  2. So I thought this might be a fun little discussion. What is your most unpopular opinion about Star Trek? Perhaps something you like that everyone else hates or visa versa? Mine would be the final episode of Enteprise 'These Are the Voyages...', so many people seem to hate it but I think it's great. I thought it was smart doing a time jump, Enterprise didn't feel ready to end with where they had got at that point in the show and it allows for stories to take place both before and after the episode. I thought having it be a holodeck activity for Riker was clever for three reasons: - Firstly it gave everyone the opportunity to have some meaningful screentime, not an easy feat considering it was a regular length episode. - Secondly I like that Riker was inspired by the Enterprise crew to do the right thing. - Thirdly, combined with the time jump it makes it easy to pick up stories before or after, it's a holodeck program, it's not going to be 100% accurate so you can explain away any plot holes either with the episode itself or created by any other stories. Picking up on that second point, TNG is pretty much the seen as the standard bearer for Star Trek. Where as some see it as disrespectful to the Enterprise cast and crew I saw it as a great tribute, the Enterprise crew inspiring Riker to do the right thing and the reverence that Riker and to some degree Troi showed towards the Enterprise crew and their role in what would ultimately become the Federation. It connected Enterprise to the larger Star Trek family and in-universe showed how all those that came after them were inspired by the adventures of the NX-01. It was also the first time in all of Enterprise and much of Star Trek where I was actually worried about what would happen to a character. Trip is far from being my favourite Star Trek character, Archer isn't near the top of my list either but the episode did a great job of building suspense and making me think one or both of their lives were actually at risk.
  3. Hi All! I've heard many times on here in the Discord Channel that lots of people want to play Star Trek Adventures. There are many reasons that it's difficult to join a group. I think it's locations, times, frequency etc. So, I thought it be good to have a thread and see if there is anyway we can try and pull together in some way and perhaps create some groups for people. I was initially thinking this would likely be organised by timezones, as that would make it easier for gameplay and people could select the most appropriate time zone for themselves. Although I don't believe we'd get the numbers to consistently run a game by doing this. It would likely need to be deciding a time and play frequency that suited the most people who would be interested. I am willing to be the GM, although have zero experience being a GM - so would be happy for someone else to do this. I know that @Ensign Sadar has kindly stated that she'd be willing too, beginning in the spring. Anyone got any thoughts, feelings, opinions or suggestions they'd like to drop in the thread?
  4. Hello everyone! Apologies for the delay, but work was murder this past week. This here is the 'catch up' topic for everyone to post their opinions on the chapters 4-6 that we read for last Friday. Since attendance was low and discussion was limited for last meet-up, any and all are welcome to post their opinions here instead. I hope for a higher turnout next time (including myself)
  5. Summary of the Discussion in Discord - Wednesday, 18th of October 2023. 1) Have any of you read any of S.D. Perry’s other works? No one has read any of S.D. Perry’s other works, though some titles seem familiar and interesting. Her track record of writing for established pop-culture IPs also works to her credit as a sign that she knows how to work within established canons, and thus can be trusted to do the source material justice. 2) How do you feel about the section we’ve read? The general consensus was that it functioned well as a ‘pilot episode’, with both ups and downs. The development of the general plot took backstage to establishing the setting and the characters, old as new, and while the author is perhaps a bit too ‘enamored with their thesaurus’ and tends to focus too much on internal observations, we are optimistic about where the story’ll take us. Was the inclusion of a timeline a good choice, do you think? The timeline was – to some of us – the best part of the chapter, and was a solid way of ensuring that all readers start on the same page in terms of established canon. Do you think starting us off with Jake Sisko was the right jumping off point, or do you think we should’ve started elsewhere? While our opinions on Jake Sisko as a character differed (HOW DARE THEE), we generally agreed that choosing to start the story with him in a separated location and introducing us to the Prylar prior to the event on DS9 was the right call. 3) What do you think of the author’s decision to jump so frequently between characters this early in the story? Has it hurt the pacing of the mystery, or do you think it was a good idea, to get us acquainted with all the different characters? Harking back to our opinion of the first three chapters as the ‘pilot episode’, we did agree that the plot didn’t progress very much at all, but this wasn’t necessarily a detriment to the book’s quality. Some parts of the early chapters (like Kira’s dream sequence) did feel like it could be omitted, or at least not take that much space, but in general, the opinion of the first couple of chapters were positive. 4) What do you think of the newly introduced characters, and what’s your opinion on the deployment of Ro Laren on DS9? Some of us (😉) were very happy to see Ro Laren again, and are excited to see how the tensions between Ro and the Starfleet Personnel, and Ro and Kira, pan out as the story progresses. The reception to the new characters was more lukewarm, with most of us not remembering their names, even if we had a vague recollection of who they were. Of the newly introduced characters, do you think any of them are ‘redshirts’ that will get killed off in the story? Of the newly introduced characters, who would you like to see take center stage for parts of the book? The most common belief expressed during the meeting was that it was difficult to readily accept new characters because of the ‘redshirt’-syndrome, so we’d have to withhold judgment before fully accepting any of the new folks as proper characters in their own rights. 5) With the title of the duology being ‘Avatar’, what do you think this signifies? Gila Sadar has definitely been conditioned to believe all prophesized children evil. The fact that both books carry the moniker ‘Avatar’ – which is what the prophecy the Prylar hands to Jake ostensibly calls Sisko’s unborn child – indicates that, whatever the Avatar actually is, it is going to cause trouble on a larger scale. The use of a prophecy for the first major plot hook was a more divisive move amongst Book Club Members, as a few of us felt it was an overutilized plot device in DS9 to begin with, and it is a trite plot device when we all expect it to go misunderstood for the majority of the story. Nevertheless, theories ran rampant during the meeting, and we’re all invested to see just how wrong Jake’s original translation will turn out to be. 6) Is the book easily readable? Is the pace with which we’ve decided to read suitable for everyone? ‘Easily readable’ is very much a subjective consideration, with a few of the members mentioning that the author’s overadherence to canon and the slow pace of the plot made the initial chapters a slog to get through, while others felt that the book was easy to get through. There was a unanimous agreement that the pace thus far feels suitable for the Book Club’s purposes, however, and as such, we felt comfortable setting a new quota for the next meeting. Thanks to everyone who attended and made the first Book Club Meet-Up a success!! 🥰 For those who weren't able to attend the meeting, or have since recalled an observation or opinion that they weren't able to express during the meeting, feel free to use this thread to keep the conversation going! I'll update the actual Book Club-thread with the new quota and the next Meet-Up date once they have been decided upon!
  6. I have been reading a lot of ST books lately (The Romulan War ENT novel is one of the best sci-fi books I ever read). It really helps with the simming as a constant inspiration. So I was wondering if anyone is doing the same. If so, is anyone interested in starting up a ST book club here in the forums? It can either be deciding on a book or simply discussing books we have read or are reading. Do let me know if there is interest.
  7. Since the two species were co-founders of the Federation, I often wonder why they are so unrepresented in Star Trek. ENT had quite a bit on Andorians, but not near as much (I think) for co-founder. Except for a recent episode of SNW we can almost say "What's a Tellarite?" Thoughts?
  8. Maybe this has already been discussed and if so can someone point me to the correct thread? Watched the Season 3 opened to Picard last night and I have some mixed feelings about the new Titan but my first question is simple. Where are shuttle bays 1 and 2? In the S3E1 when Picard and Riker take the shuttle from the Titan one of the bridge crew indicates that there is an unscheduled departure from "Shuttlebay 3" and we see the shuttle departing the aft tail end of the ship. Looking at the screen capture of the Titan from Paramount I do not see how or where the other two shuttle bays could be located on a ship that is only listed as 560 meters long. Unless they are those small little sections right next to the main impulse drives? Any thoughts or ideas?
  9. I am nearly at the end of a rewatch of DS9, the first complete one I did since my original viewing about a decade ago (though I have watched some individual episodes since) I am fortunate enough to have some notes from that time about my thoughts as well as things that came up from memory and I thought I’d write them briefly (I tell a lie) on this thread. Certain things are better than I remembered, DS9 is a pretty strong series even in the slower first two seasons (certainly better than Next-Gen’s first two seasons) The cast is far stronger than I remembered it, their chemistry is excellent, to the point I’d say I’d pick them over Babylon 5’s (who have brilliant characters such as Molari, Garibaldi, Bester, Ivanova, and Jakar, but not a universally brilliant cast, IMO… in fact, some of them are even terrible.) Jadziah is a better character than I remembered. I didn’t like her in my original viewing because I found her to be a little vain and carefree in what were serious surroundings. She still was that in the first few seasons, but I thought she got a lot better in season 3 or 4 as she got a more jaded a little darker in her outlook. I also found her personality much more charming and rewatching season 6 was a sombre experience knowing what would happen. Ezri was still as charming… even sweet as I remembered (teenaged me had a minor crush on her) though I do wish she had been given more time to play the role. I think the series did the best it could in an unexpected situation (which is DS9’s consistent strong suit) The season gives her more attention than any other character even though it’s supposed to wind-down the series, but it still wasn’t enough. In a way, I wish they’d done it sooner or not at all. In the same way, I kind of wish Kurzon would have played Dax in the first season. I also think it did Jadziah no favours. We barely know who she is outside of Kurzon’s shadow. Ezri at least gets a family episode; Jadziah didn’t even get that. How much more interesting it would have been to have had Kurzon in season 1, even if Jadziah had stayed until 6 with Ezri only in 7. It would have told a complete narrative of its own, death, life, and rebirth. I also take back my thoughts on Dukat. I thought the 6 & 7th seasons did him a disservice, but this time, I think he’s a very consistent villain. I guess I got too carried away thinking he might become more of an anti-hero (a role always reserved for Garrek) But when you really think about it, he was always there to be the antagonist, even when he wasn’t. The brilliant thing DS9 did was just frame the antagonist role in a more complex way than we generally see; sometimes, he's the antagonist by virtue of challenging the protagonist’s concept of evil with gray. Sometimes, he’s petty and vengeful, but he’s always his own man. Even the Pa Wraiths couldn’t put a stop to his womanizing. I think Kira might be the only female Bajoran he didn’t woo (not for lack of trying mind you. I almost got to shipping them) Though I disliked how Odo became the sappy romantic in my original viewing, I can’t say those characters don’t have chemistry and the story of how they end up together is a very sweet one, even if it ends on a bittersweet note. Other worthy mentions include Jake, Nog, as well as all the characters I liked from before who are still as good as I remembered (basically the entire cast) Its just Jake and Nog in particular who stand-out both because those aren’t generally easy roles to play over such a long course of time, and because they were consistently well written and down to earth. My main point of critique against the show is the Dominion War arc. When I really thought about it, I came to the conclusion that it didn’t make any sense. We keep being told how the Dominion is winning the war and the chances are against the Federation and its allies, and yet, we keep seeing them beat the crap out of them. We keep getting told how the Alliance is taking out vital strategic resources only for it to have no affect on the course of the war. Shipyards destroyed (several times)? They have others. Not enough white or Jemhadar? They found some and started breeding them in the Alpha Quadrant. Season 5 ends with the Dominion taking over DS9, while the Allied fleet successfully takes out the Cardassian shipyards. Next time we see them, the allied fleet is battered and on the retreat. We never see those defeats, only their aftermath and the success around the corner, which then evaporates offscreen. That whole stage of the show should have been an entire season of defeats and retreats to give the conflict and the Dominion the appropriate scope and tension, instead, they take DS9 back a few episodes later, even though the writers later decide they still need that war to go on all the way to the end of the show. That’s why I think DS9 could have used one an extra season, or at least focus season 6 on the early stage of the war and 7 on the turning point. At some point, all the stuff with the prophets conflicted too strongly with the war leaving the series unable to tell either as effectively as they could have done in my opinion. Up until then, DS9 did a good job of focusing on one thing at a time; the Cardasians, the Marquis (with the Dominion gradually superseding them as the villains) When we finally get to the Dominion, it gets muddled the Pa Wraiths. Still good, but not as good as I remembered it. All in all, I’d still say it had the strongest overall plots (if not necessarily all the individual episodes) and cast of any Star Trek show. It managed to do the critique of that universe in a nuanced and controlled way. Even Section 31 was done as a very isolated thing which based on the information of the episode, we can’t even say really was Federation sanctioned or even that big of a deal. I blame later Star Trek from going too far with it. To put it in another way, yes, Paradise may have come under a few threats; a coup attempt, Dominion invasion, effective civil war between the Marquis and the Federation, and other challenges to Rodenberry’s idyllic future. That said, the soldiers always transported away at the end leaving Paradise to remain as such, even somewhat improved for having withstood the trial of a less kind reality. It never sought to undermine that vision, just to challenge it. I can't say newer shows have always held true to that principle, while others seemed more comfortable going back rather than fowards. It remains the height of the franchise, in my opinion, and one it didn't reach again since. It will be interesting to see if my less generous views on Voyager and Enterprise will change as I rewatch them Your thoughts?
  10. Ok, got a question for you? We know that if you turn off the safe guards in a holodeck then bullets become real, cars can run you over and phasers can kill. Keeping that in mind, if all safe guards are turned off could you order up an emergency comms transmitter through the holodeck and actually transmit and receive a signal?
  11. Looking for some help. I am looking at playing with a mobile holographic emitter project that my IC will be working on. Based on our current timeline has there been any work already done with MHE's that I can feed off of? Would there be any reason why I could not develop one at this point in our timeline? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Joel/Jack Kessler
  12. Anybody else reading this? I got sent the first one through work and I’m about halfway through it now. S’pretty fun! It’s positioned as a big wrap up for the current Trek Expanded Universe but I’ve felt really that’s it’s fairly more accessible than I was expecting as a single novel experience. I’ve been slightly disconnected from the current EU aside from a few novels here and there but I’ve been pretty pleased with it so far. I was just curious if anyone here were planning on trying them out.
  13. Hello. I went through all my files that I saved over the years. All the ideas for possible stories that I want to write and I found one of them. I think I created this idea around 2009. Somewhere. Called Star Trek: The Fourth Dimension. Something to do with either a time ship or a ship with a temporal warp core that got lost through time. I even had a full credits list of who starred in them. It was supposed to be an idea for a possible TV show. In the time after ENT ended and we entered this period where we needed another Star Trek show or we can't live without one. So I created one. Or tried to. This was my synoposis. The Story starred Captain Lewis C. Kirk and his crew transported through time, became lost and tried to find a way home. Like Voyager only its temporal. The "Time Ship" is able to go into different dimensions and time. The ship can create a rip in time and space in order to go to different universes. Kind of like Doctor Who...in a sense... At that time, because I was young as it was around 2009, I didnt know a lot of rules. So, my story kinda contradicts with what Paramount considers original. Like for example, Lewis C. Kirk is the great grand nephew of the famous James T. Kirk. Fixable. Meaning, I have a chance to either delete him or give him a new name. The First officer is a half human-half Romulan female. The second officer is a male Vulcan. I have a chief engineer named John "Scotty" Jessen who's a....you guessed it. Scottish. My creativity wasnt very good back then. I was creative, but it had its limits. I also created a new race called the Melorians. They have "special" powers. They are telepathic and have the ability to go through walls. They do have their limits. I even have a half human, half Melorian that shares the same powers but with its own limits. There is a recharge limit. He has to rest everytime he goes through walls. And the thicker the walls, the longer he has to rest. ALSO.....he is the only one of his race with the ability to become......invisible. Yup. Invisible. Its very rare its like a genetic abnormality. Also, he is also born deaf due to his ears being malformed. He became deaf and has special devices surgically attached to his ears. Essentially, the half Melorian is me. I named him Ensign Toby Ghost Sloan. At that time when I created him, I felt invisible in RL. And I dreamt that I could go through walls lol....anyways. The last two, or maybe three. Doctor Zora Nebulae is the CMO. She is a non native of the Alpha Quaduant as she is from the Delta Quaduant. I won't reveal much of her. I do have her written down completely, but spoilers. You understand. Anyways, I can tell you this though. I named her Nebulae for a special reason. Her green skin color can change depending on her mood and she is capable of healing. I'm assuming its a special ability that she has that she can heal without the use of technology. That's all I can say...She is and will remain a mystery. Secondly, I also have a strange combination of half Klingon half Cardassian who is a literal tank and is ten times stronger OR has ten times the strength of a Klingon. I will work on that. Finally, I have a ships AI. An Artificial Intelligence called Lomarr. Supposedly similar to Data but with the traits of "Andromeda's" AI, Rommie. But not Rommie in a sense. Similar. Lomarr can be either male or female and I think, they can be both. It's an artificial computer in the form of a human. So.....what do you think? Feel free to bash me, but please, be nice to me. I created all those back in the ancient time that is 2009....or 2010. I want to recreate this story, if it has potential? Maybe you can help me? Or encourage me? Maybe I'll have time to pursue all this idea...
  14. Did anyone catch what the two names were that the Barzan botanist called his two daughters after Barzan II moons? I couldn't quite understand what he said.
  15. Does anyone believe their is a correct way to write for Section 31? I’ve seen it abused in the past way to much which is why so many sims leave it to fleet management or game masters to run them. however I believe if a group actually discussed it and there were rules in place a section 31 mission or arc would bring out some great game play and character development (minus all the abuse).
  16. Hi everyone! I've always been interested in the minor ship classes in Star Trek - the ones that show up for about five seconds in an episode or two or else exist to be blown up in some way or other. My personal favourite of these is the Sydney class (like the USS Jenolan) because it has a design that I just find really neat as a midway point between a shuttle and a larger ship. What's your favourite?
  17. The first two minutes of Discovery season 3 is out on YouTube right now! I have no idea what's going on, but it's pretty intense. Go check it out! I'm not going to post the link because there's mild language so view at your own discretion.
  18. Prepare the younguns: Another animated series for Star Trek is on its way, due 2021.
  19. In case you missed it, here's the official trailer: And they've released a clip from the first episode today at Comic-Con@Home:
  20. Am I excited? YOU BET YOUR VULCAN MIND I'M EXCITED IT'S FINALLY HAPPENING PEOPLE I CAN FINALLY STOP SENDING LONG-WINDED EMAILS TO THE TREK GODS
