  5. TALOS SECTOR — Starfleet Command reports that the USS Constitution-B has gone missing during a routine survey mission. After successfully ridding their ship of Borg nanites, the Constitution had traveled to Starbase 11 to begin shore leave. Many of the crew took to the surface, including the ship’s commanding officer Cmdr. Jalana Rajel and LtCmdr. T’Mar who had some catching up to do, while others enjoyed a game of poker on the ship. Everyone enjoyed taking the time to relax and forget about the Borg situation. Repairs were made to the ship and additional scans were run to guarantee that no Borg nanites remained on the ship. After shore leave, the Constitution headed out to the Talos Sector to conduct a routine sensor sweep. By all accounts, the patrol was going as planned and had been entirely uneventful. In a message to Captain Faranfey of the USS Doyle, Cmdr. Rajel reported that all sensor readings were standard with no anomalies. Shortly after the message went out, however, Starfleet lost contact with the Constitution. After several attempts to contact the Constitution were unsuccessful, additional ships were sent out to the Constitution’s last known location, where they discovered that the Constitution was no longer there. With no debris found thus far, Starfleet representatives are hopeful that the Constitution has not been destroyed. Sensors have found what appears to be the remnants of a subspace field, which may or may not have contributed to the Constitution’s disappearance. “I want to assure everyone, especially the families of those serving aboard the Constitution, that we are doing everything to locate her,” said Starfleet Public Affairs officer Commander A.J. Ciaravolo in San Francisco during a press briefing. He added that Starfleet has dispatched two vessels, the USS Cronkite and the USS Bouazizi, to join the search already underway for the missing Galaxy class vessel and the 1,000 crew members aboard. 6. “Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” For 2016, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the mind-blowing and imagination-igniting effect those words have Simon & Schuster announcing the return of an opportunity for fans to help create a part of the Star Trek universe. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fan fiction writing contest was a yearly contest that drew short stories from the fans for publication between 1998 and 2007. For the 2016 contest 10 grand prize winners will be chosen to have their stories published in print and ebook formats. The stories must be about main – or recurring – characters that appeared in television or films before 2009. The two 1st prize winners will also be awarded self-publishing packages from Archway Publishing. A deadline of January 15, 2016 is set for submissions by residents of the U.S. only, with the winners to be announced in March. For those of you with interests in visual arts, fans will soon be asked to submit artwork for the cover of the book. Additional rules and information about how to enter can all be found at Star Trek Books. Check it out today! 7. Last month we visited the idea that our favorite Star Trek characters could make some pretty awesome additions to some of our other favorite science fiction shows or movies. On the heels of that question, we will now consider the opposite. With so many well loved shows and movies out there, each with their own beloved characters, it might be easy to blur some of the lines to see crossovers in both directions. What? Is that Han Solo at the helm console? Is the Doctor over at science? This week’s poll of the week question asks, if you were putting together the perfect crew, and you could pull over one character from another ‘universe’, who would you choose and what role would they play? Consider the chaos that could ensue! There really is no limit to who you could pick, but be sure to let us know why you chose what you chose in the comments below the poll! 8. MENTHAR CORRIDOR – Thanks to the efforts of the USS Gorkon, the USS Tharsis has been saved from the dual perils of a gravimetric anomaly and an infection of deadly parasites. What started as a rescue attempt quickly turned into a game of cat and mouse, due to the infection of the Tharsis‘s crew by an unusual parasite known as Sarpedionital gondii. Known for the rampant paranoia and homicidal tendencies it produces in its hosts, it is notoriously incurable and deadly — one outbreak in Cardassian territory prompted the Union to sterilise the entire planet rather than risk its spread. With communications severed, and the Tharsis‘s shields raised to prevent any attempts at beam-out, the Gorkon‘s three away teams were fighting for survival. After escaping several booby-traps, the team led by Captain Quinn Reynolds succumbed to an ambush and were held at phaser-point by Commander Walter Brunsig and a number of junior Tharsis officers. Thanks to the ingenuity of Lieutenant Ayiano Sevo, who managed to disable the ambusher’s phasers, the Gorkon crew were able to overwhelm and capture their assailants. “No, I don’t want to talk about it. Now buzz off,” said Commander Walter Brunsig, declining to comment on his actions aboard the Tharsis. Elsewhere on the vessel, Lieutenant Cory Stoyer had taken command of his away team, after the Gorkon‘s XO fell to phaser fire. Searching for a safe place to hide their injured colleague, they encountered Doctor Ana Mirovan, one of the Tharsis‘s complement of civilian scientists, who was unaffected by the parasites due to her Dokkaran physiology. After narrowly escaping a deadly hull breach caused by the anomaly, the team made their way toward deflector control. A team lead by Commander Alucard Vess were also in peril but managed to avoid one of the Tharsis‘s hunting parties and made their way toward the computer core. There, they were able to disable many of the ship’s internal defences and clear a path for Lt. Stoyer’s team. Meanwhile on the Gorkon, the newly-arrived Lt. Commander Chythar Skyfire worked with the bridge crew to reestablish communications and rescue the Tharsis from the anomaly. When communications were restored, the crew were able to coordinate their efforts once again. A plan was made and put into action to change the Tharsis‘s shield frequency to a known value, and the Gorkon was able to beam everyone aboard into quarantine, using the transporter biofilters to remove the parasites from anyone infected. With the medical staff kept busy with injuries, the quarantine and the post-traumatic stress of the surviving crew, the officers stationed on the bridge were able to disrupt the anomaly long enough to bring the damaged Tharsis in to tow. “A disaster? No. We saved the ship, its remaining crew and the surviving civilians. That’s forty-two men, women and children who would have died without our intervention,” said Captain Quinn Reynolds, denying an accusation that the rescue was disastrous. “Given the circumstances, we did remarkably well to manage it with only the one serious injury.” Docking at Astrofori One, the Gorkon‘s crew were rewarded with some well-earned shore leave. Several new crew were welcomed aboard, and Lt. Commander Skyfire was promoted from the position of medical officer to first officer. The crew look forward to an awards ceremony to be hosted in the holodeck, and rumours abound that it will be in the form of a costume party. 10. DEEP SPACE – After a very stressful, unexpected first mission, the crew of the USS Apollo-A enjoyed a well-deserved period of shore leave. After successfully realigning the ship into one physical reality, the crew of the USS Apollo (NCC-71669-A) found themselves in precarious situation. They had just survived a ghastly situation, one in which even an experienced crew would have tremendous difficulty. Not only had they survived, but they had pulled through the situation while having only known and worked together for a matter of hours. After confirming that the ship had completely realigned into the correct phase, Fleet Captain Kalianna Nicholotti gave word for the crew to begin assessing damage and getting the ship back in working order. The majority of the work was completed by the engineering crew, led by Lieutenant Commander Lluneh Walker, while the medical team led by Lieutenant Zinna tended to various medical needs throughout the ship. Once everything was back on track, Nicholotti gave one final order to her First Officer, Lieutenant Commander Alex Blair. “Commander Blair, schedule a meet and greet of some kind in the officers mess for tomorrow evening, and let everyone know,” she said. At that the crew was officially on a short leave. The shore leave began like almost any other leave with one exception: the majority of the Apollo’s crew barely knew one another. The crew began to partake in their own various leave pastimes, such as sleeping or heading to the ship’s bar. One pair of officers, Lieutenant T’Var Helling and Ensign Roshacari, even began a budding romance. As time continued to turn, the second day of leave quickly arrived meaning that the Apollo’s senior staff would be gathering for their social gathering. With preparations laid out, the Six Forward Lounge tastefully decorated, a couple buffets set, and the obligatory bar stocked, the party was ready to begin. The crew slowly trickled in and quickly split into groups, one at the bar and another near the center of the room. After a harrowing first day aboard the Apollo, it was time for her crew to get to know one another. 12. SKALUR EXPANSE – As part of Operation Knife Point, the USS Darwin-A launched the Jentar Assembly in an attempt to close a Prometheus-related rift. The Darwin had sent an away team to the surface of Brut III to investigate a distress signal when an unknown ship arrived in orbit. The Sicarian scout Swallow, knowing that the Darwin saw through their ruse and faced with the startling realization that the Federation has implemented Sicarian technology in the Jentar Assembly, dove into the atmosphere. Their intent was to retrieve the operatives trapped on the surface and escape to advise the organization of their disturbing find. Unable to stop them, the Darwin tractored the main satellite of the Assembly into its Containment Sphere for repairs. Concerned about the status of the away team with the scout ship entering the atmosphere, LtCmdr Icavoc was ordered to the away team’s shuttle to fly it to the team’s location for recall. The away team, in a confrontation with Duccio Turrisi over his Ash’lie prisoner Lyna Namid, managed to capture the Sicarian operative and save Namid while the rest of the aggressors were spirited away by the scout ship. The away team returned to the Darwin, just in time for the newly-repaired Assembly to successfully close the system’s rift. As the Darwin crew spoke with their mysterious Ash’lie guest, quick insight kept Turrisi from taking his suicide pill. With the mission complete, the Darwin returned to Deep Space 6 for some much needed rest and relaxation for the crew. Shore leave heralded the return of Captain Renos, cleared for duty after nir recovery from the injuries suffered from interrogation in the previous mission. The downtime for the crew was brightened by the announcement of a Naming Ceremony for LtJG Lyldra’s twins, born during the mission. Hosting a traditional Bolian ceremony, Lyldra and her husband’s Brell and Hars greeted all guests in the ship’s lounge. After gift giving and well wishes were complete, Dr. Janel Tarna was given the honor of announcing the birth father. Once identified, Brell then announced the names of the children: Linalu, a daughter named after Lyldra’s dearly departed mother, and son Renu. “He is named for our dear friend and captain Renos,” explained Lyldra, to Renos’s great honor. After a night of celebration, another event was announced to the crew. A dress uniform ceremony to be held on Deep Space 6 had the crew arrive to an elegantly attired room. Renos started off the ceremony by announcing Thomas’s promotion to full Commander and surprised the man by having his family present to do the honor of replacing his pip. The ceremony continued with promotions, departmental changes, and a multitude of ribbons for the crew’s accomplishments during the mission. With the formalities completed, the ceremony evolved into a celebration, and a new crewmember made his introductions around the room. Finally, Captain Renos received notification of an important event: the USS Triumphant, a Defiant class escort to the Darwin, had arrived at the station, as well as her new crew. Cmdr Thomas recalled the crew to prepare for imminent departure. The two ships have an important mission ahead of them as they head to their next stop: the Delta Quadrant. 13. There are a number of quotes from our favorite television shows that we can return to, inviting a flood of memories back about the episode and what we were doing in our day when we heard the words. Few shows have grown beyond that, but Star Trek is definitely one of them. Rather than having to stop and explain a scene to your friends or coworkers, it’s easy to let one of these popular phrases fly and get a response from nearly any audience. Even those who don’t consider Star Trek a part of their lives will recognize some of them. Perhaps that is why Trek had such an amazing following throughout the years. It wasn’t just the progressive attitudes and the willingness to delve into the unknown both in the show’s reality, and in our own psyche, but the manner in which the words resonated through multiple generations. And that, of course, brings us to our poll of the week. What is your favorite famous Trek saying? Let us know if it’s one of those we love, or if you have your own, and don’t forget to join the conversation and tell us when you put your favorite phrase to work in the discussion that follows. 15. In an effort to simplify administration of the wiki, the Wiki Ops Team is implementing a change to the page naming conventions. We’re ditching the long-standing “backwards” page names for characters, like “Wolf, Tristan” in favor of a clearer and more straightforward format that more closely matches other wiki. The Wiki Ops Team will slowly be making this change to existing character pages over the next two months. New characters should be named this way going forward. Characters that are currently inactive in the fleet do not need to be renamed, but can be on a case-by-case basis as time and desire permits. The new guidelines are as follows: Title characters “First Name Last Name,” like: “Tristan Wolf“. If your character is a Bajoran, such as Kira Neyrs, even though Kira is the last name, you would title it Kira Neyrs. The same goes for any culture where last name first name is written. Like so: “Ishikawa Keiko“.Of note, you should probably not include middle names. It is exceeding unlikely they will be commonly referred by it.For characters that have more specificity in the name add it in parenthesis:Mirror universe characters get (mirror)Alternate universe characters get (alternate)Clones get (clone x), where x is the number. Try to resist putting descriptors there – for example, if you have Tristan Wolf (good clone), and the clone becomes evil, that name may become confusing!Double characters (such as Bynar) should get something like 11001010 (01010111) to indicate they are a double character. For more information on our page-naming convention, see the “naming pages properly” article on our wiki. 16. STARBASE 118 — A Romulan terrorist group calling themselves the Ralaaram Ocala seeks to cripple StarBase 118 with homemade explosives. Starfleet teams found that the combination of two common chemicals – the exotic liquor “Gold Dew” and calcium trisulfanide, a terraforming fertilizer can be used to create a ‘sticky bomb.’ StarBase 118 conducted a full bomb sweep, removing several bombs from critical power relays and security junctions. They also apprehended one of the saboteurs that planted the bombs, putting the woman in the custody of the Black Tower. “Problem is, we don’t know how much of those materials the Romulans were able to buy, before we shut it down,” said Lt Commander Rhys Hayden of Starfleet customs. “We might still be seeing these bombs for years to come.” Both materials are now on the list of controlled and restricted chemicals, illegal to trade within the Federation without a permit. A Starfleet strike force team led by Lt Commander Kaitlyn Falcon was able to infiltrate civilian spaceport Miranda VII and prevent a large quantity of materials from falling into the hands of the Romulans. They were also able to apprehend key contacts from the organization selling bomb materials to terrorists. Starfleet hopes to glean more information from questioning the suspects. Meanwhile StarBase 118 hustles to tidy up and welcome back Captain Handley-Page from his Terran vacation, hoping he will overlook the scorch marks in the security section. Let’s take a look at how we did in September: The charts below display statistics through today, hence the lower numbers for October which has not yet completed. Applications were up in September, giving us one of our better months worth of recruiting in the past year. Graduations from the Academy were at about average. Google Search continues to be our main source of referrals, although word of mouth is, as always, an incredibly important part of our recruiting process! 18. TELDEN SYSTEM – The USS Avandar found themselves witness to a highly unusual birth. As the situation in orbit around Telden stabilised, things on the ground heated up immensely. The crew aboard the USS Avandar (NCC-80203) worked to establish contact with both the local forces and the unknown alien bioships in the area, whilst the away team attempted to deal with the casualties they found there – as well as the increasingly severe seismic activity beneath the city. After a great deal of effort, a partial translation of the aliens’ message was achieved, though it didn’t prove particularly enlightening. The need for some sort of understanding became even higher when the quakes rocking the surface began to cause severe damage, but the very unusual cause was located. Appearing to be of the same type of craft as the bioships in orbit, a much smaller vessel was in the process of attempting to breach the surface and take to the skies, though with unfortunate effects on the city that was in the way. Evacuating as many people as possible from the area by transporter, the Avandar was unable to get a solid lock on all members of the away team, which led to some of them being stuck on the ground amidst the rapidly rising panic, which led to Major Siris being injured by local security forces whilst he and Ensign Wilde were trying to explain their presence. Finally, the hatchling’s distress led to the risk of total destruction of the city, and Captain Vetri took the Avandar into the atmosphere in a low-level pass that permitted the use of tractor beams to clear the rubble blocking the newborn’s path. With that obstacle out of the way, the small bioship joined its fellows in orbit, and the whole group departed without any further attempt at communication. “Weirdest childbirth I ever saw,” Lieutenant JG Lian Li, an intelligence officer aboard the USS Avandar observed, “and definitely the messiest.” A mess that the Avandar’s crew quickly got to work helping the locals to deal with, providing medical and other emergency support as everyone tried to get to grips with the events that had just unfolded before them. 21. DURONIS II — The Laudean Naturalist Party attacked the Federation Embassy in an attempt to rid their planet of aliens that they believe will leave their planet in ruins. Balvido Gaev, a known Laudean crime boss, and Ahishma Chandra, leader of the Naturalist Party have combined forces to destroy the Federation Embassy. The first attack failed when Federation Intelligence reported a would-be bomber to the Marines, and he was tracked to a hotel room where he was captured. The second attack was more successful when 22 members of the Embassy crew were killed by a group of snipers during a beach party during shore leave. “Our crew didn’t know what hit them,” said Rear Admiral Toni Turner, commanding officer of the Duronis II Embassy. “The snipers were merciless, leaving them on the beach where they fell. We intend to find out who was behind the attacks, and with the permission of Laudean Prime Minster Vail Daysa, will apprehend them.” Later, after the would-be bomber was interrogated by Lieutenant JG Daniel Cain, the young lieutenant reported the fact that Chandra and Gaev were behind the attacks and where their stronghold was located. The prisoner did confirm that there were several anti-aircraft batteries in and around the compound but didn’t know how many exactly. Furthermore, the compound itself is protected by a forcefield with an external energy source, believed to be under Lake Gromati. At present Admiral Turner and her senior staff have taken shuttles to Govinda Province, determined to capture the two Laudean leaders. 24. We all know that when Star Trek originally made its debut, the uniform colors were a bit different than what we saw as the franchise developed. Like any good military, evolution came with time, and that included both the uniform style and the colors that were used for the different departments. Modern military uniforms have gone through their own evolution as well, though we see less in the inclusion of colors and more in the style. For Trek, though, colors have a very important significance – they tell us a person’s job. Between The Original Series and The Next Generation, command duty stations turned from gold to red, while engineering and security went from red to gold. Science and medical remained blue, but only for the time we know of. And that is what leads us into this week’s poll of the week! If you could recast the color of command again, what color would it be? Would you stick with the dark red that seems to command respect, or would you opt for something entirely different? Let us know what you’d choose, and comment on why below the poll! The post Poll of the Week: Colorblind appeared first on UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. View the full article
  25. STARBASE 118 — After witnessing the birth of Hemix II, a new planet at the intersection of the 4th dimension, the crew of USS Columbia has returned to spacedock. An attempt on the life of Commander Brek, Starfleet’s first Ferengi captain, headlined a variety of remarkable events aboard USS Columbia in the Skalur Expanse. Sent to investigate an island ecosystem on Hemix that appeared overnight, Columbia encountered pirates, assassins and creatures from the fourth dimension in an adventure that put the new captain and his crew to the test. A pirate leader, Chennel, was captured and incarcerated under Federation law following her vicious treatment of prisoners Lt. Commander Tyler Kelly, Lt. Theo Whittaker and Lt.jg Mirra Ezo. The three were awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained while imprisoned. “I have your away team as my prisoners, Commander. I thought I would let you see one of them… before I had him executed,” Chennel is reported to have threatened over comms, before claiming Hemix was her planet and demanding Columbia leave the region. While Chennel was captured and remanded into Federation custody, another attacker went free. The mysterious shapeshifter known as Que made an attempt on Brek’s life on the Ferengi’s own bridge. Que was cornered by several officers after a shipwide search, and rendered unconscious by a paralyzing agent released by Dr. Johanna MacLaren. Que later disappeared from custody on Starbase 118, and her whereabouts are unknown. It is thought she posed as a Columbia crewman for several months prior to the assassination attempt. Lt. Commander Kevin Breeman is being lauded for his discoveries in the fourth dimension that seems to intersect at the site of Hemix. While his research has yet to be released, scientists at the Daystrom Institute eagerly await Breeman’s remarkable findings. Breeman has been made Chief Science Officer aboard Columbia. Following their adventures, the crew headed to Echevar, a resort planet not far from Starbase 118. There, Commander Brek reserved a ski lodge as a reward for the crew’s hard work and dedication. Brek awarded his officers with ribbons for gallantry, bravery and discovery, as well as presenting a Prometheus Ribbon to the entire crew, and an Explorer’s Ribbon for their discoveries on Hemix, including the planet itself, which transformed into the new planet Hemix II as a result of its intersection with the fourth dimension. During the ceremony on Echevar, Ensigns Mirra Ezo, Antero Flynn and Diego Beyett were promoted to the rank of Lieutenant JG. More amazing discoveries and exciting adventures await the crew, with Columbia set to embark on a new mission soon.
