  3. THE AAVARO WILDS – In recent years, the Federation has invested significant resources in the exploration and development of the Wilds, a region bordering the Cardassian Union, with the goal of creating a stable and thriving region for future generations. With the establishment of Denali Station on Ring 42, Starfleet has finally achieved its goal of establishing a permanent presence in the region. “The station will serve as a hub for future exploration and scientific research, and will provide a platform for continued diplomatic engagement with the many species that call the Aavaro Wilds their home,” Fleet Captain Oddas Aria stated. However, Starfleet’s efforts are being threatened by a new and growing problem: Orion piracy. Starfleet has responded to the Orion piracy threat by increasing patrols in the Aavaro Wilds, but these efforts have had limited success. The vastness of the region and the limited resources available – currently there are only three Starfleet vessels deployed in the Wilds – make it difficult for Starfleet to effectively police the area. The recent attack on Denali Station by Orion pirates marks a disturbing escalation in the tactics used by these criminal elements. The pirates used a particularly audacious and dangerous technique: using asteroids as weapons. By manipulating the trajectory of these massive space rocks, the pirates were able to send them on a collision course with the Starfleet base on Ring 42. The attack was only thwarted by the quick thinking and bravery of the Starfleet personnel stationed at Denali Station. Despite their best efforts, however, the attack was not without serious consequences. The Station’s infrastructure sustained significant damage. In addition to the damage to the Station, several Starfleet personnel were injured in the attack, with some even losing their lives. It is clear that the Orion pirates are getting bolder in their tactics. Their attack on the Federation’s crown jewel in the Wilds serves as a wake-up call to Starfleet. An anonymous source working for the Security Department at Denali Station stated that “A combination of enhanced security measures, increased intelligence gathering, and the development of new technologies are desperately needed to defend ourselves against these rogue elements operating in the Wilds.” The post Orion piracy threatens to destabilize the Aavaro Wilds appeared first on Federation News Service. 4. Is sharing thoughts really better than speaking? Some Betazed officials are starting to disagree. Many of us have come to the realisation that sensing and listening to what others think and feel is a far easier way to communicate ideas rather than having to compress them into sentences and sounds–a language for children and off-worlders. But like any complex thing, there are disadvantages to telepathy as well. Quite frequently, telepathic communication will seem to “leave people out” of conversations, a resulting desolate and confused feeling emanating from whoever isn’t as skilled as the rest of us. This can sometimes leave the conversation more bitter than one would hope. Sometimes these controlled private conversations can be a good thing, such as during the dreadful time of Betazed’s occupation by the Dominion. However, most of those who end up feeling disregarded in this way are our wonderful Betazoid youth who are still gaining their telepathic abilities and learning how the universe works. At times we want to protect them, leave out the messy details, but some consider this to be as bad as lying. By no means should we teach a daughter or son of Betazed, even subconsciously, that this action is okay. On the other hand, there are clear advantages to telepathic communication. It is just far more simple to share our thoughts rather than put them into words. We can describe something such as a rose and its thorns with far more simplicity, and explain those feelings that are so complex there aren’t words for them in Federation Standard. We use telepathy when we won’t hear a shout, and in times when one may be busy eating or breathing. Not only is telepathy simple, it’s also convenient. So why are we reconsidering if there are so many good things about our “special powers”? Betazed nobility is also torn on the subject. Daughter Deexila Etraax of the Second House heavily prefers telepathy over verbal communication and uses such whenever possible. She stated (telepathically), “How I or others commune is none of your business. One may use their voice whenever they deem fit.” Other Daughters are speaking to each other verbally despite the ability to telepathically communicate. They say this is to make Betazed more welcoming to Tourism and to become more active members of the Federation. Perhaps they are right, and that converting our thoughts into soundwaves is the way of the future. In our society of “Naked Truth,” there should be no reason to keep information from someone. So why are we so hesitant to place our thoughts – however edited they might be – into the world for those around to hear? As published in Rogue magazine, Issue SD239809 The post Say It Out Loud – Reconsidering the value of verbal communication appeared first on Federation News Service. View the full article
  5. DELTA IV – Geneca Incorporated and species-rights group set to face off in court after rights group claims products violate genetic ethics laws. Geneca’s recent launch of Deltan pheromone-derived fragrances have proven controversial, as the wildly popular scents have been banned by a number of public venues and services. “We’ve decided enough is enough. The people of Delta IV have evolved to handle these pheromones over millennia.” said Pensiva, an Arbazan solicitor for the species-rights group. “To create products which utilize these powerful secretions for the general public’s consumption is both wildly unsafe and shamefully unethical. Geneca incorporated needs to know that they cannot monetize species-specific traits anymore.” This comes on the heels of Geneca’s scandal last year, when they launched their El-Aurian skincare and multivitamin line, which promised that race’s long life and youthful appearance. Scientists were quick to refute those claims, stating that El-Aurians’ longevity comes not from a skin cream or supplement, but rather from the continued production of telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein in the gene sequence. After the hearing today, trial is set for 240008.01, and the species rights group have assembled a lengthy witness list, including various experts from across the federation. Geneca appears to be unwilling to back down, having hired a famed Ferengi attorney group from the planet Balancar. “Geneca’s products have been proven safe in internal trials, and these reports of public disruption are sensationalistic and exaggerated.” said Mauk, a Ferengi attorney. “We maintain that many of these reports come from Geneca’s competitors.” The post Geneca, Inc. taken to court by species-rights group appeared first on Federation News Service. 6. MARS – Archaeologists have unearthed the remains of a pre-warp civilization on a Gamma Quadrant planet, seemingly assaulted by the Borg. A team of Starfleet Archaeology Institute scientists designated the planet as “Gamma-47” during their survey. They were investigating reported ancient ruins on the surface. On arrival, they discovered a large, severely damaged city exhibiting advanced technology and sophisticated architecture. Further investigation revealed a civilization built the city, proficient in using energy shields and transporter technology, yet lacking space flight capabilities. Archaeologists found evidence of a massive past battle, apparent from numerous weapons and debris strewn across the site. The presence of Borg technology emerged as the most striking find, according to the lead archaeologist, Dr. Elizabeth Sherman. “We found numerous drones and debris, and even the remnants of a damaged Borg cube,” she declared. “It’s evident that the Borg attacked this planet, attempting to assimilate its inhabitants.” Archaeologists recovered several artefacts and relics from the site, including a semi-functional holographic record displaying the civilization’s final moments before the attack. “It was a chilling sight,” Dr. Sherman remarked. “The holographic record portrayed a city under assault, Borg drones flooding the streets while desperate inhabitants tried to defend themselves. It serves as a tragic reminder of the galaxy’s dangers.” Scholars and historians have engaged in a heated debate following the discovery of a pre-warp civilization attacked by the Borg. The controversy centres around the extent of the Borg’s reach and their intent to assimilate non-spacefaring cultures. “This brings up crucial questions about Borg behaviour and motivation,” Dr. Sherman pointed out. “Are they solely targeting civilizations with warp capability, or are they also pursuing pre-warp cultures? If so, what motivates them? These inquiries necessitate further research.” In the meantime, the Starfleet Archaeology Institute has committed to further investigation of Gamma-47 and preservation of the recovered artefacts and relics. “This significant discovery sheds new light on galactic history,” Dr. Sherman stated. “We’ll continue studying these remains to better understand the past and prepare for the future.” The post Borg Attack Suspected in Gamma Quadrant’s Pre-Warp Ruins appeared first on Federation News Service. 7. BYZBAR VECTIS – Bardeezan and Byzallian officials attend a treaty signing that officially declares peace between the two planets for the first time in their troubled history. Chief Namhug of Bardeez and Nestor Toral – representative of the Provisional National Government of Byzatium – were in attendance yesterday, along with Starfleet officials, to sign a historic treaty that officially declares peace between the two planets for the first time in their troubled history. Ever since the Bardeezans and Byzallians were capable of space travel, the system neighbours have been at odds, with the majority of the agitation between the two peoples originating from the unchecked abduction of Bardeezan citizens by Byzallian pirates. These abductees are usually taken to be sold as slaves to replace losses from the Byzallian Dorfmen population as they, in turn, find themselves the victims of abductions from the enigmatic Omunic race that shares their home planet with them. Two years ago, the tensions between the system neighbours erupted into all-out war, when newly elected Bardeezan Chief Fairlos Namhug declared that Bardeez would no longer merely defend its borders, instead promising to take the fight to the Byzallians. The conflict has since taken a devastating toll on both worlds, as the Bardeezans found themselves woefully ill-equipped for battle on such a large scale, while the fractious Dorfmen were unable to fully set aside their differences to present a united front against both the Bardeezans and the continued threat of the Omunics. “Getting the two sides to sit down and talk was actually easier than getting the Dorfmen to decide which tribe’s leader would be their representative at the negotiations.” Remarked Admiral Fitzgerald of Starfleet, who had spearheaded the Federation’s quest for peace between the two planets. “Both sides realised continuing the conflict was simply unsustainable.” With the signing of the treaty, there is hope among Starfleet officials that the two planets will not only be able to live peacefully, side-by-side but that this momentous occasion may lead to improved relations and even perhaps joint efforts between Bardeez and Byzatium. However, Chief Namhug was more sceptical when asked for his opinion on that possibility, saying: “It will take more than a signature on a piece of paper to convince us Bardeezans that the Byzallians are willing to cease hostilities, much less cooperate with us!” When quizzed further on what he meant by the statement, Chief Namhug simply replied: “Trust must be earned.” Nestor Toral declined to comment. 8. Several ships participated in the search for the Caboto including ships of the United Dominion of Planets (UDP). Leading the search the USS Oumuamua, which this reporter calls home, made headway in recovering several children from the Caboto as well as others discovered in wreckage reported by the UPD. While the Caboto remains officially missing, I caught up with Lieutenant Jack Kessler tactical officer on the USS Oumuamua. Simon Vomek (SV): What is JC Kessler like as a Father and a Captain? Jack Kessler (JK): As a father and a Captain he blends many traits together. He is not harsh or quick to act. Always be thoughtful and measures the situation wanting to make sure that you understand the reason for his decision and actions. Both as a father and a Captain he would let you test your ground but I think he did that so that he could test you as well and then when he needed to plant his foot, he did. SV: What about Maurine Kessler, your mother? What is her role on the Caboto? JK: Mom, she’s a scientist at heart. Although not Starfleet she still serves aboard the ship as a civilian Exo-species research biologist. She is very active on the ship and loves her work. SV: What was Caboto doing prior to coming into the Gamma Quadrant? JK: Prior to coming to the Gamma quadrant the Caboto had been assigned to DS11 conducting surveys just beyond the edge of Federation space. The assignment was pretty routine from the letters I got from dad. SV: What was their mission profile in the Gamma Quadrant? JK: Their Starfleet mission was a diplomatic courier and was supposed to be a quick drop off of Federation diplomats to the UDP headquarters for further negotiations. They were then to rendezvous with the USS ‘Oumuamua where we would have spent shore leave together. It was going to be the first time I had seen them in person since graduating from the Academy. SV: I’m sorry you missed that reunion. What about the Caboto? Are any special features or tricks the ship has that might give Captain Kessler the edge? JK: Based on the way the Zet attacked the ‘Oumuamua, any special features the Caboto had were probably taken out by surprise. If we had not been on the alert and looking for a hostile response the Zet might have blindsided us as well. SV: At this time, all evidence suggests that Caboto was attacked by the Zet, but was not destroyed. Is JC out there avoiding the Zet? Can you give an example of his tenacity as a Captain when the odds are against him? JK: We know the Caboto to be severely damaged and based on social feeds [SV: Tidbitter is a Zet-based media sharing service], in the hands of the Zet. Dad is a by-the-book officer. If he found himself in a situation where the ship was going to be taken and he had no way to reclaim her, ::beat:: he would have destroyed the Caboto himself. If the Zet have the ship then I fear something went terribly wrong. SV: Should the Zet be concerned about what your father is capable of? JK: If he is alive, yes, the Zet should be worried. Actually, they should be very worried. If he is alive, they are holding a ticking time bomb if you know what I mean? SV: Speaking as an Omuamua crew member I hope you’re right. No one unexpected turn of events was the recovery of several children from a waystation in the quadrant, one of whom was discovered to be Krystal Kessler, your sister. How is she doing and how is she adjusting to life on the Oumuamau? JK: I think she is adapting as best as can be expected. The poor kid has been through a lot and I am just trying to make each day the best possible. SV: Do either of you believe JC and Maurine are gone or are they still out there fighting? JK: Until you show me proof they are dead, I have to believe that they are alive and plotting at this very moment how to take back their ship. SV: Thank you, Lieutenant, for your time. This reporter and I expect many across the Federation, wish JC Kessler all the best and we expect him home in time for dinner. His son, Jack, continues to make a name for himself on the Oumuamua receiving a recent promotion to full lieutenant and numerous commendations. 9. AENELLA IV — While there are many beautiful and fascinating places scattered across the galaxy, only very few are as unique and captivating as Aenella IV. The small, yet fascinating moon is located in close proximity to the Lambda Hydrae System, but despite its beauty is rarely visited by outsiders. What makes this celestial body unique is the telepathic field emanates from a certain plant specimen of the moon and pervades over 80% of its surface. This is a remarkable phenomenon, and allows for instant communication and understanding between different life forms, making the moon a truly interconnected ecosystem. Despite its many wonders, the population of the moon is relatively small, consisting mainly of species that are able to function while interconnected with their environment. Outside of the telepathic field, only 12% of Aenella IV is inhabited. Recently, entrepreneurs have voiced the desire to clear several hundred acres of forested area, believing that shrinking the telepathic field will make the moon more hospitable and open it up to new opportunities. However, this proposal is met with opposition from locals who fear that disturbing the telepathic field will have disastrous consequences for the ecosystem. The fate of Aenella IV remains undecided, with both sides presenting compelling arguments for their cause. One thing is clear, however: Aenella IV and its unique ecosystem deserve careful consideration before any decisions are made. It is a testament to the remarkable diversity of life in the universe and a reminder that even the smallest celestial bodies can hold wonders beyond our wildest imagination. 10. IADARA COLONY – Sources have reported the possible discovery of an experimental starship, which was designed and developed during the Dominion War and reported missing on its initial testing voyage. This discovery, if confirmed, could be the most significant find of the decade. Conspiracy theories have been circulating since the end of the Dominion War in 2375, alleging that Starfleet ordered the construction of the test starship from an undisclosed site within the Iadara System. However, most of the information related to the development has been redacted. While the experimental starship was once believed to be a counterintelligence vessel capable of rendering Cardassian scanning systems inert and ineffective, it has never been seen or flown, leading to various conspiracy theories about its existence and purpose. Renowned treasure hunter Jeroa Juluh, in statements made shortly before her death in 2398, claimed that the experimental starship was one of three vessels developed in Iadara during the lead-up to the Dominion War. However, the fate of the other two vessels remains undisclosed. The Dominion and Cardassian Union wreaked havoc during the Dominion War, with the Breen Confederacy joining the fray and dealing a significant tactical setback to the allies due to the potency of their energy-dampening weapons, particularly in the Second Battle of Chin’toka. As a result, much of the information surrounding potential advancements at the Iadara Colony has been lost. Further data concerning probable advancements in the Iadara Colony has vanished, but one source claims to know the location of the missing starship. Captain Ciloa of Star Salvage Solutions believes that Starfleet will attempt to prevent anyone other than themselves from finding the ship. “Think about it, right, this is a huge find for anyone, with potentially devastating technologies onboard, or half a hundred dead skeletons adrift in the middle of nowhere.” The possible discovery of the missing experimental starship has generated excitement and anticipation in the Alpha Quadrant. The search for this potential treasure trove is on, and many believe that Starfleet will go to great lengths to prevent the starship from falling into the wrong hands. 11. SEYTOXAL, GAMMA QUADRANT — Humans say love is the universal language, Ferengi say money and Klingons say the cry of battle. While these opinions may or may not have validity, there is no doubt that throughout the galaxy no medium is more common to express ideas, feelings and stories than music. From Klingon opera to the orchestral masterpieces of the Terrans or the sublime sound of the Vulcan lyre, all cultures seem drawn to creating music. So it should be no shock that denizens of the Gamma quadrant love their music too. What might be surprising is the newest figure on the Gamma quadrant music scene may just be an Alpha Quadrant invader. The Zet hosts the platform Tidbitter, a communications forum for people all over the quadrant. A recent look at Tidbitter showed nearly 11 million references to Dr Sevrin. That’s 3 million more references than Zet strong man Tolo’Sal’Lat’Ut’Kel’Tras’Unt’Blt Anroc got in the same period. Dr Sevrin has no Tidbitter presence, but fans have opened multiple tidbits sharing performance videos, audio recordings, pictures and stories of their encounters with the mysterious musician. The performer has been seen on the waystations of Port Coray and Port Loray and at numerous venues on Seytoxal. Most describe Dr Sevrin as male, but descriptions beyond that vary wildly. Some describe him as an older, grey-haired human. Others say he is spotted like a tiger or leopard. Still, others maintain he has blue skin. His instrument of choice is a Terran Guitar, either electric or acoustic. The songs he performs are mostly cover songs of Terran songs from the late 20th century. Songs people have reported hearing include “Money for Nothing” originally by Dire Straits, “Renegade” originally by Styx, “Bizarre Love Triangle” originally by Psychedelic Furs and “Maggie’s Farm” originally by Bob Dylan. By all accounts, Dr Sevrin travels alone and recruits local musicians to accompany him where he plays. Like a musical Robin Hood, he generally donates any compensation he receives to a local charity. This reporter recently travelled to music hotspot Xingala Druman on Seytoxal where Dr Sevrin had reportedly played the Grand Casbah the night before. Neither Dr Sevrin nor the band who played with him, Bovek’s Beats, could be found. But locals claimed the Dr. performed one song that brought down the house. Recordings on Tidbitter showed it to be a rendition of “Bizarre Love Triangle”. One person present for the show was Lieutenant Salo Nesre, of the Federation starship USS Oumuamau NCC-81226. “Dr Sevrin has a style that is somehow both classic and unique. His singing and playing are a delight and I look forward to attending future concerts.” And when commenting on Dr Sevrin’s appearance, Nesre stated, “He’s as uniquely handsome as his music. I could not give a description that would do him justice.” The post Mysterious musician Dr Sevrin takes the Gamma Quadrant by storm appeared first on Federation News Service. View the full article
  12. TRINITY CITY, STARBASE 118 — The galaxy’s top speed racers are gearing up for Round 5 of the Jenatris Cloud 500. However, with rumors of engine upgrades installed on Glirash’s craft, the competition is sure to be fierce. “I am confident in my abilities to claim the championship title,” declares Glirash Voorsh, also known as “Mighty Gorn,” as he sets his sights on dethroning last season’s champion, V’Nar. The straight-faced Vulcan V’Nar is a Jenatris Cloud 500 ‘Ace’ having won his fifth title in 2394. He followed this with further title wins in 2396 and 2397, missing out on the second half of the 2395 season due to spinal surgery after a horrific crash in Round 7. V’Nar will be looking to claim his eighth title this season but will have to keep a close eye on Glirash who currently sits securely in second place on the points leaderboard. Having been crowned champion in 2395, Glirash is now chasing his own Ace status this season and is well-positioned to do so with rumored engine upgrades installed by his team now being put to the test. “I can’t disclose any technical details about the upgrades yet, but I can tell you that it feels good,” said Glirash when questioned about the engine upgrades. “The responsiveness is greater, the immediate power much smoother. She’s a real race winner now.” V’Nar, on the other hand, declined to provide any predictions for round five or give any comments. Tuula Venthar, who placed third in the previous round, had this to say about the Vulcan racer: “I think V’Nar is a formidable opponent, but I believe Glirash has what it takes to take him down.” Stay tuned for further updates as Thunderbolt Sports Report brings you the latest sports news from around the galaxy, including coverage of Tetraball, Speed-Racing, Ice-Hockey, and more. 13. PROXIMA CENTAURI – The “Taking it to the BetaMax” tour, featuring musician Jerrica, kicked off with a sold-out show in Proxima Centauri and will continue on to Kitomer, Risa, Deep Space 4, and R’ongovia, though tickets are becoming scarce at each venue. Jerrica exploded into the Federation music scene in 2393 with her hit song “Do You Split my Infinity” and has been a consistent success ever since. Her live performances feature a unique holographic band and interactive special effects that must be seen to be fully appreciated. In the past five years, Jerrica has become the most well-known artist in the wabi-sabi-pops genre, a style first popularized by Terran Andorian performer J’nade J’kosroth, whom Jerrica cites as a major influence. “Their music was just outrageous – truly, truly outrageous. And we’ve tried to bring that same intensity and glamour to every performance,” Jerrica said in a recent interview. Concert-goer, Lirien of Risa, said “Jerrica’s performance was out of this world. The holographic band and special effects were mind-blowing. I’ve never seen anything like it before.” Another concert-goer, Zorath of Kitomer, said “I’ve been a fan of Jerrica for years and seeing her live did not disappoint. Her energy and stage presence were electric. I can’t wait for her next tour.” And according to a concert-goer, Nara of Proxima Centauri “It was an unforgettable experience, Jerrica’s music is so powerful and her live performance is truly mesmerizing. I’m already counting down the days for her next tour.” For those who miss the BetaMax tour, plans are in the works for an Alpha Quadrant tour next year, starting with a concert on Betazed. Additional venues are still being determined. The post Time Running Out to See Popular Concert Star appeared first on Federation News Service. View the full article
  14. SHEMSH, PAR’THA EXPANSE – Construction of a new Federation colony in the Par’tha Expanse is nearing completion, drawing excitement from Starfleet officers and civilian consultants as they flock to Shemsh, the chosen location for the new settlement. The project was first announced last July, when Captain Mei’konda and his crew met with representatives from the Caaradian Houses to negotiate the location of the outpost. Following the successful agreement, engineering teams transported materials to Shemsh, a class M planet in the Oscion Sector, and began building the colony. Comprised mostly of rainforests, the planet has been praised as an ideal location for a new colony in the region. Tomas Rai, the lead civilian engineering consultant for the colony, stated, “The humidity can be a bit intense when working long hours, but the view is absolutely spectacular.” The colony, currently under the command of Dominion War hero Lieutenant Commander Sherhr Th’quosral, features several unique amenities such as a central garden and embassy compounds for major players in the region, as well as commercial districts that bring together the unique offerings of various species. Merchants and tradespeople from around the sector are eager to secure their space in the new colony, with one merchant, Saldar, exclaiming, “It’s the opportunity of a lifetime. A Ferengi would have to be a fool to let this sort of profit pass him by.” In addition to the planet-side amenities, Shemsh Orbital-Alpha, a maintenance facility similar to Jupiter Station, will provide a crucial resupply and repair outpost for Federation ships and allies in the area. Several ships, including the USS Diligent, the USS Yanktonai, and the Par’tha Expanse flagship USS Chin’toka, have been permanently assigned to the colony for its protection. Lieutenant Commander Th’quosral commented on the challenges faced during the construction, stating, “The journey out here was anything but uneventful. While Captain Mei’konda was able to successfully fight off the attacking fleet, the attack itself only highlights the need for increased security and protection.” The situation is ongoing and we will continue to provide updates on this developing story. 15. QO’NOS — Representatives from the Federation have travelled to Qo’Nos, the Klingon homeworld, to discuss the possibility of a joint science task force in the Azure Nebula, an area of space that has not yet been extensively researched. The delegation, led by Betazoid Dr Bali, was extended the invitation by the House of Mogh with the goal of increasing data exchange between the Federation and the Empire. According to Klingon representative Molugh, the primary motivation for this venture is political. “The Azure Nebula occupies a region of space that is both within Federation and Klingon space. As such, both nations share a responsibility to ensure no dangers lurk in that region of space,” Molugh stated. The proximity of the nebula to Qo’Nos and recent reports of Orion ambushes near the Neutral Zone have made it important for the Empire to investigate and protect scientific vessels in the area. In fact, both Starfleet and the Klingon Defense Force have lost ships in the Nebula’s vicinity in recent months. Dr Bali has agreed to the talks with the Klingons, stating “The Azure Nebula is a region of space that is of a mystery to Starfleet Science. With agreement from the Klingons on the grounds of defensive and reconnaissance capabilities, we could assure the science teams in the region and protect them from any known and unknown dangers lurking there.” The proximity of the Azure Nebula to Romulan territory has also raised questions about the Empire’s potential involvement in the joint venture. However, Romulan Dr Galvia, a renowned astrochemist, has denied any attribution. “The Azure Nebula lies beyond Romulan space, and the Star Empire has no interest in providing any assistance,” Dr Galvia stated in response to a hail from Dr Bali. He did, however, add, “if any enemy vessels should cross from the Azure Nebula into Romulan space, it can be assured that it will receive an immediate reaction from the Romulan defense forces.” Starbase 118, the closest starbase to the Azure Nebula, has not yet confirmed any operations in the region. However, given the station’s purpose as a trade hub and diplomatic forum, it can be assumed that their involvement would focus on smooth cooperation with the Klingons. A Starbase 118 spokesperson, Alka, confirmed that they will be closely monitoring the Klingon’s movements. Molugh indicated that if the venture is successful, further cooperation, at least from the House of Mogh, could be possible with Starfleet under the right conditions. Dr Bali responded to these indications by reaffirming the Federation’s intent for advancing their knowledge of the galaxy, with Klingon aid if possible. 16. DAYSTROM INSTITUTE – A recent paper published today in ‘Xenoarcheology In The Galaxy’ alleged a war occurred roughly 202,000 years ago in a region now called the Thiaki Region, to explain the unusual sensor readings in the area and the early stellar deaths. It also noted the similarity between the Thiaki Region and the Shoals, with both regions having restrictions on high warp speeds and unusually dense radiation fields. This study, led by the Daystrom Institute, included several starships performing studies and research, plus the use of deep-space probes to build a complex picture of the lingering radiation and other subspace and spatial anomalies. One region of interest was the Desolate Void in the Thiaki region, a planetary nebula with nothing but white dwarfs, neutron stars, and two black holes. “The existing models of subspace collapse could not explain this,” said Keisa Taiga, a doctor of Stellar Dynamics at the Daystrom Institute. “Several xenoarchaological digs were returning interesting results, so we thought to perform some follow-up studies to figure out if we could find out any more information.” The study, which has taken several years, indicated the presence of weapons capable of destroying a star, although such conclusions, Taiga warned, were preliminary, as many other studies will need to be done before a true understanding of what happened in the region, is possible. The Federation Science Council keeps working on a formal petition to Starfleet Command for more science ships in both the Shoals and Thiaki Region, which currently have speed and mass displacement restrictions. “It’s unlikely that Starfleet will scramble more ships to the Shoals, given the tense political situation there, but it’s possible,” says Professor Emil Arbelaez, the current chairman of political science at Pike City University, located on Cestus III. “We simply do not have the ships to investigate every tantalizing result, as much as we wish we did.” When approached for a comment, Starfleet Command would only say that until the petition is complete, they cannot comment on unofficial requests. 18. ANDOR — A new report warns that the Andorian homeworld has continued to increase in temperature despite new government efforts to reverse the trend. Chief ecologist of the Andorian Science Institute, Shyvin Ch’Vokyris recently published a devastating report revealing the unsuccess of the Andorian government’s attempts at controlling Andor’s climate during what is now an 18-month-long heatwave. Attempts to shield the moon from further warming included significant shielding of the surface from solar rays, and researchers are falling back on more intrusive methods. “If it’s not coming from outside, it’s coming from inside,” stated the Chief ecologist Ch’Vokryis, in his paper. The Andorian government has since restricted the use of Geothermal power – Andor’s main energy source, leaving households and businesses alike with only half of what’s usually available. This is hoping this may level out the process of what is now known on Andor as “The Thawing”. “They say this is one of the longest heat waves yet, but these restrictions make it the coldest night our family has ever had,” reported Zh’Liela, an Andorian civilian, in response to the new rationing of Geothermal energy. Many others have similar views on the restrictions, beginning to stir and call threats if the Andorian government does not change this, calling the rationing an “invasion of resources” and “an event that defies all Federation values”. All that hope it they will not need these restrictions much longer. The Aenar living closer to the Moon’s poles have created geothermal restrictions of their own, after a key corridor in the ice thawed enough to enclose upon itself, leaving several Aenar and visitors stranded until the ice could be excavated, only freed after several days of tedious work as not to cause more damage to the now unstable tunnels. Several Aenar have resorted to facing the cold that is left and living on the surface after such an event, scared they may be trapped in their homes again. Dr Ch’Vok will have his next report published in a few weeks’ time whether these attempts at controlling Andor’s climate make an impact for the better, or for the worse. 19. When someone killed her family, Vaxa Ral was in exile. The legal heir to the Ninth House of Betazed – stripped of her home by her vindictive and manipulative parents and removed of her rights by the combined might of six other Houses – could do nothing but watch from afar as Dominion-led attacks destroyed her family home, along with all who dwelled there. To this day, it remains a pile of charred rubble – a testament to the ‘scorched earth’ politics of Betazed’s ruling class who have no interest in seeing this ‘troublesome’ house restored. Born in 2312 to Kirilow and Alacem Ukinix – then heads of the Ninth House, Vaxa quickly learned that she and her siblings were little more than pawns in a long-running political game. Over the course of centuries, the House of Wealth (as it was known then) received lands from other Houses eager to see it developed by the resource-rich ‘treasurers’. No reliable records of these deals were available – but what is known is that in the early 24th Century, the Third, Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, Tenth, and Twelfth Houses demanded their lands returned. The Ninth refused. And thus began a saga of vengeance, manipulation, and scandal that would shake the foundations of Betazed’s nobility for nearly a century. “The Houses used to be far more cordial and helpful to each other,” explains Keehani Ukinix – Vaxa’s granddaughter, who now serves as a First Secretary within the Federation Diplomatic Corps. However, “with mounting pressure, the Ukinix family became defensive and consequently ruthless in their behaviour.” Keehani, and indeed, every living descendant of the Ninth House of Betazed, seems to have accepted their family’s role in the conflagration. The desire to hold on to their power over the other Houses seems to have died with the last true Matriarch and her husband in the Dominion bombings of the Ninth House estate. “There’s no doubt that some Houses centuries ago transferred land to the Ninth House,” elaborates Vaxa, looking over the ruins of her old life. “I ask myself now, ‘does it matter? What is best for Betazed?’” Mother Vaxa, now 87, has never seen justice. It was during this most challenging time that six other ‘noble’ Houses determined to reap their own rewards of the shattered Ninth. Buried in the wreckage of her former life, the grief of loss, and legal proceedings, they forced Vaxa to concede her authority as the rightful Matriarch of the Ninth House in 2376. Since then, the House has been administered by representatives of these other dominant Houses and their own private interests. “They never let me have a chance,” elaborated Ral. “I think they wanted to make sure a Ukinix would never make waves again.” The ‘waves’ Ral refers to involve a series of scandalous attempts by her parents to escape land-rights litigation through seduction and marriage, using their own children as pieces to be played and traded. Chief among those in the line of fire was Astradem (Astrad) Ukinix – Vaxa’s younger brother. “Vaxa… and I weren’t children,” he shared over a glass of wine at his vineyard on Earth. “We were tools in Mother and Father’s power games.” Astrad, now 80, split himself from the Ukinix family of Betazed long ago after tensions with his parents reached a boiling point during his early twenties. “They used me and my sisters in any way they could to make the other Houses back off,” he elaborated. The straight facts are that, in 2341, Astrad Ukinix – at the behest of his parents – befriended and seduced prominent members of several other Houses in an effort to garner their favour. A directive that would prove not only ultimately unsuccessful but would, in fact, contribute to the splintering and eventual downfall of the Ninth House. Keehani seems to have come to terms with it. “In 2341, he was having two affairs,” she related matter-of-factly. “One with the Matriarch of the Fourth House and one with the Matriarch of the Tenth… the other houses didn’t receive it well.” A champion of justice for her grandmother’s cause, fighting diligently within the Betazed justice system to re-establish her House’s independence, Keehani Ukinix is as sharp-witted as she is determined. “It’s not like those Matriarchs didn’t know what they were doing,” she points out unabashedly. Once Kirilow and Alacem’s scheming had caught up with them, they devised one final ploy – to arrange marriages between their children and eligible suitors in one of their most ardent detractors, the Sixth House of Betazed. Only Astrad and Vaxa were done with serving as their parents’ political pawns by this point. “My parents arranged a betrothal from Astradem to a Daughter from the Sixth House, to stop the legal action,” Vaxa explains, soberly. “He refused, and left Betazed for good.” Vaxa was not spared this cajoling, either. “After that, my mother offered me for betrothal to the Sixth House along with a sizable amount of land… It was always about land, never about their children.” But Vaxa and her brother had each, independently, found something worth more to them than land, familial acceptance, or political power. “Love,” announces Astrad, a smile on his face. His wife of nearly 60 years, Hayley – who hails from Earth and is the true owner and operator of the Terra Tanunda vineyard in Australia – first drew Astrad’s eye as the result of a University research project. “We fell in love, I left my life behind, and here I am.” When Kirilow learned that her daughter, Vaxa, had also found love with an employee of the Ninth House – Itum Ral – and would not marry to protect the family’s assets, she did everything but strip the Matriarch Ascendant of her title. “She knew it would weaken them in the future,” she elucidates. “So instead, they gave me a small amount of land in the Piri Islands and told me to live there – and stay there until they felt I was ready to return.” Only that return would never happen. Instead, the Dominion waged war on the Federation. Vaxa Ral would watch, in isolation on the Piri Islands, as her planet, her family, her Imzadi, and her son were systematically erased – followed by the vestiges of her lineage that remained as the other Houses swooped in to ‘declaw’ the disenfranchised Matriarch. “They punished my grandmother for her heritage,” asserts Keehani. “She was never given the chance to prove herself as a Matriarch… the nobles of six Houses decided for my grandmother what was best for her, when in truth, it’s what was best for them.” What was best for them, evidently, has been to sweep this entire matter under the proverbial rug. For decades, they handled this matter in quiet legal forums accessible only to the upper echelons of Betazoid society; the conclusions neatly tucked into unassuming footnotes in the historical record. Were it not for the tenacity of Vaxa’s granddaughter, Keehani, and the diligent research of modern legal professionals, the Ninth House may itself have wound up as little more than a footnote. “It’s about justice,” explains Vaxa of her granddaughter’s petition to restore the Ninth House’s nobility. “Justice for me, justice for Keehani, and Astradem, and his family from Earth.” When prompted, Astrad describes his once-estranged sister thusly: “I think she will be a very different kind of Matriarch… More grounded in reality,” adding that she and her granddaughter “have very different ideas about what a House should be.” When pressed for details, Vaxa offered a picture of what a restored Ninth House may look like, “If we are successful in our petition… the Ninth House will be very different from what it traditionally was. I will ensure that whatever land the House has left, which isn’t much, is used for agricultural science students by different Federation Universities…” – a task which she intends to carry out with Astrad’s wife, Hayley Ukinix, now that their families have reconnected. Now, after two years of delays, the hearing to determine the fate of the Ninth House of Betazed took place in October of 2399. With newly uncovered evidence on their side, and decades to consider the mistakes of the past which led their family to this point, there seems to be little doubt that – regardless of the outcome – these fearsome women will keep on fighting until the bitter end for a better future. Now, for better or worse, they do so in the public eye. “Whether our Forum petition is successful or not, Keehani and I will still have our extended family,” reflected Ral as the sun sets on the ruins of the Ukinix estate. “It is taking time, but our family wounds are healing. With or without a Ninth House, the Ukinix name will live on and be known as a proper family.” The post The Summerside Report: Ninth House, Second Chance appeared first on Federation News Service. 20. BAJOR – The long-awaited return of the ancient sculpture “Ohalu’s Light” to Bajor has been met with distrust and protests after it was revealed to be a forgery. The sculpture, believed to be a representation of a long-extinct ancestor of the Bajoran people and bearing the last prophecies of Ohalu himself, was eagerly anticipated by members of the Ohalavaru sect and hotly contested by Vedek protesters. Among the countless artefacts and artworks stolen during the Occupation and sold to the highest bidder, few can be considered as valuable and controversial as “Ohalu’s Light” – an ancient sculpture of a long-extinct ancestor of the Bajoran Pachitrod underneath which Ohalu himself etched the last of his prophecies. Ohalu’s Light’s return to Bajor and display in the newly erected Unity Temple has been anticipated by many – members of the Ohalavaru sect were eager to attempt a translation of the millennia-old symbols, while several Vedeks protested against the sculptures exhibition. But when Torjer Lah, Professor of historical anthropology and self-confessed Ohalu truth-seeker, travelled to Raijalla Valley’s Unity Temple, he quickly determined that someone had aged artificially the displayed sculpture and therefore was not Ohalu’s Light. Is this a simple misunderstanding? Has the priceless artefact never been recovered, or has it been stolen and exchanged for a forgery? “I can certify that what we sent to Bajor was, in fact, the sought-after piece of art.”, claims Professor Eko Hagatua, who headed the taskforce responsible for recovering Bajoran artefacts. “It is probably worth mentioning that Ohalu’s claims that the Bajoran Prophets are an alien species and not ‘Gods’ are considered heresy by many and that there are certain individuals on Bajor who would prefer Ohalu’s Light to remain lost.” The protests have been overshadowed by the celebrations of Bajor’s eleventh anniversary of joining the Federation, giving the Vedek Assembly and the Chamber of Ministers time to issue an official statement. It remains to be seen if the Ohalavaru will accept their explanation. The post Ancient Bajoran Sculpture “Ohalu’s Light” Revealed to be Forgery appeared first on Federation News Service. 22. MARS, SOL SYSTEM — Broadcasting interactive sessions live, Lunarsphere Interactive Holo Producers are set to bring the first holonovel soap opera to the holodeck in real-time. “All the Quadrants Species” is the newest brainchild of creator Gree Edybon R’ne, famed for his concoctions of reality holo-novelisation and social experimentation on audiences throughout the galactic region. Diverting from R’ne’s non-traditional approach to the medium, the holo-soap opera promises enticing and interesting characters, living together on a small asteroid. Taking part in an introductory preview into the space opera, the central theme running throughout is the inclusion of multiple prominent races from the Alpha Quadrant into a small area and follows the lives of the colonist inhabitants as they develop and grow. Included among those are a family of Terrans from a non-denominated planet, Andorians, Klingons, Vulcans, Ferengi, Cardassians, and Rodulans, all customisable and determined by the user when implementing the conditions of the program. “Not wanting to give too much away here, but we have included a fair few surprises in the first episode, to really get you involved with the characters from the offset,” stated R’ne, in the interview given at Lunarsphere Studios. “The first episode includes a character by the name of Gotram, recently fertilised by his Andorian lover, while his Klingon mate Lat’eth hunts in a new gargantuan hunting spot on a nearby planetoid.” Other plot lines include Terran householder Mick “Mucky” McGuire planting evidence of a parasitic infection in the local Vulcan water supply, the Ferengi at Subdome Seven B sell Subdome Seven A and watching as a family of Cardassians are besieged by the “new” owners – a family of Rodulans – moving in beside them. However, not all critics are impressed with the increased popularity of the holonovel soap opera. Raising important questions about viewers’ involvement with the genre, Professor Raadress Ror of the University of Betazed has complained about the realism of the relationships viewers can develop with the interactive characters, increased escapism, influencing identity construction, the emotional experience undertaken by the viewer, and the value this provides for entertainment. “The issues raised in this genre are not limitless,” Ror expressed during the last broadcast lecture. “However, what we are seeing is an increase in the plot’s realism design, involving the viewer at a fundamental level, through which some viewers can struggle to separate the contextual fantasy from reality itself. This is dangerous for adolescents during their formative years, who can develop attachments to characters, viewing the written lives of the interactive personalities as positive influences, when the reality might be entirely different.” Regardless of the critical response, Lunarsphere Interactive is throwing its weight behind the title and is urging early adopters to judge the fully customisable series for themselves. 23. GALEN – A Markalian freighter was seized in the Talarian system by Starfleet officers from the USS Ravana after an investigation determined they had been smuggling contraband. On a routine patrol of the Talarian system, the USS Ravana intercepted a freighter flying erratically, eventually forced to disable its systems so a boarding operation could be started to investigate the aberrant behaviour. One of the crew, a Ferengi merchant named Olarad, piqued attention by attempting to bribe Starfleet officers with extremely restricted contraband. Upon impounding the ship, they found cases of Romulan Ale and Tallonian crystals. Federation Security is asking any sentient who may have had contact to contact them with clues about how they were acquired. In addition, speaking from Starfleet Command, “We are still seeing pirates operating across the verge of the Federation, and we urge all citizens and governments to maintain proper security as we work to hunt down these pirates.” Starfleet Command Lieutenant Mer Kava remarked. “The smugglers captured will be prosecuted according to the law.” In the meantime, famed archaeologist Kynon Diseth, from the Independent Archaeologists’ Guild, will lead a small task force to return the crystals and to perform some further archaeological research. “We are providing additional security to protect them from any would-be raiders. Wouldn’t want to lose these to the wrong hands, would we?” The post Class 2 Freighter found smuggling Tallonian Crystals and Romulan Ale appeared first on Federation News Service. 24. MIDOS V – Reporting from Midos V Satellite City Spaceport, the captain of the private commercial vessel Zosall, is under arrest following the rescue of Cardassian crew from an adrift shuttlecraft. Initially denied entry to the spaceport, unable to produce the required travel documents, Bajoran captain Saari Shad forced her vessel through regulated checking zones to disembark rescued passengers. When questioned regarding the welfare of the passengers and how she came to have them onboard, Saari handed over collected scans from the downed shuttlecraft location. “Our ship ran into extreme difficulties close to Murasaki 312,” explained Sohilk, Cardassian crew member of the civilian shuttlecraft Driava. “We cut all power to our engines and set adrift for several days before Captain Saari found us. Our gratitude for our rescue cannot be understated, and we are very much looking forward to returning home.” Seven crew members of the Driava received medical care and attention at the Spaceport sickbay facilities, given temporary accommodation and advised not to leave the Spaceport until investigations have concluded. When the Driava left Makus III, their manifest reported fifteen crew onboard, so questions were raised regarding the eight missing crew members. Protesters acted quickly; those objecting to the apparent disregard for the strict rules and regulations of Satellite City Spaceport’s docking procedures, and those in support of the “heroic” actions taken by the Bajoran commercial captain. “Who gives a flying chalice about travel documents?” City Engineer Aikn Reta gave his opinion when approached for comment. “Saari did what she had to do. We haven’t seen bravery like that since the war and we need more of it. If they throw the PADD at her, they won’t know what’s coming.” Officials of Satellite City Spaceport have yet to comment on the proceedings and several leaks from the local judiciary council suggest there are underlying reasons for the prosecution to be expedited. Protests will continue on the satellite as Saari awaits trial and the Zosall remains grounded. More on this story as it develops. 25. EARTH, SOL SYSTEM – A beautiful banquet was held Friday for Commander Ferirk, who has dedicated the last three decades of his life to teaching diplomatic relations at Starfleet Academy’s main campus in San Francisco. Ferirk, who served aboard such notable ships as the Endeavour-A, the Braveheart, and the Brixham, stepped back from his duties as Starfleet officer in 2369, to imbibe young minds with the wisdom of his experience and adventures. “It is only logical that cadets, during their training for a position aboard some of Starfleet’s finest vessels, gain a perspective on the dangers they face in the performance of their duties,” Ferirk commented. The Academy lauded the Vulcan instructor for his resolution of several conflicts that could have led to either war or serious diplomatic incidents. His unique perspective and insights into the minds of other species have given many around him a tactical advantage when initiating first contacts with new species or resolving feuds between two species. “Damn things looked like they were going to rip our heads off until he stepped in,” former crewmate Lieutenant B’Jean Tu’tado commented on a particular mission, where they could observe the Vulcan officer in action. “The Captain had to pick his jaw up off the floor when the whole thing was over.” When asked about his next adventure, Ferirk expressed a desire to return home for a sabbatical, stating that he would like to spend some time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. “Though my career with Starfleet is far from concluded, I believe a brief period of reflection is overdue,” he stated. Not only did Ferirk receive acknowledgement from his fellow instructors at the Academy. The Vulcan instructor also had to accept an abundance of congratulations from his former students, who were also present at the banquet. If you wish to congratulate the Commander on his illustrious career or simply send a thank you, please direct all communications through his teaching assistant.
