  1. EARTH SPACEDOCK — While enjoying shore leave at Earth Spacedock, the crew of the USS Apollo-A is recalled and quickly find out that not all is as it seems. The crew of the USS Apollo, NCC 71669-A, after completing a series of challenging missions, were enjoying a respite of shore leave on Earth Spacedock. After enjoying a formal meet and greet party to welcome aboard new crew and recognize the efforts of all, the crew began to follow their own routines while waiting for the Apollo’s Quantum Slipstream Drive to be replaced and declared fit for flight. Unfortunately for the crew, their plans were about to change. Shortly after the party, Fleet Captain Kalianna Nicholotti was briefed on a mission by Starfleet Command that needed the Apollo’s immediate attention. Nicholotti soon issued the order for the Apollo’s crew to return to the ship while much to the chagrin of the Apollo’s Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Commander Luna Walker, the spacedock’s engineering crews gave top priority to the Apollo’s repair work. Once the repairs were complete, Nicholotti summoned the senior staff to the briefing room and informed them of their mission. The Apollo was being sent to rendezvous with a contingent of delegates from the planet of Sharshay to discuss the possibility of them entering the Federation. After answering all the staff’s questions about the mission and discovery was shared. Black boxes had been found on the ship, which turned out to be tracking and recording devices. Someone was spying on the Apollo and her crew. Determined to complete their mission, the crew of the Apollo set about the task of departing spacedock and plotting a course for the nebula where they would meet the delegation. While the majority of the crew completed departure preparations, Commander David Cody led a small team in a mission to locate and disable the black boxes. Back on the bridge, Commander Alex Blair led the bridge crew through the final checks before departure. As Nicholotti entered, Blair moved to turn over the conn allowing the commanding officer to begin the mission. Instead, Nicholotti stood aside and simply said, “Commander, if you would do the honors?” The post Shore leave cancelled for crew of USS Apollo-A appeared first on UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. 2. Thanks to the incredible work of Cmdr. Roshanara Rahman of the Invicta, we’ve completely overhauled the area of our wiki on which we post our Community Awards, Badges, and Service Ribbons. All three types of commendations are now pulled together into the “Hall of Honor” portal. From there, you can select which type of commendation to view. The Community Awards area has been totally refreshed. Most notably, awards are now displayed in categories, and each category page shows the most recent winner. Each award also has its own page, on which you can see plaques with each winner. This brings to the forefront the most important names, ensuring that the most recent winners get the attention they deserve. You can still find the entire list of award recipients, which are now organized better for quicker reference. The Service Ribbons and Badges have also been updated slightly for ease of use. Thanks again to Cmdr. Rahman for all the hard work on this. We hope you find the changes useful! 3. MENTHAR CORRIDOR — The USS Gorkon has disappeared while on a routine survey mission. During a routine survey mission to Alpha Chionus V, the crew of the USS Gorkon took advantage of the serene and wintry environment to celebrate the festive season. Ice-skating, snowball fights, warm food and drink were all enjoyed, and Commander Vess ensured a special treat for the children aboard the Gorkon, in the form of a shuttlecraft holographically altered to look like Santa’s sleigh. Old friends and new faces alike took the opportunity to mingle and chat—and dodge the low-flying snowballs. Once back aboard the Gorkon, Captain Quinn Reynolds promoted Jansen Orrey in a private meeting to the rank of lieutenant junior grade with an accompanying transfer to the position of ship’s counsellor. Subsequently, the captain expressed her reluctance to hold or comply with another highly publicised award ceremony, choosing instead to show her appreciation to the crew by holding a private ceremony in the observation lounge of the USS Gorkon. Officers who went above and beyond the call of duty during the Astrofori One holodeck incident were awarded with various commendations. The Purple Heart went to Commander Alucard Vess, Lt. Commander Chythar Skyfire, Ensign Mitchell Shapiro, and Ensign Tonya Lang, who were all injured while trapped in the holodeck or during the subsequent pursuit of the Maquis Reborn. The Good Conduct Ribbon was awarded to Commander Alucard Vess, Lt. Commander Kael Tam, and Lieutenant Dar Elandra, who all conducted themselves an exemplary fashion while trapped inside a near-lethal section of the holodeck program. Commander Walter Brunsig was awarded with the Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Gold Lifesaving Ribbon for almost sacrificing his life in order to protect Captain Reynolds from an assassin’s bullet. Lieutenant (JG) Jansen Orrey and Lt. Commander Kael Tam were presented with the Silver Lifesaving Ribbon for practicing the art of medicine with virtually no equipment and under less-than-ideal circumstances during the holodeck crisis. The Innovation Ribbon was presented to Lieutenant JG Toni Lupo and Lieutenants Ayiana Sevo and Cory Stoyer for their quick thinking and ingenuity in rescuing the occupants of the Cardassian Embassy, who had been sealed inside and infected by a lethal virus. After a brief stopover at Astrofori One to take on specialist equipment and new crew, the Gorkon departed for the nebula NGC 201502, and another routine survey mission. It swiftly became clear that there was unusual activity within the class three nebula: garbled transmissions and powerful gravimetric shears were both present, and sensors soon detected a quantum fissure at its heart. Shortly after dispatching a selection of probes to gather more information, the Gorkon was snared by one of the shears and pulled into the nebula, vanishing from Starfleet’s long range sensors. “Our thoughts go with the loved ones and friends of the Gorkon’s crew at this time, and we wish to assure them, and everyone, that Starfleet is making every effort to locate the ship and bring our people home safely,” said Senator Luhna Darel. 7. SECTOR ZETA-THREE-GAMMA — Starfleet officer Fleet Captain Aron Kells has been rescued by his crew, who discovered that he had been captured by a rogue commodore conducting illegal experiment. “I can assure you all that Commodore Chase’s experiments were in no way sanctioned by Starfleet Command or Starfleet Medical,” said Doctor Rajani of Starfleet Medical in San Francisco. “His actions have clearly violated both his oath to the Federation and to his profession as a physician-scientist.” The crew of the USS Invicta discovered that Commodore Alistair Chase, MD, PhD, had been using his position as director of the Van Gelder Medical Research Station to continue his work in illegal genetic manipulation and engineering of new species. His work had begun during the Dominion War, working along side the Romulan scientist Maiek Khev, who later was branded as the Infernal and a war criminal. In fact, it was Commodore Chase who had ventured down a darker path with his research, and when he discovered that to unlock the secrets of Khev’s work, he would need Khev’s grandson Aron Kells, the commodore hatched an elaborate plan to fake the fleet captain’s death to capture him. Fortunately, Khev reached the Invicta in time to warn them about Chase, and along with the new information they had gathered from their investigation on Darvo V and on Syrene Station, the crew tracked Chase back to his remote lair at the Van Gelder Medical Research Station. Once there, they discovered that the energy patterns used to hide scans of the station matched those seen previously on 83 Leonis II during a supervolcanic eruption that had caused a mass extinction on that world. That eruption was found to have been artificially ignited and amplified, and now that the connection between it and Chase were made, acting CO Lt. Commander Roshanara Rahman moved forward to have Chase arrested. When Chase attempted to escape, a brief firefight ensued on the station between an away team and the station’s own security, but the crew were able to quickly secure the station and bring Chase to justice. Meanwhile, Kells was found to be still alive although badly injured from his ordeal. As shoreleave began, preparations were underway for a celebration of the Trill Festival of Life, a poetic response by the crew to the discovery that their captain was still alive. 9. POUIYEOG REGION — Work continues apace to construct a groundbreaking outpost in the Delta Quadrant. The arrival of the USS Endeavour from the Alpha Quadrant heralded the end of the temporary exile on the pre-warp societal world of Turisan II for the crew of the USS Darwin NCC-99312-A. With the repair of the damaged environmental controls, computer cores, and quantum slipstream drive, the Darwin was free to continue its exploration efforts on the fringes of the Delta Quadrant. En route back to the Dyson Sphere that heralded their return to the Pouiyeog region, Capt Renos took the opportunity to dole out some much deserved awards. Lt Lyldra was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and LtJG Graeme Cook was promoted to full Lieutenant. Due to the unique opportunities presented by their immersion in Turisan culture, various crew were awarded with the Explorer’s, Purple Heart, and Captain’s Commendation ribbons. Once arriving back at the Dyson Sphere, the nature of the Darwin’s mission is revealed: Starfleet has tasked them with establishing a Federation presence in the Pouiyeog region. This is to be accomplished by entering a joint endeavor with the Talaxians in the region to develop a trading outpost on the exterior of the Sphere. Joint efforts between the Starfleet Corps of Engineers and Talaxian design and engineering experts will see Outpost Unity built within a 6 month period, with the Darwin crew providing consultation and negotiation contributions towards its completion. As succinctly put by Lyldra, speaking on behalf of the Federation Diplomatic Corps, “That is an historic day and event for our two peoples. Unity base and its joint administration by the Federation and Talaxians of Talax II could be the first steps in a long relationship of cooperation.” In the months during the outpost’s construction, and as the USS Endeavour ferries necessary supplies and new officers from Federation space, several missions are undertaken. Negotiation talks between the Federation, helmed by Renos, Lyldra, and Counselor Didrik Stennes, are conducted to iron out concerns by the Talaxians about their design, construction, and administrative contributions. Negotiator Brixon of Talax II is of a minority who sees the Federation presence as unwarranted and unwanted, and tries to sabotage the fledgling relationship. Explorations of the destroyed site of a previous Talaxian base on the Sphere are conducted, and a mapping mission of the area around Outpost Unity’s construction site discovers a dangerous unknown exterior feature. With construction of the base nearing completion, the Darwin crew are once again tasked in consulting roles, with teams of officers resolving power generation issues, outpost offensive and defensive installations, and contributions to interior layouts and amenities. The negotiations with the Talaxians are completed, though not without discord and compromise, and final preparations continue apace towards the inauguration of Outpost Unity. 10. If you’ve been in Starbase 118 for any length of time, you’ve probably at the very least have seen the name Toni Turner. More than likely, you’ve interacted with her at some point, and for many of those in SB118, they’ve had the pleasure of seeing her in a role of leadership. Today, we get to know a little more about her in one of those roles. DeVeau: Welcome and thank you for taking some time to allow us to get to know you and your character a little better. Turner: That’s no problem at all. I’m glad to help in any way I can. You’ve been a part of SB118 for quite some time now, haven’t you? Yes, ten years last September. I suppose that’s a long time, yet it doesn’t seem so. As they say, (whoever *they* are), time flies when you’re having fun. ::smiles:: During your time here, where have you served in an out of character capacity? This is difficult to explain. Most of these were served at the same time: Member Academy Training Team, Senior Deputy Commandant, Cadet Steward. Member of Publicity Team, Podcast Team, Fleet Chat Team, Species Development Committee,Facilitator of the Monthly Fleet-wide Chat, and one of the judges of the bimonthly Writing Challenge. What can I say? I’m a workaholic.::grins:: In one of those positions, you’ve been on the training team for how long? Nine years. That’s a really long time. How did you get started on the training team? I was nominated to become a trainer, after I reached the rank of Lieutenant. I think Captain T’Pen may have welcomed the relief it gave her on the ship as I’ve always been a prolific simmer. What made you decide to take the position of Deputy Commandant of the training team? After I met my requirements, I applied to become the first Cadet Steward, and did that until an opening as a Deputy Commandant became available. Do you have any idea how many people you’ve seen go through the academy during your tenure? I’d have to guesstimate that total – probably somewhere between five to seven hundred cadets. I know that we hope when someone comes through training, we can not only help them acclimate to a different way of formatting sims, but also to help them be a valuable part of our community. Were there times that you found yourself facing a candidate who was difficult or just wasn’t a good fit for the group? If so, how did you handle that? Most of the time we try to set a good example, and be patient in our guidance through the week long classes. However, sometimes we do run into a dyed in the wool antagonist who will try our patience. Those are the ones who usually don’t make it as they have no desire to be any other way. There comes a point that they become disruptive to the entire class and have to be put on monitored sims, or ejected from the class. Thank heavens these are few and far between. The thrust of the classes is to bring as many new Ensigns into the group, and when one puts that goal into jeopardy, well, we have to look out for the “needs of the many.” Who was/were your most memorable trainee/s? ::laughs:: Well, two come to mind instantly. One of them blew up the USS Centris with Toni in it. I was sure glad the safety controls were implemented on the holodeck at the time. The other, well, let’s just say he was so impressive that we became friends, and later when he transferred to the ship I was on, we enjoyed years of on again off again simming together. What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a part of the training team? Be prepared to sim at your best, putting someone else’s needs before yours. Also they should understand that the skills they will be learning is a prelude to skills they will need to have before they can be considered for a Commander’s rank and as a Captain. Where do see yourself going from here in an out of character capacity? Since I retired from the Academy in December, I have implemented the Clean Up Crew (CUC). Our goals are varied, in that we do all those little jobs that are left hanging. At present we are assembling a list of alumni. And will be sending out emails to see if they would want to come back and sim with us. And while we are doing that, the Captain and up members are bolstering the Captaincy Exam with more questions to choose from. The duties of the CUC will always be different in that the limits are endless, but I have confidence in my crew – Captain Renos, Captain Nugra, Commander Alex Blair, and Major Ben Edwards. Other than that and my duties to the Embassy/Thunder and the CC/EC, I’m sure I’ll come up with something else to do. I really love our simming community and want the time I spend here to enhance its processes and keep it the best simming group online. Thank you for your long tenure of service in the Academy, and thank you for taking the time to let us get to know more about you and your role in SB118. If you have an interest in finding out more about the Academy and how to serve in it, check out SB118’s Training Team Wiki page. 13. DEEP SPACE 285 — The crew of the USS Doyle-A discovered there was more to the murder of Vladimir VonHusan than originally anticipated. The autopsy of the body was conducted by Lieutenant Alexander Bishop, and it was discovered the man had not only been stabbed but had also been poisoned with altoquinine. “Whoever this man was, he was definitely not liked,” said Britta O’Leah, a DS285 nurse. “There was even signs that he might have been shot, but Doctor Bishop was unable to find any.” Though the majority of the senior staff was focused on trying to solve the mystery of the murder victim, the main lab of the USS Doyle-A began to experience technical difficulties with a replicator that began making ooze that released a deadly odor. Initially believed to be a mishmash of chemicals from a malfunctioning computer, it was Lt. Cmdr. Tsuki Kazeyama who realized that it was really a Klingon biotoxin called khrovcet. “An unforeseen accident was contained for everybody’s safety. At the moment, Starfleet Security is investigating the matter and I cannot comment any further,” said Lt. Cmdr. Kazeyama in a statement to DS285’s FNS branch. The report stated that the automatic containment procedure was implemented, and Ensign Saavei had also planned a method to combat the biotoxin in case containment failed. Though the crew were able to look into both incidents in detail, they were unable to complete their investigation because of a new assignment from the commander of the starbase and the request of Starfleet Security to take over both incidents. With the USS Doyle-A down for a much needed systems upgrade, Captain Selene Faranfey’s senior staff was assigned to the USS Sheffield to conduct a feasibility study on a possible dilithium-rich world in the Avalon sector. 15. As we move into February, we look back on January, and how great it was! We went from an average post count of 188 per ship in December to 216 in January. While this is a nine sim decrease from the average last year, this marks a 28 sim increase — higher than last year by 10. The plots that drove this increase had to be fun! Now the per ship sim counts show a similar story, the plot for Starbase 118 Ops was deep in the action of their mission, pulling 335 sims for January (blowing right off the top of the chart below!), with the Constitution following close behind at 259. Invicta and Doyle were wrapping up their missions, with 154 and 146 respectively. Let’s see what February brings these ships! 16. STARBASE 118 — Despite a troubled opening night that saw the inauguration dinner abandoned amid concerns of “weaponized tribbles,” the 2393 Tribble Fanciers Association Convention was a critical and commercial success. Although the station’s press secretary AJ Craig refused to comment on reports that tribbles had been genetically modified to administer poison and sleep-inducing effects, unnamed sources within Starfleet Security have confirmed that they are looking to speak with Boris Malinov, a well-known breeder of the creatures who disappeared shortly after Anseidora Dorfmann, the keynote speaker, was incapacitated as she delivered her address. It is presently believed that he is not aboard Starbase 118 and may have clandestinely traveled to one of the many neutral worlds along the Federation/Klingon border. Despite this early setback, the convention has been considered a resounding success with approximately 26,000 visitors to the Promenade Convention Centre in the station’s “New York District”—in addition to those who already live and work aboard the Beta Quadrant’s largest outpost. “Everybody aboard this magnificent starbase has been wonderfully accommodating,” said Kal Danaril, a tribble breeder who took part in the convention. “I’m even considering a permanent move to the Commercial Sector.” The Tribble Fanciers Association announced last night that the 2394 convention will be held on Penthara IV, which marks the largest commercial event to be held on the nascent Federation colony world. This first graph shows the number of applications we received each month this year. As you can see, the fleet received twelve new applications in the month of January which averages about one every two days. The following chart shows how members found us, according to their application: This final graph shows how many people graduated from the Academy during the month of January. It is worth noting that we had five cadets apply and start training during the last week of the month, but their class did not finish before the end of the month. 20. So your bio is filled out and submitted. You have a great picture to go with it and even picked out the perfect name. Now you need to move that character to the (electronic) page. Or maybe you’ve been playing the same character for years but need to get the spark back into them. For every simmer in the game, your character is your window to the story, and this article will present some advice on how to make a competent character into a great character that your fellow players will remember for years. Once you have the bio and concept for your character done, your character exists only in your mind. The challenge is getting that character written in a way that engages your fellow players. The first step is to let everyone see your character’s point of view, and our simming style provides a great foundation for this. Focus on really re-writing the action you see posted by the other characters in your character’s point of view. Put their spin on it, and let your fellow players know what your character is thinking and how they are reacting to what is going on. The next important step is to make sure your characters are active, not passive. Your character should always have a goal they are seeking – even if they are not sure what the really want, or seeking something that is harmful to them. Whether that is short term (“I want to get off this planet”) or long term (“I will be captain someday”) every post you submit is a step in your character’s journey. When a character strives for something in the narrative, it becomes easier to decide how that character reacts – and from those reactions you will get great scenes! The third thing to keep in mind is characters need to be emotionally engaging. Even the most stoic Vulcan should engage the audience’s emotions with their struggle to stay logical despite the chaos around them. In order to be engaging the character needs to have strengths as well as vulnerabilities. For every shining success there must be a flaw or failing in the character. This makes them compelling and easier for the audience of your fellow players to empathize with. And the more your fellow players empathize with your character the more you will connect with them. This not only makes your ships bonds better, but provides more fun for everyone playing! It’s a win-win scenario. Do you want more information on writing great characters? Check out this article from the BBC Writer’s Lab on script writing essentials: character Want to discuss character development? Check out this forum topic in our writing improvement forum. You can share your own character goals and insights with fellow players – it’s a great way to show off your favorite characters as well as meet other characters from across the fleet! 24. Television over the years, have offered us a myriad of Easter eggs hidden in it’s scenes. Easter eggs are little segments that can be found in a television show episode or episodes, that may refer to another television show or movie that is not associated with that particular television show. It may be hidden in a scene and not discerned by anyone unless you have a fast eye. Movies can do the same. A famous example was when the next Pixar movie would always be hidden in the previous one before Disney bought Pixar. Star Trek is not immune. I have seen at least two references to other television shows or movies hidden in the scenes of Star Trek. Here is one when David Ogden Stiers guest starred on Star Trek: The Next Generation and of course, who can forget R2D2 floating in the rubble of the newest installment of Star Trek when Enterprise arrives as the ill-fated Vulcan? So that brings us to this week’s Poll of the Week question: Have you ever noticed as Easter egg in any Star Trek episode or movie? If so, what was it? So head over to the polls to vote and please let us know what you discovered. The post Poll of the Week: Hidden Messages appeared first on UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. 25. Ever wondered who owns a character? Or where a new character came from — only to find out after a lot of searching that it’s someone’s secondary character? Well, we’re trying to fix some of that confusion while helping to build our definitive member director for everyone’s reference. And we need your help to make sure it’s complete! First, check out the new Member Directory on the wiki. The first page/tab of the directory is the the Fleet Roster you all know and love. The second page is a new comprehensive listing so far of all the members organized by your Writer ID number. The table is a sortable table, meaning that you can click on any of the column headings to sort it by that column, so for instance, clicking on the primary character column will sort it alphabetically by first name. You’ll also note a link next to the ID number; that link should go to your user page. We’d like to encourage more use of wiki user pages, which we feel have been underused because they weren’t easy to find before (unlike our characters’ pages, which we all could find from the Fleet Roster). This is where we need you! If you see a red link next to your character’s name, we would appreciate it if you click it and then in the edit box, put the following: #REDIRECT[[User:YOUR WIKI USER NAME HERE]] You can see your wiki user name in the upper right-hand corner of the wiki page. For example: #REDIRECT[[User:FltAdml. Wolf]] This is because the links are actually linked to your ID number. Typing in your writer ID will then send you to your user page. “What if I don’t have a user page yet — my user name is red?” Then we encourage you to make one! We have a basic template you can use: http://wiki.starbase118.net/wiki/index.php/Template:New_user_page But just like your character pages, feel free to personalize your user page to fit you. Here are some great examples of user pages across the fleet so far in different styles: User:FltAdml. Wolf User:Renos User:Ceciri User:Rune Jolara User:Onewhoisseveral You can copy the code from any page like those above and paste it into your own, and then begin filling in your own information! Want help? Pop into the WIKI HELPDESK, or the chat room and ask your question. The post Help us grow our member directory appeared first on UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG.
