  3. I'm a huge fan of the Vitriolic Best Buds trope, so Odo and Quark get my pick here. With that in mind, I feel like a special mention needs to be given to ENT's Malcolm Reed and Hayes. I know a few people who felt it was just a silly conflict overall (Starfleet vs MACO), but I've been in RL situations where I've seen (experienced) misunderstandings that devolve into this kind of paranoid desire for control over what people believe belongs to them. The stupidity of the conflict on Enterprise hghlights a human element -- because sometimes we do dumb stuff, and we don't realise it until later. Sucks it ended the way it did, though.

  4. This was a big movement in Alieth's character arc, and she did an outstanding job tying together something she has been dropping hints at for MONTHS. She also seamlessly integrated actions during the most recent mission that indirectly resulted in the outcome of the sim. I'm always impressed by Alieth's writing, but this slow burning character arc has been a treat to try and figure out what is going on. Bravo Zulu! ********************************************************** (( Room 06-0501, Deck 6, USS Thor, being towed to Bajoran space)) The day had been long. Longer than she could have ever anticipated when it had begun, with her long-delayed call to her hometown. Yet, all duty was finally over, and she had no more excuses to face the inevitable. And, despite all her training to master her emotions, Alieth was overcome with anxiety. Fear of what she might discover. But even more of the absence she suspected. Either way, she NEEDED to know. So she plunged into her cluttered quarters and, after a few minutes, managed to find the gadgets she needed. She dressed in a traditional meditation robe, knelt on the mat she had brought from Vulcan, and lit the meditation lamp in front of her. Miraculously, the old lamp had survived the rough journey and the only damage it had suffered was a small crack that made the flame flicker, as if it were a frightened bird. Somehow, it seemed an appropriate tribute. Alieth focused on the quivering dance of the fire during several minutes, until only the flame and her breath were left. Then, she closed her eyes. Her breathing flowed like the sands of the deserts of Xial, quietly but relentlessly, eternal. In her mind, Alieth circled the flame and unlocked the door hidden in her brain, that sheltered place where she had preserved her most cherished treasure. “Sern” she uttered carefully, summoning the katra she had carried with her for so long, the only thing that had remained from one of the most important people in her life. Only silence replied. “Sern!” She called again, letting the anxiety and helplessness percolate through the voice of her mind. The same helplessness that she had felt so many years ago, when she had been unable to save his life, as he had saved hers. The same anxiety that she had felt when she had been unsuccessful at stopping the river of green blood flowing from his body to water the thirsty sands of Xial. “SERN!” She asked one last time. This time, she knew her lips had spoken the word aloud. The name she had refused to utter for so long echoed through the empty room, reverberating through the shattered remains of her belongings. But the outcome was the same. Silence. Alieth opened her eyes. The flame of the lamp had long since faded, leaving the room in a twilight only lit by the cold glow of distant stars. Alieth hugged her chest and leaned forward, until her forehead touched the complex motifs woven into the meditation mat. And, then, she let out a tearless sob. Because she had lost him again. This time, forever. [TBC] ================================= Lt. JG Alieth Medical Officer USS Thor NCC-82607 Fleet Captain A. 13. ASTEROID TRUENO, BRATAX SYSTEM — Scientific innovation company BetaGen Incorporated has invited a Starfleet team to provide a safety assessment of their newly opened experience asteroid “Dinosauria”. In a surprising new venture from BetaGen Inc., a new experience park has opened on a terraformed asteroid in the Bratax System orbiting the uninhabited world of Bratax IV. According to information provided in their press kit, the experience is a joint scientific and entertainment endeavour to discover and regenerate prehistoric life from around the Milky Way Galaxy. Where the science meets the entertainment industry, however, is in the experiences tailored for visitors to tour around, such as cultivated life from BetaGen laboratories on display, and an intriguing look into the natural habitat of many animals given life at the park. Assigned to assessing the experience for the safety of Federation visitors is the senior crew from the USS Gorkon (NCC-82293), which recently reported to the asteroid surface. With much ground to cover, the crew have separated into four teams covering a section of the park each to certify Federation standards in safety, animal welfare, treatment of the staff, ethics and standards in their scientific pursuits, and technical ability to host the plethora of visitors once the experience opens to the public. Each of the assigned areas specialises in a habitat and each zone connected to one another by the transport hub system which a monorail design made to allow maximum efficiency in transportation for visitors to the park, for staff to reach areas quickly, and for incredible views of the areas off-limits to pedestrian traffic. Paddocks for herbivore, omnivore and carnivore animals are available for viewing with varying levels of admittance. They permit visitors to take land-based vehicles from the Park Ranger stations accessible via the transport system. These vehicles have varying degrees of permission – for example, they can roam through the herbivore paddock with freedom, while when traversing through omnivore and carnivore, it restricts the vehicle to automation only for safety protocols. The reformation of the asteroid also permitted for deep cavernous underwater aquatic zones available for access through the marine facilities. These include separate depths for unique creatures, however, there are viewing areas beneath the surface for visitors to watch the animals interact with one another while underwater. On the other side of the park, they keep smaller dinosaurs in the Enclosure Zone, including an area created as a Petting Zoo for herbivore animals and inquisitive children. BetaGen also extended their invitation for the crew to explore their laboratory setup on the asteroid, including watching regenerating the DNA structure through the incubation and hatching of newly recovered life forms. “While it has always been a wish of mine to open somewhere like this,” explained Coorg, CEO of Dinosauria and BetaGen Inc., “limitations have always existed. We now find ourselves in a privileged position to not only investigate the DNA of prehistoric life forms with the galaxy but also bring the science and wonder of such life to Federation citizens. We will be happy to permit visitors to the experience once Starfleet has given us the green light.” Besides providing an assessment of the surface structure, upon arriving at the park, reports of a missing freighter transporting animals bound for the asteroid have pulled the Gorkon, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Caedan Nkai, out of orbit and into the surrounding system for further investigation. Rumours suggest there are early sightings of a gormagander. Written by Jocelyn Marshall The post BetaGen Inc. 14. BORDERLANDS REGION — As reports of strange signals in the Celendi nebula, potential pirates using the lone shipping lane through the mostly unexplored sector, and Klingon border issues, the Nova-class starship USS Resolution (NCC-78145) launches to investigate and heads out for the Borderlands. Known for potential hazards, including the Briar Patch and Celendi Nebula, the Borderlands — a large swath of neutral space along the Klingon border — is an unexplored region of space home to various species including the Son’a, Sulibans, and Klingons. Commanding Starfleet’s latest launch is Fleet Captain Kalianna Nicholotti. An experienced commander and highly decorated officer, Nicholotti is a past recipient of the Christopher Pike Pendant, the Purple Heart, and the Federation Cross — three of Starfleet’s highest honors. Assisting as Executive Officer is Lieutenant Commander Addison MacKenzie, previously of the Chief Medical Officer on the USS Thor and USS Veritas. Nicholotti’s appointment is a special reunion — the Resolution was her first posting as a Starfleet Marine in 2386. “The Resolution and I have a long and distinguished history,” Nicholotti revealed in a statement to the FNS. “She’s a good ship that will take good care of this great crew. The Borderlands are full of unknowns. I can’t wait to see what we discover out there,” Since the recommission of the Resolution, the newly appointed crew have spent their time getting to know each other and their ship. The new crew, comprising both new Academy graduates and veteran Starfleet officers, look forward to the opportunity to explore a relatively unknown corner of space. Lieutenant Commander Genkos Adea, the Resolution’s Chief Medical Officer, transferred from the USS Gorkon, where he held a similar post. “At first I was a little apprehensive,” Adea explained when approached. “The Resolution’s sickbay would fit into my quarters on the Gorkon, but now I’ve come to love the cosy confines of the ship. Furthermore, the Borderlands is a fascinating area of space; so close to what we know and yet completely unknown. This can only go well.” Written by Addison MacKenzie The post Recommissioned Resolution Sets Course for the Borderlands appeared first on StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. View the full article

  17. INSIDE SLIPSTREAM — The USS Thor (NCC 82607), temporarily under the command of First Officer Lt. Cmdr. Geoffrey Teller, collided with an object of unknown origin, suffering critical damage. The object, described by crew as a “mine”, has embedded itself within the ship and cannot be safely removed, preventing the ship from returning to normal space. At press time, over one hundred crewmen are listed as missing and presumed lost. “I’ve been around the Corps for a hot minute now.” Taking a brief respite from their search & rescue operations, 1st. Lt. Wes Greaves, of the Starfleet Marine Corps, commented. “I’ve seen some good, and I’ve seen some bad, but this… This is different. The scale of catastrophe, and the suddenness of it, is on a whole new level. We still haven’t had time to even recover the dead.” With less than twelve hours until their QSD drive core overloads, the pace of work to save the ship has been frantic, but the work to save the crew has been even more desperate. Lt. Cmdr. Addison MacKenzie, the ship’s Chief Medical Officer, was elected to lead a dangerous partial evacuation of the Thor via the ship’s shuttles and runabouts. Violently tossed out of the slipstream near the Bajor system, a combined response of Starfleet and the Bajoran Defense Force recovered several hundred injured crew. “I’m just sort of numb. I saw it happen, ya know?” Reached for comment aboard the USS Indefatigable, the ordeal visibly shook Crewman James Walsh. “The impact ripped through the deck right in front of me. It was horrible. I almost was sucked out through a hull breach… And Liz. She was right there in front of me when it happened. I can still picture her smile….” At press time, the Thor is investigating the “mine” itself and trying to determine if the remaining skeleton crew can save the vessel before time runs out. More on this story as it develops. Written by Geoffrey Teller The post USS Thor Gravely Damaged, Partially Evacuated Due To Mysterious Collision appeared first on StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG.
