  1. Welcome to the Writing Challenge 2023! Last year, we had a fantastic run of entries for the challenge, and once again, it's time to boldly go where no writer has gone before! Let's face it, writing can be tough. Staring at a blank page can be like staring into the abyss. But writing to a prompt for a small challenge can be just the kick in the cosmic pants needed to get the creative juices flowing. It can be a fun way to explore new genres and themes, nerd out about your favourite franchise, and find out new ways to write you'd never thought you could. Dig into those realms of plot ideas you've got brewing, drag out the lists of "what if" and try it out! This year, the leading entrant of last year's contest, Fleet Captain @Kali Nicholotti has ingeniously provided the prompt for our community this time around... "If you've come to the end... you've only found another beginning." I can imagine some of your heads are already churning through the prompt and coming up with all manner of ideas. Themes immediately spring to mind of change and transformation, the characters ploughing through the depths of their development and emerging stronger for it. Or maybe renewal and continuation, for characters that reach a turning point and discover a new path, forging their destiny ahead. Perhaps your characters will endure, exploring themes of perseverance and resilience, against insurmountable obstacles, and overcoming them through determination and teamwork. The creativity of this community is in the details. From the eloquent prose and deep emotion to the twists and turns of plot magic, this group truly invites you to boldly go where no one has gone before. Rules & Guidelines: Word count should be a minimum of 300 and a maximum of 3000. One judge will be chosen from each ship to help select the winner. Members are welcome to submit solo stories, or team up with a buddy to submit a collaborative epic, but only one story per person, please! Your submission should be in the format of a short story. Prose, not sim formatting. (See here for examples.) All members are welcome to submit entries for the community to read, but only those from active simmers will be reviewed by the judging panel for the final winner selection. If you want to submit a story but don't want to enter it into the challenge, prefix the forum post with "showcase" and let us read your good stuff! Submissions are, by default, non-canon – if you find a way to shoehorn this into your own backstory, you're free to use it if you wish, but certainly not a requirement. You can create whatever characters make sense for the story. You don't have to use or reference any of your current characters. Rank is not an issue here – write as an Ensign or a Captain, civilian, whatever makes sense for your story! And you're free to use characters you've already written for in sim, but please don't include anyone else's. Submit your story directly into the first post of a new thread. Use the following format for the thread title: [Primary Character Name(s) of author(s)]: "My Story's Interesting Title" Tristan Wolf: "Five Ways to End Your Starfleet Career" All stories must be submitted by Sunday, May 28th at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Good luck!
  2. Welcome to the Writing Challenge 2022! Last year, we had a fantastic run of entries for the challenge, with some smashing stories that really knocked it out of the space park. We had the laughs, we had the tears, and we shared them all with our fellow writers here on our beloved StarBase 118. Taking a prompt and writing something out of the ordinary for us is a great way to burst through the writing block walls and twitch those itchy keyboard fingers into creating a masterpiece. Dig into those realms of plot ideas you've got brewing, drag out the lists of "what if" and try it out! As our winner of last year’s challenge, Lieutenant Commander @Wes Greaves has come up with the prompt for our community this time around... "The texture of their shirt... I'll never forget the way it felt in my hand that day." Doesn't that just punch you in the gut? Themes immediately come to mind of the dramatic and hard hitting development we put our characters through in the course of the mission, in the consequences faced on shore leave. Perhaps your character will go on a journey of self-discovery, or explore themes of finality and endings, retribution and atonement, and perhaps a dash of mortality? Star Trek has often demonstrated that these little, concentrated moments may be at the heart of the human (and alien!) experience. The creativity of this community is in the details. From the eloquent prose and deep emotion to the twists and turns of plot magic, this group truly invites you to boldly go where no one has gone before. 3. As our winner of last year’s challenge, Commander @Geoffrey Teller has come up with the prompt for our community this time around. A throwback to flashbacks for everyone, this calls to mind themes of the little things which can affect characters in those huge ways. Maybe your character will venture on a voyage on discovery about themselves, or explore themes of finality and endings, retribution and redemption, even a bit of mortality thrown in? Star Trek has consistently shown us these small, focused moments can be at the very heart of the human (and alien!) experience. You could go anywhere with this one! "I always loved the wind… ...until that mission on Telstrus 3." How would your character react to this situation? What's going through their mind? What scene immediately pops into your head? Is there a word-fire kindling? Does it transport you somewhere? If so, bust out the virtual pen and paper, brew that Earl Grey and get cracking! One judge will be chosen from each ship to help select the winner. Rules & Guidelines: Word count should be a minimum of 300 and a maximum of 3000. 4. For this year, following along with the themes of the recent newly released series of Star Trek: Picard, and the current situation many of us are facing at home, the chosen theme is one of Star Trek's most beloved storytelling mechanics — Echoes of the Past. "The view screen snaps into focus on an impossible sight, and a voice from your past speaks to you and you alone..." How would your character react in this situation? What's going through their mind? What scene immediately pops into your head? Is there a word-fire kindling? Does it transport you somewhere? If so, bust out the virtual pen and paper, brew that Earl Grey and get cracking! 5. Join our 9th Annual Halloween Avatar Contest! Here's the quick-and-spooky: Each crew chooses a theme – like "Nightmare Before Christmas," or "Mugshots," or "Sesame Street" – then, each person on the crew is assigned a character and changes their forum avatar to an image of that character. A panel of judges (one person from each ship) helps decide the winners! HOW TO ENTER THE COMPETITION Each crew must pick a theme. If you haven't seen anyone on your ship's OOC email list start a brainstorming thread, check your ship's forum to see if there's a thread started there. If you can't find one, open a thread in your ship forum titled "2019 Halloween Avatar Contest - YourShipHere" and start a discussion on what theme you should pick! For a member of the crew to be considered part of the team, they must: change their avatar here on the forums check in to crew's official thread in this forum (more on that below) with a funny quote, quip, or greeting. (i.e.- "Trick or treat!"). Please keep any other extraneous posts out of this thread as it will be used to count the ship's participants. Regarding check-in threads: The second post in the check-in thread must an announcement of the ship's theme. Check-in threads will be locked until October 1, when the contest begins. Participants must be checked-in to their ship's thread in this forum by Sunday, October 20 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Avatars must remain in their costumed forms until at least Thursday, October 31 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Each crew entering the contest must upload their avatars to the wiki following this tutorial to the letter. Please follow each instructions closely and exactly – your crew will be disqualified if you do not follow the instructions! JUDGING SCORING Originality of theme: You may not use a theme that involves Starfleet crews we've seen onscreen or in beta canon – so no Enterprise, Voyager, DS9 crews, etc.! You are welcome to use other Star Trek themes if you want. Beyond that, just get really creative! Design quality of avatars: Check out past entrants and winners for some understanding of what we're looking for. Important note on design: Avatar designers should ensure that the avatars, as they appear on each person's check-in post, works best. Many ships create a "unified graphic" with all the characters on it, and then just slice that up. But this often leaves text unreadable once each person puts the avatar onto their profile. So focus more on making the avatar appear correctly on the forums. Keep in mind that the unified graphic is not judged or required, so while it's a bit of fun to bring all the avatars together and show the theme, don't assume that unified graphic will win you the contest! Number of crew members checked in: This is a multiplier to the previous two qualifications. For example, if the official crew roster (maintained by the ship CO and FO) says there are 12 crew members, and 5 people are checked-in to the thread, then your multiplier is 42%. JUDGES PANEL We'll ask each ship to send a volunteer – they can't be the ship's CO, and they must not be on more than one ship. Each judge will rank every ship's entry on the originality and design quality per above. Judges will not be able to rank their own ship in the first position. We'll use Ranked Choice Voting to determine the winner for each category. Once we have the scores for each of the two categories, we'll add them together, and then multiply by the number of crew members checked in, per above. The crew with the highest score, total, wins the competition. We'll also announce the runners-up. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS » How do I change my avatar? A detailed tutorial is found here. » What's the deal with the funny quote, quip, or greeting required on the check-in thread? It could be a quote from the character you're using, or something funny that you just make up on the fly. But make it good -- ask your teammates for help if you need inspiration! » Can my team use a theme that's previously been used? Yes, as long as you use new images. » Where do we get avatar images if none of us on my team are good at graphics? Check out the graphics request forum. Ask nicely for best results! » Do the avatars have to look like the characters? No. » How is participation counted? What about secondaries and disabled members? The number of possible participants will be pulled from the official ship roster (maintained by CO and FO) on Monday, October 22. We will discount properly marked secondaries and any members who are disabled and cannot access the forums, as per the CO of the ship. » When will winners be announced? Near the end of October/beginning of November. » What do the winners get? A forum badge everyone can put in their signature, and serious credibility. » What if I have other questions? Post them in the discussion thread!
  6. Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery kicks off January 17, 2019! We'll start this one thread for now to see how much discussion it generates and if we need to split into individual episode discussion threads, we can, but I think keeping it all in one thread should be manageable and easy for others to flag as filled with spoilers if they're worried about that. So, let's begin... RED ALERT! SPOILERS BELOW! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
  7. Nominations for the 2019 Awards Ceremony open on Monday, May 20 at 12:15am Pacific Time and close on Monday, June 10 at 11:45pm Pacific Time. If this is your awards ceremony with us, welcome! This is a tradition that dates back to 1996, wherein we honor the people of the fleet who are simming really well, or contributing OOC. Back in the "old days," we would gather the entire fleet onto one email list (we were a lot smaller then...) and sim together an award presentation; now we do things a bit differently. Here's how it works today: Everyone in the fleet submits nominations for consideration. The group staff (ship COs, EC members, etc.) review the nominations. Each ship has their own awards presentation on their OOC email list for awards in the General Awards category. Award in this category can be given to one person on each ship. Then, we have a fleetwide presentation of awards here on the forums. Awards in the Duty Post, Special, Staff, and Length of Service categories are presented over the course of three days. One person in the fleet can receive each of the Duty Post, Special, and Staff categories. How to nominate: We rely on each and every member of the fleet to submit nominations so we can recognize the best members of our community who are putting in the time and effort to make this a fun place to be. So we need your help! If you don't nominate your peers and mentors for awards, they won't get recognized. We want to encourage everyone to be really free with their nominations – there's no penalty in putting in a nomination that doesn't ultimately get the award. But ships that have fewer nominations tend to end up having fewer award winners – so don't be shy! Multiple nominations from members of a ship for any given award can help send a signal to reviewers that a certain person is really deserving, but also one really great nomination can be the deciding factor for someone to win an award. Follow these simple instructions to get started: Check out the wiki Hall of Honor to see the list of awards and learn more: https://wiki.starbase118.net/wiki/index.php?title=Award Consider who you want to nominate. Then do a quick check on the list of past award winners to make sure they haven't won the award before: https://wiki.starbase118.net/wiki/index.php?title=List_of_Award_Recipients (You can sort the table by clicking on the column headers, or you can use your browser's "Find" feature to quickly find a character anywhere on the page – on PC, use CTRL+F, on Mac use ⌘+F.) If the person hasn't won the award before, head to the nomination form: https://www.starbase118.net/members/personnel/forms/award-nomination-panel/ Enter your information and select the award. Then write a nomination reason. For some awards, we'll ask you for a link to a sim if you have one readily available that helps justify your nomination. Don't stress out about finding a sim, but if you have one, it could help. If you feel really confident about your award nomination, chat with others on your ship who might also feel the same way and recommend they make a similar nomination! Writing a good nomination: Remember, your nominations are going up against other nominations from your ship (for General category awards), or from the entire fleet (Duty Post, Special, Staff category awards). So the better you make your case for why your nomination should win, the more likely it is that it will help your nominee end up getting the award. Last year, we put together some nominations that helped nominees in 2017 win. You can check them out for some inspiration: https://www.starbase118.net/2018/award-nomination-examples/ (We'll post some more from last year – 2018 – in the next few days.) All that being said, don't go overboard! If the case for a nominee self-evident, or clearly shown by a sim, it's okay to write less in your explanation and allow the evidence to stand on its own. How to get a sim link: You can grab a link to a sim by going to your ship's Google Group archive (the link is in the footer of every sim). Awards Ceremony schedule: June 27, Thursday: PRESENTATION: Introduction, General Awards June 29, Friday: PRESENTATION: Special and Length of Service Awards June 29, Saturday: PRESENTATION: Staff Awards June 30, Sunday: PRESENTATION: Duty Post Awards, finale/acknowledgments, complete ceremony posted on the Community News, in an announcement to the fleet via email, and on the wiki. Questions? Head to the Discord chatroom, where we have the #awards2019 room where you can ask questions of other members. Or, ask your FO or CO for help – they're happy to answer questions and have been through multiple ceremonies!

  9. Per the Community News post about the closing of the Featured Bio Contest, please note the following: Nominations for Round 5 will continue through September 1, as scheduled The winner of Round 5 will be announced by mid-September and posted on the Community News Following that announcement, this contest will close and we will archive the forum
  10. Hey folks, Wanted to make sure you all saw this Graphics Contest retrospective by Capt. Sal Taybrim, which we posted on the news a few days ago. Although the contest has ended, we wanted to feature the winners of this contest and thank everyone who participated, including Capt. Jalana Rajel, who originated and facilitated the contest.
  11. Welcome to our first June ceremony, marking our 20th anniversary of this awards ceremony tradition. While our group was founded in 1994, our first ceremony was held in 1996, bringing together the whole fleet for an In Character celebration. Since then, we’ve seen the addition of dozens of new awards, a transition to Out Of Character presentations, and in this latest change, a move from the traditional December presentation to June, to coincide with the yearly anniversary of our founding. It’s time to turn your heads to the red carpet as we begin this week-long event, where we’ll present to the fleet six categories of awards: Duty Post: Honoring the best simmer from each duty post Special: Honoring specific aspects of simming or OOC work Length of Service: Honoring members who have been with us for a year, all the way up to 10 years and more Staff: Honoring the work of our fleet’s staff members General/Ship awards: Honoring the members who won this year’s General, or ship-based awards Featured missions: Honoring the best missions and sims from this past year Also, in this thread, I want to introduce this year's Award's Facilitator, Fleet Captain Renos! The job of the Awards Facilitator is one that involves an incredible amount of work, from helping to pull together an Awards Committee (which reviews all the Duty Post, and Special nominees and selects the winners), to compiling all of the nominations and making sure they get to the right people, and then helping to manage all of the materials and assets required to make this ceremony a success! It's hard to imagine just how much copying, pasting, and collating is involved until you've got the mantle on your shoulders Renos (OOC: James) has been working tirelessly over the past few weeks to help bring everything together. 1,000 thanks to him for all that! 👏👏👏👏👏 We hope you've all donned your fanciest outfits – it's time to celebrate
  12. Attention, fleet mates! With the recent awards ceremony still fresh in our minds, an exciting new section of the wiki has just opened: the StarBase 118 Hall of Honor! Under the directive of Fleet Admiral Wolf, the awards and service ribbons pages have been completely transformed into a new comprehensive and integrated section of the wiki that serves to recognize the achievements of our fellow members. New Menus You can navigate through the awards and service ribbons through the new menus at the top of each page. Highlighting Recent Recipients Award recipients are given more prominence. For instance, the most recent award recipients are displayed right on the award overview pages such as the duty post awards, staff awards, etc. (For those wiki-curious folks, the recent recipient data for these pages is pulled directly from the individual award pages themselves, using transclusion similar to how the Fleet Roster works, meaning these pages won't need to be updated). New Individual Award Pages We hope the new Hall of Honor reflects the level of distinction that award recipients have earned. To be awarded a "fleet level" award should be something to be proud of, and the old table listings lacked the proper recognition. A full comprehensive table listing is still available for easy record keeping, especially come next awards season, but each award now has its own page. When you click on the link to an award (or the image of an award on a person's ribbon rack or display case from their bio page), you will be taken directly to that award's own page. If the award is a fleet level award (meaning only one person is usually given the award per year) or a length of service award, you will see all the recipients displayed like award plaques on a wall. For instance, here's what the page for the Rising Star Award looks like. Interactive Plaques Each plaque is interactive. Click on the name or picture to go to that person's bio. Click on the year to read the full awards ceremony from that year. Click on the writer ID number to go the user page of that character's writer. Comments, questions, and suggestions are welcome!
  13. Welcome to Top Sims Contest of 2015! All announcements for the entire 2015 contest will be posted in this thread. The Top Sims contest allows members of our fleet to be recognized by their peers for superior writing ability. Unlike the Writing Challenges, this contest allows only sims that have been used in a current plot to be considered. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES You can submit ANY sim -- from your ship, or another ship. You can submit your own sims if you wish. All sims are welcome, including staff (Captain, First Officer, etc.) sims. The sim must be written with good spelling, good grammar, and be in the correct format. Poorly structured sims will be disqualified. When a sim is submitted, it must have been created within the current submission period, or the previously lapsed submission period. Put another way: do not sims which are any older than a month.Submitted sims may not have any open dialogue tags. (i.e.: [respond here]) All dialogue in the sim must be filled in. (Just find the responding author's sim and fill in the blanks.)Sims must not include any "canon" characters. (i.e.- no characters who have appeared onscreen.)Please find a balance between nominating too many, or too few sims. Don't submit every good sim -- instead, post every great sim! Encourage your fellow crew-mates to submit at least a few sims a year. If you want your crew-mates to win more, you have to nominate the best sims, and encourage others to write higher quality sims! HOW TO SUBMIT A SIM First: Click the "Start New Topic" button. The format of the topic title should be as follows: "Character - Sim Title" For example: "LtJG Tristan Wolf - Everywhere you go, there you are"Note: Please do not clutter the topic title with an endless list of NPC or PNPC names or "JP" designations. Instead, simply include the primary character's rank and name. If it's a joint post, just include both rank and names -- no need to include the "JP" in there.Second: Choose from the "Topic Prefix" box the correct round number. (To check what round we're currently in, see the contest calendar below.) Third: Copy into the message box the complete sim. You don't need to worry about column width. Check to make sure that the sim is readable. You can click the "Edit" button to fix any issues, but don't delay -- you'll be barred from editing the post after 60 minutes. COMMENTING ON A SIM Everyone is welcome to comment on submitted sims. If you're going to provide constructive criticism, you are required to employ the "hamburger" criticism method: first, mention something you like; second, something you didn't like; third, something else you liked. 14. Welcome to Top Sims Contest of 2014! All announcements for the entire 2014 contest will be posted in this thread. You can click the "Edit" button to fix any issues, but don't delay -- the window to open a post closes after a short while. COMMENTING ON A SIM Everyone is welcome to comment on submitted sims. If you're going to provide constructive criticism, you are required to employ the "Hamburger" criticism method: first, mention something you like; second, something you didn't like; third, something else you liked. If you just want to provide praise, no hamburger method required! Commenters who are rude, unfair, or overzealous in their commenting will be barred from future comments in the contest forum, and will have their actions brought to the attention of their CO. 18. That's right! Beginning with the September and October Writing Challenge, we have available for you a downloadable PDF that contains all of the entries from the Writing Challenge round. Winners will get a special write-up on the first page. Now you can add the stories to your computer or mobile device and read them at your leisure! Our first compilation is available right here!
  19. This poll will close at Midnight (EST) on Wednesday, Just 19th. This is a run-off poll, where our members will choose from the top sims of the second set of six rounds of the contest to find the best sim that will proceed to the final round of the contest. Please read the six sims below, which were chosen by a panel of judges (one from each ship) to find the best sims from each round of Set 2: Captain Reynolds: The Sole SurvivorLt JG Ben Livingston - Brotherly Love PNPC Sherana & Cmdr. Tal Tel-ar - Sparring Match PNPC Matthew Brice - Federation Man, Galaxy Defender PNPC Unky - Umm. This one kind of got away from me, actually.... Lt. Cmdr. Katy Orman - Clashing Once you've read the sims, vote in the poll above. Choose the sim that's the best written, most evocative, makes you feel the most, and generally deserves to be considered as one of our fleet's very best. If any crew is found "stuffing the ballot" -- having everyone on the crew vote for the same sim to ensure it proceeds to the final round -- that crew will be eliminated from the contest for the remainder of the year. Good luck to everyone.
  20. Please use this thread for any general discussion or questions about the Top Sims Contest. Do not post praise or criticism for submitted sims in this thread. Instead, post those praise or criticisms in the submitted sim's own thread.
