was his duty and he shouldered it alone, the least we can do is come out in the rain to wish him farewell.” Mrs. Tsuru’s sentiments were echoed by the over two million mourners that lined the rainy route of the funeral cortege. The funeral cortege started in the Imperial Palace and proceeded through the streets of Cicigar to the Celestial Terrace. Here the elaborate funeral liturgy of the Maravel Emperors was performed before over 15,000 guests including President Narala, the First Minister of Bajor, the Speaker of the Klingon High Council and members of various royal families from across the Federation in addition to the full Legislative and State Affairs Councils of Maravel. The quasi-religious ceremony included blessings and benedictions from eight of Maravel’s religious communities, including those that historically represent the “Five Faiths” of the “Five Peoples” of Maravel: Traditional Manchu Shamanism, Shintoism, Vajrayana Bhuddism, Confucianism and Russian Orthodoxy. The Eight Commanders of the Eight Banners served as pal-bearers for the Emperor’s cypress palanquin, placing it in the Pagoda of Heavenly Fortune at the center of the Celestial Terrace, where all previous Emperors of Maravel had their funerals. Gathered in black and sheltered by white tents, the massive crowd surrounding the Pagoda looked on as the Emperor was eulogized by his childhood friend Telbuge Banyi while they brought traditional offerings forth to the altar. In a series of shorter addresses, the Prime Minister of Maravel An Seong-Gi, the President of the Grand Council Aloan Asaji and the Emperor’s son and heir Crown Prince Hiowan all gave remarks on Emperor Yongkiyaha’s life and reign that saw Maravel through times of war, political tumult, fiscal mismanagement and reconstruction and triumph after all of it. “He was strength, dignity and virtue,” said Grand Councilor Asaji. “His was a largeness of spirit that he would be the first to say we should all hope to see again in our time, but one I know will always come with the memory of the man who so defined the word ‘duty’.” “We often assume it that my father only had one expression, that of the granite regality that he believed came with his office. But he would be the first to say that he didn’t have just one expression… he had two. They just looked alike.” Crown Prince Hiowan said of his father’s legendarily controlled and stately bearing that many looked to as a patriarchal, immovable symbol of calm in the more turbulent years of his reign. Despite his detached exterior, Emperor Yongkiyaha commitment to his people and desire to be at one with them was also remembered, his courtly and dispassionate demeanor said to be not an elevation of self but his elevation of the position of sovereign of Maravel, traditionally said to be a Son of Heaven. Taking place midway through the month-long period of mourning, the funeral will be the last major state event of the Yongkiyaha Era before Crown Prince Hiowan takes the throne and ushers in a new era that many are expecting will differ greatly from his father’s. A personally charismatic and magnetic man, Hiowan is more like his vivacious mother, the Empress Anna than his father and many on Maravel still remember the pomp and fanfare that surrounded the Crown Prince’s marriage to Aurilda St-Cyr seven years ago, in contrast to the elaborate but solemn affair that was his parents wedding. Following the funeral, the procession continued outside Cicigar for the private burial of the Emperor at the Imperial Mausoleum, where only family and selected guests were in attendance. These private ceremonies and rituals continued for several hours late into the evening before the Imperial Family returned to the Palace, finally laying the Emperor who thought it was his sole duty to shoulder the burdens of his people, to finally rest with his ancestors. 19. FNS reporter Dresdon P. Mitchell explores the modern issues concerning rituals and rites of Vulcans. In a previous special report, I discussed how the modern youth of Vulcan are focusing more on their career advances, rather than partaking in their seven-year mating ritual, pon farr and how they’re combating the neurochemical imbalances associated with the ritual. However, is it just medicine that’s allowing them to fight these urges? Because of the environment and temperature slowly falling after the atomic war, a Vulcan meteorologist has been studying with a Human pharmacist in determining these unnatural weather patterns. They feel that the enzymes or amino acid enzymes in the new Terran plant affected the chemical reactions and caused an imbalance with what the young adult Vulcans are using to combat their urges. “After the atomic war, the temperature has dropped over the years and with the fallout, growing Terran plants on Vulcan has changed the genealogy makeup,” said Selok, a Betazoid/Vulcan hybrid Genealogist said. The older generation is rejecting these claims as false and illogical since they haven’t refused the ritual. When asked if they have tried the plant, they refused to comment on the matter for they feel that pon farr should not be discussed so freely. A Vulcan Neurologist created a prototype to act as a substitute, which is a responsive neuro-destimulation device that might help both sides of the quarreling generations come to a more logical agreement. The doctor informed me of this new technology when she turned toward a holographic display of the process where she placed a small device under the scalp. “This device senses when the cortical levels rise and fall causing serotonin levels to become unbalanced which the brain’s regulatory system shuts down.” Doctor T’pra, the neurologist said as the display continued forward in motion. “A brief electrical pulse stops the cortical levels almost immediately, right when it rises to prevent the sudden drop.” Initial tests on patients were coming up with non conclusive results because the device wasn’t able to bring the levels to the balance which would cause microbes to trigger pon farr prematurely. As there were many ways to prematurely trigger pon farr, so adding another way for it to happen only causes raised unfascinating eyebrows of concern. Meanwhile, the young revolutionists have started a campaign with the pharmaceutical companies to get the Terran plant infused within neural transducers and marketed out to the masses. “It only seems logical and practical for us,” said another Vulcan, who wished to remain anonymous, such as the first one in the previous article. “Trying to persuade a Vulcan with these urges to not act on pon farr with me without my consent is not agreeable. With these alternative medicines, our people can advance on new scientific discoveries.” The post Are Modern Vulcans Refusing To Engage In Ritualistic Pon Farr To Pursue Career Goals? appeared first on Federation News Service. 21. CICIGAR, MARAVEL — The Imperial Household announced early this morning that Emperor Yongkiyaha-Shenxu of Maravel has died following a long battle with an illness now identified as Fry’s Disease. After a reign of over fifty years, Maravel’s Emperor Yongkiyaha, also known by his personal name that he carried as Crown Prince: Shenxu, passed away earlier today at 97. The Prime Minister of Maravel, An Seong-Gi broke the news at a special address early this morning, eulogizing the beloved Emperor for his commitment to both his people and the entire Federation displayed in a lifetime of public service. “The name of our dear departed Emperor will live forever in the annals of history as a name synonymous with humility in the face of duty, service before the self and moral rigor in a world sometimes ambivalent to it. The Era that bares his name will forever be known as a time of great trials but also carry the memory of many great triumphs despite them.” Emperor Yongkiyaha’s 54-year reign encompassed some of the most tumultuous events of the past century including Wars with Cardassia, the Tzenkethi, and the Dominion, the Destruction of Romulus along with several domestic crises on Maravel itself like the collapse of the Akitori Government, the I-Shen Insurrection, the Bajoran Refugee Crisis and personal tragedies like the death of his youngest son Prince Fiyanggū. Through all of it Emperor Yongkiyaha maintained his famous stoicism, his way of preserving Imperial Dignity as a symbol of stability through trying times. This stern, fatherly exterior is what most on Maravel and in the wider Federation will remember about Emperor Yongkiyaha, something many admired him for. “Maravelians, young and old, have lived through very turbulent times over the Emperor’s reign. The Emperor, the late Emperor, was like a big father to us,” said Taketa Ryutaro, the President of the Federation Chamber of Commerce. Born the eldest son of Emperor Badarangga, Emperor Yongkiyaha, then known as Prince Shenxu, lived the entirety of his early life cloistered in the Imperial Palace in Cicigar before undertaking his first public duties at 13. For the next five years he made military inspections, opened hospitals, visited the sick and attended charity functions before he followed in his Grandfather’s and Great-Grandfather’s footsteps to attend Starfleet Academy and become a Starfleet Officer. Even then, the Prince’s reserved demeanor and rigid composure were noted by everyone who met him, as was his commitment to his own personal excellence and sense of duty. He would serve in Starfleet for twenty years before resigning his commission to take up the office of Crown Prince to his father. It was during these years after his career in Starfleet and his own accession to the throne that Prince Shenxu met his wife and future Empress Anna Rzhevskaya, known affectionately as “Anya”. Markedly different in temperament from her husband, “Princess Anya” presented herself as warm and approachable, even boisterous but with elegance and bearing befitting of a future consort. His choice of wife was not without controversy however, and it was long rumored that the late Empress Meisho almost disowned her son after Princess Anya did handsprings at a state dinner. Regardless of their differences, the marriage was a happy one that produced five children. When Emperor Badarangga abdicated considering his declining health, Crown Prince Shenxu succeeded him, taking the name “Yongkiyaha” at his coronation. His reign would see Maravel through some of the most trying periods in its history, but through it all Emperor Yongkyaha never let down his dispassionate exterior, serving as a beacon of stability to his people and the entire Federation. Today, on Maravel, the planet prepares to enter a month long state of mourning before the accession of Crown Prince Hiowan. Ostentatious decorations are being removed from storefronts, though they remain open, and many industries are slowing production as a means of tribute to the late Emperor. In contrast to the man’s trademark exterior, many citizens of Maravel are teary eyed at the departure of their late beloved leader. While subdued, crowds of mourners have gathered outside the Imperial Palace to pay their respects, with masses of Noble Orchids, the symbol on the Imperial Seal of Maravel, beginning to pile up outside. Some sees the outpouring of emotion as the signal of a new era, one that will officially begin at the end of the month after the elders of the Aisin Gioro clan, the ruling family of Maravel, confirm the Crown Prince’s accession. While some have called for the abolition of the monarchy like they did at the end of Emperor Badarangga’s reign, these remain a small if vocal segment of Maravel society which by-and-large is not ready to see the end of its ancient monarchy which traces its heritage back to the Qing and Jin Dynasties of China on Earth. The funeral of Emperor Yongkiyaha is supposed to be an elaborate affair in that tradition and will take place early next week on the only official day of state mourning, after which they will put the late Emperor to rest in the Imperial Mausoleum outside Cicigar. With elections scheduled for early next year, the accession of a new Emperor truly marks the beginning of a new era for Maravel and not just in name. It remains to be seen what tenor Crown Prince Hiowan will bring to his father’s office and how Maravel politics, for so long moored by an unshakable rock of indomitable calm, will react to the loss of Emperor Yongkiyaha but for now, the planet mourns its fallen Emperor that saw them through so much and whom many looked to as a father. 22. SKRAL RIVER, QO’NOS — Celebrated for their bloodwine and chech’tluth, a new beverage is taking the Klingon market by storm and filtering into Federation bars. Blended and single malt whiskeys derived at the craft distillery in Skral River are highly sought already. Consumers are cautioned, however, that like most Klingon brewed beverages, qul bIQ, as it has been dubbed by the distillers, is much stronger that whiskey distilled on Earth and elsewhere because of the more hardy Klingon grains and hops that grow in the Skral River Valley on the Klingon homeworld, which gives it a deeper hue than most whiskeys in the galaxy. Tumek, head brewmaster of the distillery, was proud of his brew. “It is a proud day for the house of Toloth. This warrior’s drink will be consumed during many tales of honor and glorious battle for generations to come.” One establishment on Lightside Station in the Aavaro Wilds saw orders skyrocket when first started serving the Klingon spirit, constantly running out of it. Sean O’Callahan of O’Callahan’s Pub on Lightside Station in the Aavaro Wilds had this to say about the newest member of the whiskey family. “Aye, ‘tis strong all right.” The Irish owner of the establishment said in an interview for “Galactic Spirits: magazine. “Can’t tell ya how many bar donnybrooks have been foiled because of it. And tha people can’t seem ta get enough.” Importers, especially the Ferengi, are already clamoring for exclusive contracts with the Klingon High Council for the widely sought after spirit. The Federation Medical Council is still analyzing the ingredients for its effect on non-Klingon species for compatibility. 23. TAU CETI PRIME — Federation scientists are keen to begin their explorations of a newly discovered geological and anthropological hotspot beneath the expansive glacier ice caps of Tai Centi Prime n collaboration with the Kaferians. Beneath the thousands of glaciers covering the landscape of the planet’s mountain regions lies a geological and anthropological mystery Federation scientists have pondered for decades, and Kaferians for as long as their written records extend into history. The Kaferians – an insectoid species and Federation member for many years inhabiting the sister planet Tau Ceti III, or Kohath-Seredi – have welcomed the effort to delve deeper into the planet’s origins. Unable to scan beneath the vast frozen vistas of oceanic ice developed over many millennia, new leaps in advanced technologies may now make the exploration a reality. Involving a Federation-wide collaboration effort to discover the mysteries of the deep permafrost sheets, using the best in Tellarite and Andorian technologies for the processes of terraforming and ice cutting respectively, scientists and explorers alike are already enthusiastic about the discoveries waiting for them on the continent. Fossil evidence from earlier excavations on melted ice has showed that there is increasing indications of a pre-civilisation that could have inhabited Tai Centi Prime before the continent submerged into the dry deep freeze and perfectly preserved plant life showing the flash freeze which occurred approximately 60 million years ago. Kaferian scientists have expressed a wide interest in the planet before, but lacked the technology to begin a formative effort. Presenting her theories of mass extinction and migration of her peoples from the originating planet of Tau Ceti Prime to their home of Kohath-Seredi, Director Sorllaith of the Kaferia Institute of Natural Science garnered much support at the previous New Horizons conference, and has since spoken at the ongoing conference taking place on Deluvia IV, Deluvia System. “This is an exciting development for our people!” exclaimed Doctor Sorllaith, Director of Science at the Kaferia Institute of Natural Science. “Once the ice caps melted, we discovered beneath a gigantic layer of ancient mud and seafloor, which has perfectly preserved fossils and microfossils that could establish the missing link between the origin of our species and our established a home on Kohath-Seredi. Our excavations have revealed some secrets of our long and incredible past before, but the opportunity to see where we originated from is an incredible breakthrough.” Applying highly calibrated sensor data from scientific vessels orbiting the planet, loaned by Starfleet Command for the effort, and the sharpest sensor pallets available on the ground, the first discoveries are already beginning to appear. The task is not an easy one. In some places, the ice extends up as far as five miles from the sea-level and large pieces of the formed sheets are disappearing into the ocean every day. The newly released water has caused the formation of dangerous lakes and rivers across the surface of the planet and crust, directly affecting the settled inhabitants and threatening the scientific outpost on the southern continent. “There is a delicate balance you have to strike, between how far you can drill into the crust without disrupting the natural order,” explained Doctor Narsh Chashnonch, Chief Researcher for the Tellarite Exploration Taskforce. “We have conducted thorough research already and will continue to do so on the surface before we make any effort to cut through it.” The exploration team will begin their initial survey and investigation, touching down at the outpost in the south and, utilising specially adapted Argo vehicles on loan from Starfleet, the team have begun preparations to travel across the land to set up their remote field camp amongst the northern ice. 24. ANDOR — A Horta citizen of the United Federation of Planets is suing the Andorian government after being refused clearance to make planetfall on the Andorian surface. Hurrurrn, the plaintiff in question, contends that on Stardate 239602.01, while undertaking a tour of the Federation as part of a vacation, he attempted to transport to Andor for a guided tour. The tour itself, and all relevant permissions, received authorisation well in advance, but during final clearance, Andorian Municipal Transporter Control ordered the transport halted, preventing Hurrurrn from beaming down to the moon. “Not was concerned I,” reported Hurrurrn. “Public systems slow”. However, according to the lawsuit, after nearly half a standard hour of delay, AMTC hailed Hurrurrn’s vessel, the Flaming Obsidian, and informed the crew that the transport would be impossible. When pressed for an explanation, the chief of the AMTC insisted that, because of a heat wave that had affected Andor during the previous two weeks, allowing an entity of such enormous heat to alight upon the already compromised ice of Andor would be both dangerous and irresponsible. “Nonsense is,” continued Hurrurrn. “Can be hot I. Not need to be”. Despite repeated attempts to explain the situation, and to assure AMTC that he posed no threat and reach his destination, Hurrurrn was blocked at every turn. Eventually, to keep to its pre-defined schedule, they forced the Flaming Obsidian to move onto its next destination, Sol III. Hurrurrn is demanding reparations for the slight against him and other Hortas, and the aggravation and inconvenience of the incident. “Is Federation,” Hurrurrn stated. “Is good. This bad”. Details about Horta biology are limited, primarily because of the extraordinary nature of their physiology. It has been established that the “heat” described in the report stems from a chemical reaction, and can be expelled or withheld at will. To say that Hortakind are “hot” creatures in the manner described by the defendant in this case is a gross mischaracterization. “Though Andor has been experiencing a variety of climate-related heatwaves, the presence of Mr. Hurrurrn would not have been detrimental, inconvenient or dangerous,” presented Vishlin th’Shrinta, chief of Andor’s Weather and Climatology Department. “This incident should not have occurred.” The post Horta Sues Andorian Government Over Discrimination appeared first on Federation News Service. 25. ZENBRE, ATREA IV — Blessings of Zenbre, Atrea IV. Stocks continued the long rally today on reports from the shipbuilding industry. The ZSAQ on Atrea IV closed 1250 points higher, or 4.5%, at 27,778. Novan Standard Ratings closed 450 points higher, or 5.5%, at 8182. This rally started with the quarterly report by Eskellion Shipyards, one of the leading commercial shipyard producers, and continued with more reports from the shipbuilding sector of the economy, and continued with several merchant-guilds releasing guidance intimating they expected higher profits in Q3. With the recent increase in production of the class HKM heavily armed merchant ship, and recovery of several merchant lines operating in the Federation’s verge, and continuing action by Starfleet in Operation Safe Harbor, the markets have seen a rally for the last quarter. “Armed merchant ships capable of recovering the carrying capacity of the Federation means we can get the goods our citizens need and want where and when they want,” read a spokesentient for Eskellion. Guidance for Q3 of 2397 projects that the growth of privately armed companies will make it one of the fastest-growth sectors. However, a developing trend in the Assembly may cut into growth as increasingly, planets are apprehensive about the possibility of turning to mercenary work, leading to neutral outlooks on those stocks. In the meantime, continued political unrest in the Shoals leads to stocks for dilithium and benamite mining companies to fall and increased calls for more action by Federation authorities from the mining lobby. “Mining in the Shoals is becoming increasingly more dangerous with local regulation choking profits and pirate forces increasing their depredations.”, Acin Smith, CEO of Ragnar’s Mining Operations, stated in an announcement to the press. “We are advocating for more Akira and Defiant classes to be issued to the Federation’s Nineteenth Fleet, and especially in the Shoals. We are grateful for what Starfleet has done, but we call for more action.” The post Markets on Atrea IV surge as Eskellion Shipyards Lead Rally appeared first on Federation News Service.
