  1. Glad to have you with us, and welcome to our community! Introduce yourself to our members by posting a reply and saying hello. Below are some ideas for things to tell us about yourself. Post as much or as little as you're comfortable with -- only forum members can actually read the threads here, so outside folks can't see what you post! What's your real first name? Where do you live? (General area! City or state, even!) How did you find our group? What kind of work do you do? I'll start! I'm Jordan. My character name is "Tristan Wolf" and I founded this group in 1994 on AOL. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I work in political advocacy. Here's a pictures of my dog Baxter! To reply, just click the black button that says "reply to this topic" or just start typing in the box at the bottom of the page!
  2. Let's get down to business! This is an open thread to introduce your character. Don't worry about formatting -- just be creative and write in a way that's comfortable for you. You'll learn how to use our official format once training starts. For now, let's just have fun! Here's how it works: your character has just finished four years at the Academy and has arrived at StarBase 118 for their "Cadet Cruise." (i.e.- your training program!) Your transport has arrived a few hours before you're due to report to the holodeck for the briefing. Maybe you want to wander around the massive commercial sector, or something else entirely? You'll want to start with your character. Be creative about showing us who they are -- species, name, and perhaps a description of what they look like. Think back to the fiction books you've read, and recall how authors introduce you to the main character of the story. You might find this tutorial "How to introduce a character" to be useful. Ready to go? Just click the black button that says "reply to this topic", or just start typing in the box at the bottom of this page!
  3. For this year, following along with the themes of the recent newly released series of Star Trek: Picard, and the current situation many of us are facing at home, the chosen theme is one of Star Trek's most beloved storytelling mechanics — Echoes of the Past. "The view screen snaps into focus on an impossible sight, and a voice from your past speaks to you and you alone..." How would your character react in this situation? What's going through their mind? What scene immediately pops into your head? Is there a word-fire kindling? Does it transport you somewhere? If so, bust out the virtual pen and paper, brew that Earl Grey and get cracking! One judge will be chosen from each ship to help select the winner. Rules & Guidelines: Word count should be a minimum of 300 and maximum of 3000. Members are welcome to submit solo stories, or team up with a buddy to submit a collaborative epic. Your submission should be in the format of a short story. Prose, not sim formatting. (See here for examples.) All members are welcome to submit entries for the community to read, but only those from active simmers will be reviewed by the judging panel for the final winners selection. Submissions are, by default, non-canon – if you find a way to shoehorn this into your own backstory, you're free to use it if you wish, but certainly not a requirement. To that end, you can create whatever characters make sense for the story. You don't have to use or reference any of your current characters. Also, rank is not an issue here – write as an Ensign or a Captain, civilian, whatever makes sense for your story! And you're free to use characters that you've already written for in sim, but please don't include anyone else's. Submit your story directly into the first post of a new thread. Use the following format for the thread title: [Primary Character Name(s) of author(s)]: "My Story's Interesting Title" Tristan Wolf: "Five Ways to End Your Starfleet Career" All stories must be submitted by Sunday, May 17 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Good luck!
  4. Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery kicks off January 17, 2019! We'll start this one thread for now to see how much discussion it generates and if we need to split into individual episode discussion threads, we can, but I think keeping it all in one thread should be manageable and easy for others to flag as filled with spoilers if they're worried about that. So, let's begin... RED ALERT! SPOILERS BELOW! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
  5. Nominations for the 2019 Awards Ceremony open on Monday, May 20 at 12:15am Pacific Time and close on Monday, June 10 at 11:45pm Pacific Time. If this is your awards ceremony with us, welcome! This is a tradition that dates back to 1996, wherein we honor the people of the fleet who are simming really well, or contributing OOC. Back in the "old days," we would gather the entire fleet onto one email list (we were a lot smaller then...) and sim together an award presentation; now we do things a bit differently. Here's how it works today: Everyone in the fleet submits nominations for consideration. The group staff (ship COs, EC members, etc.) review the nominations. Each ship has their own awards presentation on their OOC email list for awards in the General Awards category. Award in this category can be given to one person on each ship. Then, we have a fleetwide presentation of awards here on the forums. Awards in the Duty Post, Special, Staff, and Length of Service categories are presented over the course of three days. One person in the fleet can receive each of the Duty Post, Special, and Staff categories. How to nominate: We rely on each and every member of the fleet to submit nominations so we can recognize the best members of our community who are putting in the time and effort to make this a fun place to be. So we need your help! If you don't nominate your peers and mentors for awards, they won't get recognized. We want to encourage everyone to be really free with their nominations – there's no penalty in putting in a nomination that doesn't ultimately get the award. But ships that have fewer nominations tend to end up having fewer award winners – so don't be shy! Multiple nominations from members of a ship for any given award can help send a signal to reviewers that a certain person is really deserving, but also one really great nomination can be the deciding factor for someone to win an award. Follow these simple instructions to get started: Check out the wiki Hall of Honor to see the list of awards and learn more: https://wiki.starbase118.net/wiki/index.php?title=Award Consider who you want to nominate. Then do a quick check on the list of past award winners to make sure they haven't won the award before: https://wiki.starbase118.net/wiki/index.php?title=List_of_Award_Recipients (You can sort the table by clicking on the column headers, or you can use your browser's "Find" feature to quickly find a character anywhere on the page – on PC, use CTRL+F, on Mac use ⌘+F.) If the person hasn't won the award before, head to the nomination form: https://www.starbase118.net/members/personnel/forms/award-nomination-panel/ Enter your information and select the award. Then write a nomination reason. For some awards, we'll ask you for a link to a sim if you have one readily available that helps justify your nomination. Don't stress out about finding a sim, but if you have one, it could help. If you feel really confident about your award nomination, chat with others on your ship who might also feel the same way and recommend they make a similar nomination! Writing a good nomination: Remember, your nominations are going up against other nominations from your ship (for General category awards), or from the entire fleet (Duty Post, Special, Staff category awards). So the better you make your case for why your nomination should win, the more likely it is that it will help your nominee end up getting the award. Last year, we put together some nominations that helped nominees in 2017 win. You can check them out for some inspiration: https://www.starbase118.net/2018/award-nomination-examples/ (We'll post some more from last year – 2018 – in the next few days.) All that being said, don't go overboard! If the case for a nominee self-evident, or clearly shown by a sim, it's okay to write less in your explanation and allow the evidence to stand on its own. How to get a sim link: You can grab a link to a sim by going to your ship's Google Group archive (the link is in the footer of every sim). Awards Ceremony schedule: June 27, Thursday: PRESENTATION: Introduction, General Awards June 29, Friday: PRESENTATION: Special and Length of Service Awards June 29, Saturday: PRESENTATION: Staff Awards June 30, Sunday: PRESENTATION: Duty Post Awards, finale/acknowledgments, complete ceremony posted on the Community News, in an announcement to the fleet via email, and on the wiki. Questions? Head to the Discord chatroom, where we have the #awards2019 room where you can ask questions of other members. Or, ask your FO or CO for help – they're happy to answer questions and have been through multiple ceremonies!

  8. Hey folks, Wanted to make sure you all saw this Graphics Contest retrospective by Capt. Sal Taybrim, which we posted on the news a few days ago. Although the contest has ended, we wanted to feature the winners of this contest and thank everyone who participated, including Capt. Jalana Rajel, who originated and facilitated the contest.
  9. Welcome to our first June ceremony, marking our 20th anniversary of this awards ceremony tradition. While our group was founded in 1994, our first ceremony was held in 1996, bringing together the whole fleet for an In Character celebration. Since then, we’ve seen the addition of dozens of new awards, a transition to Out Of Character presentations, and in this latest change, a move from the traditional December presentation to June, to coincide with the yearly anniversary of our founding. It’s time to turn your heads to the red carpet as we begin this week-long event, where we’ll present to the fleet six categories of awards: Duty Post: Honoring the best simmer from each duty post Special: Honoring specific aspects of simming or OOC work Length of Service: Honoring members who have been with us for a year, all the way up to 10 years and more Staff: Honoring the work of our fleet’s staff members General/Ship awards: Honoring the members who won this year’s General, or ship-based awards Featured missions: Honoring the best missions and sims from this past year Also, in this thread, I want to introduce this year's Award's Facilitator, Fleet Captain Renos! The job of the Awards Facilitator is one that involves an incredible amount of work, from helping to pull together an Awards Committee (which reviews all the Duty Post, and Special nominees and selects the winners), to compiling all of the nominations and making sure they get to the right people, and then helping to manage all of the materials and assets required to make this ceremony a success! It's hard to imagine just how much copying, pasting, and collating is involved until you've got the mantle on your shoulders Renos (OOC: James) has been working tirelessly over the past few weeks to help bring everything together. 1,000 thanks to him for all that! 👏👏👏👏👏 We hope you've all donned your fanciest outfits – it's time to celebrate
  10. Attention, fleet mates! With the recent awards ceremony still fresh in our minds, an exciting new section of the wiki has just opened: the StarBase 118 Hall of Honor! Under the directive of Fleet Admiral Wolf, the awards and service ribbons pages have been completely transformed into a new comprehensive and integrated section of the wiki that serves to recognize the achievements of our fellow members. New Menus You can navigate through the awards and service ribbons through the new menus at the top of each page. Highlighting Recent Recipients Award recipients are given more prominence. For instance, the most recent award recipients are displayed right on the award overview pages such as the duty post awards, staff awards, etc. (For those wiki-curious folks, the recent recipient data for these pages is pulled directly from the individual award pages themselves, using transclusion similar to how the Fleet Roster works, meaning these pages won't need to be updated). New Individual Award Pages We hope the new Hall of Honor reflects the level of distinction that award recipients have earned. To be awarded a "fleet level" award should be something to be proud of, and the old table listings lacked the proper recognition. A full comprehensive table listing is still available for easy record keeping, especially come next awards season, but each award now has its own page. When you click on the link to an award (or the image of an award on a person's ribbon rack or display case from their bio page), you will be taken directly to that award's own page. If the award is a fleet level award (meaning only one person is usually given the award per year) or a length of service award, you will see all the recipients displayed like award plaques on a wall. For instance, here's what the page for the Rising Star Award looks like. Interactive Plaques Each plaque is interactive. Click on the name or picture to go to that person's bio. Click on the year to read the full awards ceremony from that year. Click on the writer ID number to go the user page of that character's writer. Comments, questions, and suggestions are welcome!
  11. Welcome to Top Sims Contest of 2015! All announcements for the entire 2015 contest will be posted in this thread. The Top Sims contest allows members of our fleet to be recognized by their peers for superior writing ability. Unlike the Writing Challenges, this contest allows only sims that have been used in a current plot to be considered. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES You can submit ANY sim -- from your ship, or another ship. You can submit your own sims if you wish. All sims are welcome, including staff (Captain, First Officer, etc.) sims. The sim must be written with good spelling, good grammar, and be in the correct format. Check to make sure that the sim is readable. You can click the "Edit" button to fix any issues, but don't delay -- the window to open a post closes after a short while. COMMENTING ON A SIM Everyone is welcome to comment on submitted sims. If you're going to provide constructive criticism, you are required to employ the "Hamburger" criticism method: first, mention something you like; second, something you didn't like; third, something else you liked. If you just want to provide praise, no hamburger method required! Commenters who are rude, unfair, or overzealous in their commenting will be barred from future comments in the contest forum, and will have their actions brought to the attention of their CO. 16. That's right! Beginning with the September and October Writing Challenge, we have available for you a downloadable PDF that contains all of the entries from the Writing Challenge round. Winners will get a special write-up on the first page. Now you can add the stories to your computer or mobile device and read them at your leisure! Our first compilation is available right here!
  17. This poll will close at Midnight (EST) on Wednesday, Just 19th. This is a run-off poll, where our members will choose from the top sims of the second set of six rounds of the contest to find the best sim that will proceed to the final round of the contest. Please read the six sims below, which were chosen by a panel of judges (one from each ship) to find the best sims from each round of Set 2: Captain Reynolds: The Sole SurvivorLt JG Ben Livingston - Brotherly Love PNPC Sherana & Cmdr. Tal Tel-ar - Sparring Match PNPC Matthew Brice - Federation Man, Galaxy Defender PNPC Unky - Umm. This one kind of got away from me, actually.... Lt. Cmdr. Katy Orman - Clashing Once you've read the sims, vote in the poll above. Choose the sim that's the best written, most evocative, makes you feel the most, and generally deserves to be considered as one of our fleet's very best. If any crew is found "stuffing the ballot" -- having everyone on the crew vote for the same sim to ensure it proceeds to the final round -- that crew will be eliminated from the contest for the remainder of the year. Good luck to everyone.
  18. Please use this thread for any general discussion or questions about the Top Sims Contest. Do not post praise or criticism for submitted sims in this thread. Instead, post those praise or criticisms in the submitted sim's own thread.
